LESSON 1

WHAT IS COMMUNICATION
I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

A. define communication;
B. demonstrate your understanding of the concept of communication in tangible ways
C. discuss the salient points of the concept of communication

 Openness

 The beautiful process of communication allows you to be open to each other and be more
transparent with your own thought and feelings. This is a valuable and important team habit.

IV. INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES

A. INFORMATION AND MOTIVATION PHASE

GROUP ACTIVITY

 Teacher forms groups composed of not less than three students and not more than five.
 Plan a role play that shows how you understand the concept of communication.
 The presentation must not exceed five minutes.
 You are given five minutes to prepare.
 Groups present their skit.
 After every presentation, somebody from the group explains what they have done and relates
it to the concept of communication.

B. INPUT OR CONTROL PHASE

DISCUSSION OF SALIENT POINTS

1. Communication is the sending and receiving of messages.

2. Communication is said to be "the creation and exchange of meaning.”

3. Communication is the act of conveying information for the purpose of creating a shared
understanding.

4. Almost anything that takes place in work and personal life involves communication.

5. All creatures on earth have developed means in which to convey their emotions and
thoughts to one another. However, it is the ability of humans to use words and language to
transfer specific meanings that sets them apart from the animal kingdom.

C. FOCUS OR WORKING PHASE

RECITATION / SOCRATIC METHOD

1. Why is communication important?


2. What are some of the daily activities that involve communication?
3. What would happen to us if there was no communication?
4. Can we still live our lives without communicating?
5. Do animals communicate also?
