Second Quarter
PROGRAM STANDARD: The learner demonstrates communicative competence through his/
her understanding of literature and other texts types for a deeper
appreciation of Philippine Culture and those of other
countries.
GRADE LEVEL STANDARD:The learner demonstrates communicative competence through
his/ her understanding of Philippine Literature and other texts
types for a deeper appreciation of Philippine Culture.
CONTENT STANDARD: The learner demonstrates understanding of: Philippine literature
during the Period of Apprenticeship as a means of examining
conflicts; various purposeful listening and viewing strategies;
difference between literal and figurative language; ways to extract and
condense information based on library sources; verbal and non-
verbal cues in oral communication; and types of phrases,
clauses, and sentences.
PERFORMANCE STANDARD: The learner transfers learning by: resolving conflicts presented
in literary selections; using tools and mechanisms in locating
library resources; extracting information and noting details from texts to
write a précis, summary, or paraphrase; distinguishing between and using
literal and figurative language and verbal and non-verbal cues; use
phrases, clauses, and sentences meaningfully and appropriately.

Group Activity “Word Hunt”
The teacher will post a manila paper with a jumbled words and let
the students find the name of the parts of the book.

3. Presentation
The teacher will ask her students to get their book and will let
them identify the part of the book on their own understanding.
B. Deepening Activities
The teacher will discuss the parts of the book using a power point presentation.
Parts of the Book
Cover - Tells the reader what the book will be about
- Title of the book and the authors
Title Page - Repeats the information given from the cover.
- Title of the book
- The author/s
- The name of the publisher.
Copyright Page - It guarantees ownership and protection in publishing the
book.
- It gives the date and place of publication
Preface- It gives the author’s purpose in writing the book, its organization and its
method of presentation. This part is sometimes called the Foreword or
the Introduction.
Table of Contents- It presents the main topics discussed in the book along
with the pages where they begin. The topics, divided into chapters or
units, are listed chronologically or in the order of their appearance in
the book.
Body of the Book- This is the main part of the book.
Glossary- It is a little dictionary, it helps the reader in understanding some
terms used in the book.
Index- It is detailed alphabetical listing of the ideas or topics contained in the
book, together with the pages where they are found.
Bibliography- it lists in alphabetical order the references used by the author in
writing the book.
Dedication page- it tells to whom the author dedicates the book.
Acknowledgment- it expresses the author’s gratitude to the persons who in
one way or the other helped him or her in writing the book.
Appendix- it contains added information to the books. Not all books have this
part.
Spine- Contains the title and author’s name.
Task 3. Application
Group Activity
The teacher will divide the class into 5 groups. Then, will be given a
picture in each group. They will identify if what parts of a book was being
given and present it to the class if what can be found and what is the
function of the said part.

5. Who is the publisher of your book?
V. Assignment
Use another book (any kind of book) as your reference and in your Journal
Notebook write the different parts of the book that you have found.
