Introduction to Social Work
Social work is a profession that focuses on people of all ages. The definition
given by the International Federation of Social Workers is,
The above definition states that social work values include solving
problems, enhancing well-being, human rights, social justice, empowerment,
social change and liberation. The definition of the word ‘values’ differs depending
on whether you are talking about personal values or professional values. Personal
values are a set of principles that support people’s actions or behaviors.
Professional values are guidelines like the Code of Practice set up by the Care
Council for Wales that all social care workers must adhere to. As a social worker
our personal values must not interfere with our professional values. We must be
professional at all times.
The role of a social worker is to shield vulnerable people, develop
relationships and where possible help families to stay together while sticking to
these guidelines. They also support people to enable them to live a happy life as
possible. Social workers work as part of multi-disciplinary teams with other
professions such as education, health and probation services. This is to make sure
that all aspects of the service users’ life is taken into consideration when help is
being discussed. If this is completed effectively no aspect of the service users life
if left without any help if it is needed. Social workers work in various different
organizations. Some work for local authorities in children and adult services
departments there are also social workers working in hospitals and the voluntary
and private sector.
Reflection about Social Work
Social workers are usually motivated either by personal experience,
something that has happened in their lives, or by a desire to see that people
receive the kind of help that they need in times of crisis. I think that looking at
these issues and trying to analyze what motivates you and what helps you to
develop professionally are critical issues in social work training. This kind of
examination spills over into a person’s professional practice because it helps the
social worker to take more care when it comes to assessing a person’s need. This
course has helped me to examine my own personal values as they relate to
values issues during the course and also how this works out in my professional
practice. In some respects values and ethics are interchangeable in this paper,
in others values represent the more personal aspect and ethics the wider context.
Discipline of Communication in Applied Social Science
Focuses on how humans use verbal and non-verbal
messages to create meaning in various settings from two
persons, groups, to mass audiences across nations using a
diverse sets of networks and media. The Discipline is
especially interested in the influence of those messages in
human behavior. Communication focuses on the process of
clearly expressing and understanding idea in written, verbal,
nonverbal, and multimodal forms.
General Reflection (How I become a Social Scientist)
Being a social worker is a great opportunity
because for me, I really want to help people to solve their
problem. I am thankful because I have a subject Discipline
and Ideas in Applied Social Science so that every lessons that
we learned is I can apply to the future. Many of the lessons
can help me to identify what I can do to help the people. I
think that this course has helped me to assess what my
personal values are, not just that they are inherited, but how
they have become my own. I believe that this process is
invaluable to my personal and professional development
and to my understanding of issues to do with values. During
my time on the course I have learned to think more deeply
about what I do and to examine my own personal values
and see how far they might be comparable to the values
issues I have been studying.
