12. A steam engine cylinder of 250 mm effective diameter is


subjected to a steam pressure of 1·2 N/mm2 . The cylinder
cover is connected by means of 6 bolts. The bolts are tightened
with initial load of 1·5 times that of steam load. A copper gasket
of stiffness factor 0·5 is used to make the joint leak proof. Find
the size of the bolts so that the stress induced in the bolts is
not to exceed 100 N/mm2 . 10

13. Find the efficiency of single-riverted lap joint of 6 mm plates


wiht 20 mm diameter rivets having a pitch of 50 mm. Assume

inclined plane when two mutual perpendicular normal stresses

12. An eye bolt has to lift a load of 100 kN. Ultimate strength of
steel is 600 N/mm2 and the factor of safety is 5. Design the eye
bolt and draw a proportionate sketch. 10

13. Design a double riveted lap joint for joining two plates of
10 mm thick. The allowable stresses are 60 N/mm2 in tension,
50 N/mm2 in shearing and 80 N/mm2 in crushing . Determine
the efficiency of the joint. 10

14. A plate of 60 mm wide and 15 mm thick is welded on to another


* plate by a single transverse weld and a double parallel fillet
weld. Find the length of the parallel weld if the plate is loaded
by a static tensile load. Take allowable tensile stress of the
plates as 90 N/mm2 and weld shear stress as 65 N/mm2 . 10

15. A mild steel shaft transmits 50 kW at 300 r.p.m. Maximum


torque transmitted exceeds mean torque by 30%. Maximum
shear stress is 80 N/mm2 and angle of twist should not exceed
1º in a length of 20 diameter. Modulus of rigidity is 80 GN/m2 .
Compute the diameter of the shaft. 10

16. Design and*draw a muff coupling which is used to connect two
steel shafts transmitting 100 kW at 600 r.p.m. Design shaft
and muff from strength point of view and other dimensions by
empirical formulae. Shear stresses for muff and shaft are
30 N/mm2 and 50 N/mm2 . Assume maximum torque to be
25% more than mean torque. 10

17. Write the advantages and disadvantages of sliding contact


bearings over other types of bearings. 5+5

18. (a) Using a punch, a hole of 15 mm diameter is to be punched


in an MS plate of 8 mm thick. Find the shear stress
developed if the ultimate crushing strength is 500 N/mm2 . 5

the diameter of the shaft.

13. Design and draw a muff coupling to connect two shafts


transmitting 100 kW power at 200 r.p.m. The permissible shearing
and crushing stresses for shaft and key material are 50 N/mm2
and 100 N/mm2 respectively. The material for muff is cast iron
with a permissible shear stress of 15 N/mm2 . Assume that the
maximum torque transmitted is equal to the mean torque.

14. A flat belt drive is used to transmit 15 kW power from an electric


* motor to a flour mill. The following data is available :
Thickness of belt : 10 mm
Density of belt material : 1·1 gm/cm2
Motor pulley diameter : 1400 mm
Motor pulley speed : 135 r.p.m.

16. A foot step bearing supports a shaft of 120 mm diameter which is


counterbored at the end with a hole diameter of 30 mm. The shaft
rotates at 140 r.p.m. and subjected to a bearing pressure of
0·8 MPa. Find (a) the load to be supported, (b) the power lost in
friction and (c) the heat generated. Take, coefficient of friction as
0·015.

17. A cam is to give the following motion to a knife-edged follower :


(a) Out stroke during 90° of cam rotation
(b) Dwell for the next 30° of cam rotation
(c) Return stroke during next 120° of cam rotation
(d) Dwell for the remaining 120° of cam rotation
The stroke of the follower is 40 mm and the minimum radius of the
cam is 30 mm. The follower moves with uniform velocity during
both the outstroke and return strokes. Draw the profile of the cam
when the axis of the follower passes through the axis of the cam
shaft.

* 18. (a) A rolling mill requires an average of 300 kW during 10 seconds


that the billet is passing through the mill. An electric motor
whose constant output is 250 kW drives the mill, and during
the operation the flywheel falls from 80 rev/min to 70 rev/min.
Find moment of inertia of the flywheel.

shaft given the factor of safety as 6 and assuming ultimate
bending stress as 690 N/mm 2 and ultimate shear stress as
516 N/mm 2 .

bearing supporting 10 kN load on a 125 mm diameter shaft
rotating at 1300 r.p.m. The length of bearing is 1·5 times the
shaft diameter. The diametral clearance is 0·15 mm and the
absolute viscosity of lubricating oil is 0·01 kg/m-s and
k = 0 × 002.

17. Draw the displacement diagram and cam profile to give the
following motion to a knife edge follower :
Outward stroke through 40 mm during 120º of cam
rotation; Dwell for 60º of cam rotation; return stroke during
the next 90º.

* radius of cam is 35 mm. The line of stroke of the follower is
coinciding with the centre of the cam axis and the follower
