2. One Tailed and Two Tailed Tests of Hypothesis
a. An analyst wants to prove that a portfolio manager outperformed the S&P 500 index in a given year
by 16.91%. Set up the null (H0) and alternative (Ha) hypotheses. (15 points)
b. A principal at a certain school claims that the students in his school are above average intelligence.
A random sample of 30 students IQ scores have a mean scores of 112. Is there sufficient evidence
to support the principal’s claim? Give the null (H0) and alternative (Ha) hypotheses. (15 points)
3. One Sample T-Test
The company wants to improve sales. Past sales data indicate that the average sale was $100 per
transaction. After training the sales force, recent sales data (taken from a sample of 25 salesmen)
indicates an average sale of $130, with a standard deviation of $15. Did the training work? Test the
hypothesis at a 5% alpha level. (25 points)
