PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Background of the study
Bullying is an abusive behavior that involves inequity in power between the bully
and the victim. Bullying has negative effects namely, depression and suicide. Bullying
happens when an individual or group of people with more power repeatedly and
intentionally cause hurt and harm to another person or group of individuals who can’t
defend themselves. While the bullying definition is wide and broad and can occur in
different occasions is usually a relationship problem that requires relationship-based
remedies. This issue are best solved in the social environment. This is most often
happen in some schools.
It is said that students who are bullied may feel embarrassed and shamed. The
stress and anxiety caused by bullying and harassment may cause difficulties in the
students concentration decreasing their ability to focus that can cause to learning
problems during class which affects their ability to remember things they have learned
that may result to a poor academic performance. According to FBI, “Bullying remains
one of the largest problems in schools, with the percentage of students reportedly
bullied at least once per week steadily increasing since 1999.’’ Most school bullying
takes place in areas that are less supervised by adults, schools need to create an action
plan to address these spots by additional adults or using security techniques including
closed circuit cameras. They can also establish anonymous reporting tools like
suggestion boxes or cyberbullying hotlines where students can send real time text
messages or leave a voice mail on the school website.
Based on Republic Act 10627, or the Anti-Bullying Act (the “Act”), aims to protect
children enrolled in Kindergarten, elementary, and secondary schools and learning
centers (collectively, “Schools”) from being bullied. It requires schools to adopt policies
to address the existence of bullying in their respective institutions. This republic act if
applied to all school, will result to an improvement reducing the effects of underserved
and unwanted bullying among students that can lead to their better academic
performance.
This study aims determine the Effects of Bullying on the Academic Performance
of Grade 11 MARIGOLD students at Cabaruan national high school, and to provide
solutions in order for these problems to be addressed in this study’s purpose.
Therefore, this research study discusses the effects of bullying on the academic
performance of students, helps define bullying, discusses the effects of teenage bullying
and its prevalence and underlying mental effects, and offer tips and techniques on
preventing or reducing bullying among students.
This study is focused on the effects of Bullying on the Academic Performance of
Grade 11 MARIGOLD students at Cabaruan national high school. The subjects of the
study were the Grade 11 MARIGOLD students at Cabaruan NHS of the Academic year
2017-2018.
Statement of the problem
This study aimed to determine the effects of bullying to the academic
performance of Grade 11 MARIGOLD students at Cabaruan NHS , A.Y. 2017-2018.
Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:
1. What are the profile of the respondents in terms of:
a. gender
b. age
2. What are the effects of bullying on the academic performance of the Grade 11
MARIGOLD students at Cabaruan NHS ?
3. Is there a significant relationship between the profile and the effects of bullying
to the Grade 11 MARIGOLD students?
4. What suggested measures are to be done in order to eliminate the cases of
bullying in the school?
Null Hypothesis
There is no significant relationship between the profile variables and the effects
of bullying on academic performance of the respondents.
Significance of the study
The finding which this study will reveal, may benefit certain groups and will help
them to make measures and address different solutions to bullying which is happening in
school that could affect the student's academic performance. The benefits they may be
able to gain are the following:
The CABARUAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL. The school will be
encouraged to promote a more strict "no bullying rule" providing a more peaceful and
comfortable learning environment to its students at the same time building its reputation
as a "No bullying school" attracting more incoming grade 11 students.
Parent. This study will inform parents about the effects of bullying on their
children's academic performance preventing its further effects that could result to
repeating a school year if their children fail on their studies, at the same time, cost of
educating the child will be lessen resulting to more savings.
Students. The students will have a quality learning experience and will have
more focus in studying harder upgrading their intelligence enabling them to perform well
in their class.
Scope and Delimitation
The study was conducted at Cabaruan National High School and limited only to
the currently enrolled Grade 11 MARIGOLD students. The range of the study was from
November 2017 to March 2018. The study will be limited only to assess the effects of
Bullying on the Academic performance of Grade 11 MARIGOLD students.
Definition of Terms
The following terms are defined conceptually for better understanding of the
readers.
Academic performance. Academic performance is the outcome of education—
the extent to which a student, teacher or institution has achieved their educational goals
(Annie, Howard & Mildred, 1996).
Academic Year (A.Y.). The annual period of sessions of an educational
institution usually beginning in September and ending in June (Merriam dictionary)
Anxiety. Apprehensive uneasiness or nervousness usually over an impending or
anticipated ill (Merriam dictionary)
Bully. A blustering, browbeating person; especially : one is habitually cruel,
insulting, or threatening to others who are weaker, smaller, or in some way vulnerable
(Merriam dictionary)
Bullying. Abuse and mistreatment of someone vulnerable by someone stronger,
more powerful, etc. (Merriam dictionary)
Cyber bullying. The electronic posting of mean-spirited messages about a person
(such as student) often done anonymously (Merriam dictionary)
Depression. An act of depressing or a state of being depressed (Merriam
dictionary)
Harassment. To create an unpleasant or hostile situation for especially by
uninvited and unwelcome verbal or physical conduct (Merriam dictionary)
Inequity. An instance of injustice or unfairness (Merriam dictionary)
Stress. A physical, chemical, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental
tension and maybe a factor of disease causation (Merriam dictionary)
Suicide. The act or an instance of taking one's on life voluntarily and intentionally
(Merriam dictionary)
