NEWSPRESENTER 1: The Bureau of Quarantine is on alert and is closely monitoring all seaports

and airports in the country in response to reports of a mysterious disease believed to be from China,

the Department of Health (DOH) said.

In a statement on Sunday, the DOH said Health Secretary Francisco Duque III has instructed

the quarantine bureau to intensify the checking of all incoming travelers especially those manifesting

fever or signs of respiratory infection.

Citing reports, the DOH noted 44 individuals have been affected in China and the said disease

is similar to a “viral pneumonia of unknown origin.”

NEWSPRESENTER 2: Thai retailers kicked off 2020 with a ban on single-use plastic bags, joining

the battle against throwaway carriers in the Southeast Asian nation where citizens go through an

average of eight every day.

The move, taken on Wednesday by several major mall operators and the ubiquitous 7/11

convenience stores, will see customers instead paying a small fee for a reusable bag made of a cloth-

like fabric.

Thailand is one of the largest contributors to ocean pollution, with plastic bags recently turning

up in the stomachs of dead marine mammals like dugongs and green turtles so the government

launched a campaign to eliminate their use of plastic by 2022.

MOMMY: Stop crying my dear! Tell me where it hurts. Tell me!

CHILD: Mommy, this part really hurts.

DADDY: Mom, don’t be too harsh.

Just use betadine to prevent further irritation on skin.

Medicines should not hurt more, than wounds.

A friendly-reminder from Department of Health.

NEWSPRESENTER 3: Another extension of the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX)

was opened on Sunday, for motorists to use during the holiday season until it is closed again this

January for the construction of the final section of the expressway.

The four-kilometer Sison-Rosario section, which runs parallel to the existing highway, can

shave about 30 minutes of travel from Metro Manila to Baguio City.

A local road contractor, Christopher Orpilla, said the Sison-Rosario section will be toll-free

during the Christmas season, but he did not specify the inclusive dates.

However, Orpilla added that the section will be closed in January when work on the final

section of the TPLEX will commence.

4

The Pozorrubio-Sison section will be about 7 kilometers long and is expected to open in the

first quarter of this year.

This will complete the TPLEX which will cut travel to Baguio from Metro Manila to just 3 to 4

hours.

NEWSPRESENTER 4: Thirdy Ravena conspicuously skipped the last PBA Draft and that may have a

lot to do with his decision to pursue an overseas career.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Al Panlilio revealed Ravena has plans to play in

either Australia or Japan as the former UAAP star committed to Gilas Pilipinas leading up to the 2023

FIBA World Cup.

Ravena is one of the first 7 players who have committed to the national team pool for the next

edition of the World Cup and he could see action in the qualifiers of the FIBA Asia Cup starting in
