CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

A. Background
Mentions of the term refer to the era of ancient Rome. In I century AD, Pliny the Younger,
the teacher on the oratory who invented homework, asked his followers in Quintilian to
participate in at-home activities. The practice was aimed at developing speaking skills of a
person in a more informal atmosphere. Results of homework assignments were just
impressive; such teaching approach was used by other tutors moving forward. An Italian
pedagogic Roberto Nevilis is considered the real “inventor” of homework. He was the
person who invented homework in far 1905 and made it a punishment to his students.
Since time when was homework invented, this practice has become popular around the
world.

The end of the 19th century is notable due to significant changes in the education system.
Great developments were associated with some changes in terms how frequently and what
kind of homework was given by a tutor. This all affected education quality. Teachers
following the approach of a tutor who invented the homework considered the fulfillment
of homework as a necessary type of training; it was a compulsory part of training. From
that point of view, teaching can hardly move forward without home lessons. Homework
was defined as one of forms of independent work. Attaching great importance to the
ability of the student to learn independently. In order for an at-home task to perform
functions set by a tutor, it should meet the following criteria:
 it must be feasible;
 it should not be large and complex;
 It is not to be set at the beginning of training until students learn how to work
independently.

Learning at home can contribute to the general studying process. One of important tasks
the modern school is facing is to improve quality of teaching. And homework is a great
tool; a person who invented homework is a real hero in this regard. You can gain a lot of
knowledge with a professional helper.

CHAPTER 2

DISCUSSION

A. Positive Impact of Homework

1. Students are able to effectively divide time between study and play time.
Homework can be a trigger for students to be responsible for managing their time. He
will learn to divide the time between play time and study time. In this way students will
realize how valuable time is and will not waste time in vain.
2. Students can review lessons in school
Homework can also be a material for reviewing lessons in school. Students learn to
remember what they previously learned in school through homework provided by the
teacher, so that the memory power of students about the material becomes strong.
3. Checking students' understanding of what is learned in school
Homework can be used as material for student evaluations to determine their ability to
understand what they have previously learned at school.
4. Homework as a forum for exploring student knowledge
Homework can broaden students' knowledge to dig deeper into what they have learned
previously. Sometimes what is in their homework assignments is enrichment material
whose search requires answers beyond what is in the books they have but still have a
connection with the material.
5. Maturation of concepts to move to the next material.
Maturation of concepts obtained through homework teaching can make it easier for
students to understand advanced material which certainly has to do with previous
material.

3
B. Negative Impact of Homework
1. Stress
Homework that is too much can make students depressed so that they do not like the
lesson. It happened because they were too bored with the amount of homework they
did. In a study published in the Journal of Experimental Education by taking a sample
of 4,317 students at 10 favorite high schools in California mentioned that 56% of
students consider homework as the main source of stress.
2. Declining Health
The National Education Association and National Parent-Teacher Association
Guidelines set a rule for doing homework called the 10-minute rule. The purpose of
these rules is the homework time for each class is a multiple of 10 minutes. This means
that class 1 has 10 minutes to do homework every night, second class 20 minutes, until
class 12 120 minutes.
If homework exceeds these hours, it can be burdensome for students and have a
negative impact on student health. They become sleep deprived so that the immune
system weakens and is susceptible to disease.
3. Less time for family and friends.
When they have a lot of homework, then their social interaction will also decrease,
especially to their family and friends. They become too focused on doing homework
and do not pursue hobbies that they enjoy.
Now that was some of the impact of giving homework for students from two aspects,
namely positive and negative aspects. After looking further, here we can assess that the
right homework in accordance with its portion can have a positive impact and if it
exceeds the portion it becomes a boomerang for students.
Therefore practitioners in the world of education need to consider the right portion
when giving homework to their students. Specify the objectives and benefits that can
later be obtained by students and design homework that can develop their skills on the
material being taught not just to fulfill obligations. Good luck and hopefully useful.
C. How to Deal With The Negative Effects of Homework
way of to face negative impact [of] homework which that is by doing duty at the same time relax
can by listening song.

B. Recommendation
Therefore practitioners in the world of education need to consider the right portion when
