Boolean search connectors
Getting targeted results, fast
Boolean search connectors indicate the relationship that two or more terms in the search expression must
have in order for a document to be included in your search results. To use Boolean connectors, simply type
your search expression using the Boolean connector that fits your specific search criteria. We’ve provided some
examples here for your reference:
CONNECTOR EXAMPLE RESULT
AND court AND appeals Return results containing both court and appeals.
“ ” “court appeals” Returns results containing exact phrase “court appeals”.
NOT misleading NOT deceptive Returns documents contacting misleading but not deceptive.
OR misleading OR deceptive Returns documents containing misleading or deceptive.
w/n home w/5 office Returns documents that contain home within 5 words of office.
Note: value of n cannot exceed 127 words.
w/sen “home office” Returns documents that contain home office within 20 words
w/sen expenses of expenses. Note: use quotation marks when searching for an
exact phrase in combination with other search terms.
w/par “home office” Returns documents that contain home office within 80 words
w/par expenses of expenses. Note: use quotation marks when searching for an
exact phrase in combination with other search terms.
f/n credit f/3 foreign Returns documents that contain credit followed by foreign by
no more than 3 words.
p/n foreign p/3 credit Returns documents that contain credit preceded by foreign by
no more than 3 words.
* depreciat* Returns documents containing depreciate, depreciating,
depreciation etc.
? ??clude Returns documents containing exclude, include, occlude etc.
TIP: A combination of above search connectors can also be used.
