It also describes the concepts of exaltation and debilitation points where planets are strongest or weakest. Finally, it outlines the six sources of strength (shadbala) that determine a planet's influence in a birth chart: positional, directional, motional, temporal, aspect, and natural strength. Mutual Relationship & Behavior of Planets

Planets like human beings have friendship, enmity and neutral relationship with each other. This
is of two types. One is the permanent and the other is temporary. By friendship and enmity we
mean that THE RAYS OF ONE PLANET WILL BE INTENSIFIED OR COUNTER ACTED
BY THE OTHER.

Planet Friends Neutral Enemies

Sun Moon, Mars., Jupiter Mercury Venus & Saturn
Moon Sun, Mercury Mars, Jup, Venus, Sat None
Mars Sun, Moon, Jupiter Venus , Saturn Mercury
Mercury Sun, Venus Mars, Jupiter, Saturn Moon
Jupiter Sun, Moon, Mars Saturn Mercury, Venus
Venus Mercury, Saturn Mars, Jupiter Sun, Moon
Saturn Mercury, Venus Jupiter Sun, Moon , Mars

Planets become Friends or Neutral depending on their sign positions. Planets in 10,11,12, 2, 3, 4
positions from any other become its temporary friends. Those in the remaining sign become
temporary enemies. Both these types are taken into consideration while judging a Indian
horoscope. Thus the relation changes into what is called as final for that horoscope.

Permanent friend +Temporary friend = Best friend

Permanent friend +Temporary enemy = Neutral
Permanent enemy +Temporary enemy = Bitter enemy
Permanent enemy +Temporary friend = Neutral
Permanent Neural =Temporary friend = Friend
Permanent neutral +Temporary enemy = Enemy

Thus the 12 signs of the zodiac become for each planet either, Own house, Friends house, Neutral
house, Enemy house or Bitter enemy house. Besides the planets have points of Exaltation and
Debilitation where it gets full strength or none. These points fall exactly 180 degrees to each other

The 'Shadbala' or Six Sources of Strength
Each planet depending on its position gets certain strength in a horoscope. This is measured
numerically in units called Rupas. These are:
· Sthana bala or positional strength.
· Digbala or the directional strength.
· Chesta bala or motional Strength
· Kala bala or temporal strength. Moon, Mars and Saturn are powerful in the night, Sun, Jupiter
and Venus are powerful in day, and Mercury is powerful both in day and night.
· Drug Bala or Aspect strength
· Naisargika bala or Permanent natural strength. The order of strength is Sun, Moon, Venus,
Jupiter, Mercury, Mars and Saturn in descending order.

Shadbala rules
According to the Shadbala rules every planet needs a certain amount of Rupas to
be strong. According to these rules
Mercury needs 7 Rupas,
Jupiter needs 6 ½ Rupas,
The Moon needs 6 Rupas,
Venus needs 5 ½ Rupas,
Saturn, the Sun and Mars need 5 Rupas.
These values are seen as the minimum requirement for a certain planet to be
strong.

When two or planets influence the same house or when they participate in a yoga,
then the planet with the highest shadbala is the most likely give the results. The
planet with the strongest shadbala is like a group leader who acts on the group’s behalf.

On the other hand, ashtakavarga bala shows how other planets support or oppose a planet. It does
not show how capable the planet is of leading and giving the results of a group of planets, unlike
shadbala. It shows how capable a planet is of giving its own results, in harmony with other
planetary forces.
