KING SWIVEL
LUBRICATION INSTRUCTIONS
The lubrication of King Swivels is accomplished with a Central Bearing Oil Reservoir and
various Alemite grease fittings for all other components requiring lubrication.
Before using Swivels, the Central Bearing Reservoir should be checked and filled with
the recommended lubricant if necessary. New Swivels are shipped with or without
lubricant, depending upon customer requirements, destination and mode of transport,
and should be checked before use. The proper lubricants, intervals and capacities are
given in the chart below.

5SC Circulating Head
The 5SC circulating head is designed for continuous rotation and fluid circulation in
wireline coring, sampling and well logging. As a circulating head they are not designed
as a load carrying member. Do not attempt to lift or lower a load with the 5SC head.
These units are designed for maximum working pressures of 6,000 PSI and are
equipped with chevron (v-type) packing and a hardened, ground washpipe. Two zerk
fittings are provided; one on the 5SC-14 bearing housing for bearing lubrication and
one on the 5SC-4 body for packing lubrication. A good grade of extreme pressure
bearing grease such as Mobilith 220, free of graphite and mica, is suitable.

ALWAYS GREASE WHILE ROTATING:

BEARING LUBRICATION:

Bearing life is dependent upon the amount and quality of clean grease in the bearing
cavity. Excess grease is vented out the top seal. The bearings cannot be over-greased. If
grease flows from the lower end, the lower seal should be replaced. If the bearing cavity
is filled with grease, drilling mud cannot enter and ruin the bearings.

PACKING LUBRICATION:

The lips of the V-type packing are energized by grease and form a seal around the
washpipe. If the packing is leaking, 3-5 pumps from the grease gun will usually stop the
leakage. GREASE WHILE ROTATING. Depress the nipple of the zerk fitting to relieve
any excess grease pressure. If greasing does not stop leakage, the packing adjusting
gland must be tightened only enough to stop the leakage. Tighten clockwise. Over
tightening can cause the unit to lock-up and will damage the washpipe (groove) and
packing. When the above lubrication/adjustment does not stop leakage, the packing
must be replaced.

8
PACKING REPLACEMENT

A. Remove locking bolt(16) and unscrew 5SC-4 body from housing. Unscrew clockwise
(left hand thread).

B. Loosen set screw on packing nut(5) and unscrew clockwise the packing nut from the
body. Blind holes are drilled in the nut to aid in removal. Remove the packing(2), lan-
tern ring(4), and seat ring(3) from the body remembering the stack relationship.

C. If the washpipe is grooved it should be replaced:

1. Secure the SC-16 lower connection(15) and wrench the flats provided on the
washpipe.
2. Unscrew in a clockwise direction. (Left hand threads)
3. Replace the O-ring(7) in base of washpipe, dope the threads, and screw in new
washpipe (6) counterclockwise.

DO NOT use the tophead or rotary table to “bump” the washpipe tight.

D. Replace packing the body as follows:

1. Install 2.5-BL-6A (3) seat ring flat side up.
2. Insert 50-KG-20 (2) packing rings, V-form up, until the rings stack up 1/8” below
grease hole.
3. Insert 50-KG-21(4) lantern ring.
4. Insert remaining packing rings.
5. The packing adjusting nut is threaded, counterclockwise until it touches packing
rings.

NOTE: Coating the packing with oil or grease aids assembly.

E. Reassemble body on washpipe, screw down body, re-set the locking bolt.
