 LOW FREQUENCY CURRENS
Following are the low frequency currents:-
1. FARADIC CURRENT
2. DIADYNAMIC CURRENT
3. SUINUSOIDAL CURRENT
4. DIADYNAMIC CURRENT

FARADIC CURRENT
It is an alternating current consist of two unequal phases in each cycle, with the
first phase having EMF of 1ms followed by trained damped oscillations with the
frequency of 1000Hz.

Pulse duration: 0.1 and 1 msec

Frequency: 50-100Hz
Pulse shape: Saw tooth, Trapezoidal, Triangular
Pulse length: 0.02-1.0ms
Pulse type: Unsurged and plain Faradic, surged faradic , interupted
surged faradic.
Dosage :50 to 20 contractions per nerve trunk or per motor point to each
individual muscle per day.

 Indications: following are the indications of Faradic current:-

 Facilitation of muscle contraction when inhibited by pain
 Reeducation of muscle action
 Training a new muscle action
 Venous drainage
 Reduce formation and losing of adhesion

 Contraindications:
Following are the contra-indications of Faradic current:
 Gross edema
 Pain
 Scar tissues and contractures
 Skin lesion
 Lack of pain sensation
 Active TB or cancer
 Over cardiac peacemaker
 Thrombosis
 Unreliable patient
 Superficial metal
 Infections

GALVANIC CURRENT
It is a direct current. Its direction of polarity is constant and passing
continuously in one direction only so termed as constant direct
current.
Because of its unidirectional property, when applied to muscle trend to
contract and remain in position till it is brought to zero ,which seems to
be very painful.
To relieve this a relaxation period is advisable and so the current thus
applied in the form of short duration with regular pulses between two
consecutive pulses where polarity is altered.
This altered polarity , paused ,constant current is termed as interrupted
depolarized direct current or interrupted galvanic current
Pulse duration: 100ms
Frequency: 30 impulses per min repetitions
Pulse shape: Saw tooth, Triangular, Trapezoidal, Rectangular,
depolarized
Pulse length: 0.1to 600ms
Pulse type: Constant DC, interrupted DC, surged interrupted DC
Depolarized and surged interrupted depolarized DC
Dosage: Regular 20-30 contractions with an average of 90-100
contractions per muscle per day.

 Indications:
 Used in Iontophoresis
 Stimulation of denervated fibers
 Maintain properties of muscles
 Help muscle to maintain nutrition
 Improve absorption
 Prevents venous and lymphatic stasis
 Maintain the working hypertrophy of denervated muscle
 Improve local circulation
 Prevent contractures

 Contraindications:
 Hypersensitive skin
 loss of skin sensation
 Metal plates
 Pins area
 Peacemaker
SUINUSOIDAL CURRENT
Sinusoidal currents are evenly alternating low frequency current. In
treatment it is important to reduce current cyclically to zero.
Pulse duration: 100 stimuli per sec
Frequency: 50Hz
Pulse shape: Sign wave, complex wave, triangular square wave
Pulse length: 10 ms
Pulse type: surged rectangular, surged triangular, saw tooth
Dosage: 60-80 V with step down transformer

 Indications:
 Pain
 Pain and swelling: 10 min surged + un surged=alteration of semi
permeability of cell memberane ,allowing diffusion of ion and
absorption of exudates.

 Contraindications:
 Skin lesion
 Infections
 Impaired Sensation
DIADYNAMIC CURRENT
These currents are the variation of sinusoidal currents and wave form
involves sign or double phase rectification of an alternating current.
For therapeutic purposes these currents are made available in five
different forms:
 Fixed mono phase
 Fixed diphase
 Short pulse
 Long periods
 Rhythmic syncop
Pulse duration: 100 msec
Frequency: 50 Hz
Pulse shape: mono phase fix, diphase fix, courtes periods , long
periods
Pulse length: 100 stimuli per sec
Pulse Type: regular and interrupted Diadynamic current
 Intensity: it should be gradually increases until definite vibrations
and pricking sensations occur.
 Duration: not more then 12 minutes, each type 3 minutes.
 Frequency: daily or every other day for 12sessions.

 Indications:
 Soft tissue injury
 Pain
 Sudeck’s atrophy
 Peripheral nerve injury as neuralgia
 Contraindications:
 Open skin
 Boney areas
 Loss of sensation
 Infections
 Unreliable patient
 Superficial metals
 Thrombosis

 MEDIUM FREQUENCY CURRENTS

Trans-cutaneous application of two alternating medium frequency

currents use to produce low frequency therapeutic effects.
Types:
Following are the types of medium frequency currents:
 Interferential current
 Static Interference
 Dynamic interference
 Bipolar interference
 Russian current
 Rebox current

Pulse duration: 0.1ms

Frequency: 400Hz
Pulse shape: mono phasic, Biphasic
Pulse length:1ms
Pulse type: Trained
Dosage: one frequency is fixed i.e 4000Hz and other is in between
4000-4250Hz

 Indications:
 Pain
 Motor Stimulation
 Stress incontinence

 Contra-indications:
 Cardiac peacemaker
 Advance cardiac disease
 Hypertension
 Thrombosis
 Hemorrhage
 Pregnancy
 Neoplasm
 TB
 Fever
 Infections
