TUTORIAL NOTES

Unit: HLTH 1202 Sport: Football Week: 2

Warm up
• KTP’s: 1. Opposite leg forward to punching arm. 2. Hard punch to the ball and follow through towards target

Warm up
Duration 10mins
Equipment 8 cones, 2 balls
Area Size Large grassed area
Instructions o The class is separated into 2 groups
o Teams in each group run around a marked area handballing
to each other whist weaving through people
Variation and • Playing tag
Progression • 5 handballs then tag the other team

L – appropriate for any age group

E – 8 cones, 2 footballs

S – large grassed area

T – 10 minutes

Activity 1

KTP’s: 1. The fingers are spread evenly along each side of the ball, with thumbs extending to the lacing, 2. Point toes
at target – see the ball hit the foot.

Star Kicking Drill


Duration 10mins
Equipment 5 balls per group
Area Size Large grassed area
Instructions o Groups of 6 kick in a star pattern shown by teacher

Variation and • Run onto ball and add more balls


Progression • Groups join together to make a large circle for longer kicks

L – visual demonstration for visual learners,


all ages drill (modify distance for younger
ages)

E – 5 balls, 6 cones

S – 10x10m grassed area

T – 10 minutes
Activity 2
KTP’s: 1. Move forward to meet the ball; never wait for it to come to you. 2. Take the ball in hands with fingers
spread and thumbs close together = W shape
Marking Drill
Duration 10mins
Equipment 8 cones, 4 balls per group
Area Size Large grassed area
Instructions o Teams kick to one another over a 5m distance
o Start off with chest mark
o 1 mark = 1 point
Variation and • High mark in front
Progression • Swap between high and chest marks
• Run on to ball

L – Demonstration for kinaesthetic and


visual learners, verbal explanation for
auditory learners. 16 students per group

E – 16 cones and 8 balls

S – small grass area, 5m between teams

T – 10 minutes overall. 1 minute explanation


and 3 minutes per variation.

Activity 3

Handball Drill – AFL tag
Duration 10mins
Equipment 4 cones, 1 ball per group
Area Size Large grassed area
Instructions o 2 taggers identified (wear bibs)
o The rest of the group hand balls the ball around
o The tagger must tag the person who has possession of the
ball
Variation and • Add in an extra tagger
Progression • Add in an extra ball

visual and auditory learners. For older
age groups

E – 4 cones, 1 ball, bibs

S – 10x10m grassed area

T – 10 minutes
Activity 4
KTP’s: 1. The body is in line behind the path of the ball in crouched position. 2. The arms and hands are extended
with the fingers almost touching the ground, palms towards ball.

Ball Control Drill


Duration 10mins
Equipment 2 balls per group
Area Size Large grassed area
Instructions o Teacher rolls ball along the floor
o Students must position themselves correctly to pick up the
ball and hand ball it back
Variation and • Students must pick ball up and hand ball it
Progression • Add in a defender and another ball

L – demonstration for visual learners

E – 1 ball per group

S – small grassed area (5x2m)

T – 10 minutes

Activity 5
KTP’s: 1. Pull the ball back quickly as you move around the opponent. 2. Ensure that you change direction and don't
run in a straight line.
Evasion Game
Duration 10mins
Equipment Bibs and markers
Area Size 10x10m grassed area
Instructions o Students with bibs on were taggers
o The rest of the class had to hand ball around the ball in a
square
o Taggers had to tag the person who had the ball
o The people who were tagged then became taggers
Variation and • Add In more taggers
Progression • Add in more balls
• Make the square smaller

auditory learners. Simple game for any year level

E – 1 ball per group, bibs, 4 cones
