Mechanical Key Design Problems

1) The document provides instructions and examples for sizing keys used to transmit torque between a shaft and mounted component. 2) It gives formulas and steps to calculate key dimensions based on the torque load, shaft diameter, and allowable stresses for both shear and bearing. 3) Practice problems provide examples of using the steps and formulas to design appropriate square and woodruff keys for various shaft diameters and torque loads.

ELEMENTS-I

Problem 1
• flat key mounted on a motor shaft 4 in. diameter is subjected to a maximum
twisting moment of 45,000 lbs-in. Design a suitable key assuming the design
stress in bearing to be 24,000 psi and in shear at 9000 psi.
• Shearing Length=≈ 2.5 in
2T
l=
4T r 2
• bearing/Compression length= 2.5 in l= l=
dw c t d 2w
Problem 2
• A flat key is used to prevent slipping of a cast-iron gear mounted on a shaft,
2 in. in diameter. Determine the appropriate dimensions of the key if the
gear delivers 125 hp at 250 rpm. Assume design stresses for shear and
bearing as 19,000 psi and 37,000 psi.
• Shearing Length=≈ 3.32 in 2T
l=
4T r 2
l= l=
• bearing/Compression length= 4.54 in dw c t d 2w
Practice Problem 1
• Design a square key for a 3 in. diameter shaft to withstand a torque of
30,000 lbs.-in. The design stresses in shear and bearing can be safely taken as
11,000 psi and 22,000 psi, respectively.
Practice Problem 2
• A cast-steel pulley with a hub 2 in. long delivers a torque of 4000 in.-lb. The
pulley is keyed to a 1(1/2) in. shaft by means of a square key. The key and
shaft are of steel with permissible shear stress value of 9000 psi.
• Show that the key design can be based on shear or compression, both giving same
results.
• Design a suitable key for the above system based on failure in shear.
Practice Problem 3
• A sprocket is mounted on a 1(1/2) in. diameter shaft by a woodruff key. If
the delivered torque is 7000 lbs.-in., select a suitable key and calculate the
safety factor based on shear and bearing. Assume allowable shear and bearing
stress for the key material to be 44,000 psi and 80,000 psi, respectively.
Practice Problem 4
• A bevel gear is keyed to a steel shaft by a steel feather key. The gear delivers a
torque of 7500 in.-lb. and the shaft has a 2 in. diameter. Compute the key
length if:
(a) The key has thickness = (1/2) in. and width = (3/4) in
(b) The key has thickness = (3/4) in. and width = (1/2) in
Assume permissible stress values in compression and tension of 16,500 psi
and in shear of 8500 psi, for the key material.
