COMPARATIVES SUPERLATIVES
One-syllable adjectives → -ER One-syllable adjectives → THE -EST
Examples: Examples:
 Tall → taller  Tall → the tallest
 Fast → faster  Fast → the fastest
- A giraffe is taller than a lion. - The giraffe is the tallest animal on earth.
-A cheetah is faster than a turtle. - The cheetah is the fastest animal in the world.
One-syllable adjectives ending in –E → -R One-syllable adjectives → THE –ST

 Cute→ cuter  Cute → the cutest
- A squirrel is cuter than a hippo. - The squirrel is the cutest animal in the world.
One-syllable adjectives ending in consonant + vowel + One-syllable adjectives ending in consonant + vowel +
consonant → double consonant + -ER consonant → THE double consonant + -EST

 Fat → fater  Fat → the fatest
 Big → bigger  Big → the biggest
- An elephant is fater than a tiger. -The elephant is the fatest animal at the zoo.

Two-syllable adjectives ending in – ER / -OW / -LE → Two-syllable adjectives ending in – ER / -OW / -LE →
-ER THE -EST

 Gentle → gentler Gentle → the gentlest
 Clever → cleverer Clever → the cleverest
- A monkey is cleverer than a snake. - The monkey is the cleverest animal at the safari park.
Two-syllable adjectives ending in –Y → -IER Two-syllable adjectives ending in –Y → THE –IEST

- A hippo is more dangerous than an elephant.  Intelligent → the most intelligent
- A dolphin is more intelligent than a turtle. - The hippo is one of the most dangerous animals in the
savannah.
- The dolphin is the most intelligent sea animal.
