Clay Animal Project
Through the use of clay, what
could make an animal appear
more realistic?
What could make animals look more realistic?
● Texture
● Color
● Details
● Proportions
● Etc.
Step 1: Animal selection/sketches
● Pick an animal you want to recreate in 3 dimensional form
● Research the animal using phone/iPad
● Using your sketchbook, create 4 thumbnail sketches of the animal at different
angles to analyze the form of that specific animal
● Your sketch needs to show detail, and shading so that we get an idea of the
animals form and texture
● SKETCH DUE THURSDAY during class (MINOR)
Step 2: Approval of animal/begin sculpting
● Using clay, start creating the general form for your animal (Body, legs, head,
etc.)
Step 3: Hollowing your animal
● To reduce air bubbles and explosions, you
will need to hollow out your animal
● Your clay must be in the beginning stages
of leatherhard
● Use floss or clay wire to split your
animal’s body in half
● Use the loop tool to scoop out the extra
clay in the middle
● After hollowed, scratch and slip edges
back together
Step 3: Hollowing your animal
Step 4: Adding Texture/Details
● Use different clay tools to start adding textures/details
● Use your sketch/photos as a guide
Step 5: Drying process
● Once completely done, check with Ms. Doran for approval, leave project out to
dry to get into the bone-dry stage.
