Understanding Engine Combustion and Fuel Systems

This document discusses different types of engine combustion issues and fuel delivery systems. It elaborates on detonation, pre-ignition, backfire, and after-fire in combustion engines. It then lists the main systems in a carburetor and fuel injection systems, explaining the purpose of each. The document compares the RSA fuel injection system to the Teledyne Continental system, noting the RSA uses both fuel and air metering forces while the Continental only uses fuel metering forces. It also lists the 4 basic components of the Teledyne Continental system.

ASSIGNMENT 4

1. Elaborate;
a. Detonation.

Detonation is the abrupt combustion or explosion of the fuel charge inside the
cylinder. During normal combustion, the spark plugs ignite the fuel charge and the
fuel has a consistent and even burn as the piston moves through the power stroke
and chemical energy is efficiently converted to mechanical.

b. Pre-ignition.

Pre-Ignition is defined as combustion that begins before it is intended to, before the
regular timed spark. Pre-Ignition can occur alone or as a result of detonation. Hot
spots from detonation, improper heat range spark plugs and glowing carbon deposits
from lean mixtures are common causes of pre-ignition.

c. Backfire

Combustion or an explosion produced by a running internal combustion engine that

occurs in the air intake system rather than inside the combustion chamber.

d. After-fire

Unburnt fuel that is ignited in the exhaust system can produce loud sounds even if
flames are not present at the tailpipe. This is called an afterburn or after-fire since a
backfire occurs through the intake system. A visible flame may momentarily shoot
out of the exhaust pipe under some conditions. Either condition may cause a loud
popping noise and usually indicates an improperly tuned engine.
2.
a. List down 5 main system in Carburetor.

– MAIN METERING.
– IDLING.
– MIXTURE CONTROL.
– ACCELERATING.
– POWER ENRICHMENT OR ECONOMIZER.

b. Explain the purpose and function of each listed system above.

• PURPOSE IS TO SUPPLY THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF FUEL TO THE ENGINE AT

ALL SPEEDS ABOVE IDLE.

3.
a. List down 4 main system in RSA Fuel Injection System.
– VENTURI HOUSING.

– FUEL METERING UNIT.

– FUEL REGULATOR.

– FLOW DIVIDER.
b. Explain the purpose and function of each listed system above.

– VENTURI HOUSING.
TO CONTROL THE AIRFLOW FOR ENGINE IDLING.

– FUEL METERING UNIT.

TO CONTROL THE AMOUNT OF FUEL FLOW INTO AND OUT OF THE METERING JET.

– FUEL REGULATOR.
SUPPLY CORRECT AMOUNT OF FUEL TO THE ENGINE.

– FLOW DIVIDER.

METERED FUEL FLOW FROM THE REGULATOR TO THE FLOW DIVIDER.

4.
a. What is the main difference of Teledyne Continental Fuel Injection System betwen
RSA system?

• RSA system uses both fuel and air metering forces to meter fuel. While the
TCM system only uses fuel metering forces.

b. List down 4 basic components of Teledyne Continental Fuel Injection System.

• Engine driven fuel pump (the heart

• F.C.U
• Fuel Mianifold a.k.a Spider (ball valve)
• fuel nozzle
