PRODUCTION PROBLEM ON VEGETABLE FARMING
IN BRGY. KANSANOC
ABSTRACT
This is a descriptive qualitative study that aimed to determine the production problem
on vegetable farming in Brgy. Kansanoc, Kawayan. Through the conduct of a structured
interview with the vegetable farmers, and the residents. Researchers were able to
determine six production problem. The six themes that were found as production problem
on vegetable farming were fertilizer problem, water problem, flood problem, financial
problem, gardening tools problem, and the seedlings problem. This signifies that
economic, environmental, and governmental problem arises if production problem on
vegetable farming will not be observed and give and immediate solutions for the
vegetable farmer in Brgy, Kansanoc, Kawayan, Biliran.
Keywords: Production Problem, Vegetable Farming
INTRODUCTION
Growing of vegetables crops is primarily use as human food consumption.
Profitable vegetable farming requires attention to all production operations, including
insect, disease, and weed control and efficient marketing. The kind of vegetable grown is
mainly determined by consumer demands, which can be defined in terms of variety, size,
tenderness and flavors, freshness, and type of pack (Warid A. Warid, Vegetable farming
2019).
Generally, in planting vegetables human can’t control the problem that will affect the
process of production, because problem is essential to all farming operations. A lot of
problems can happen in the garden that can confuse the average gardener. Pest and
diseases can wreak havoc on home gardens and farms. Vegetables pest and planting
diseases is the issues that related to the environment like weather conditions, nutrition,
and even those caused by people or animals (Urban Farmer, Common Vegetable
Problems, 2019).
The production problem on vegetable farming is the supply, land, labor, capital,
entrepreneurship, and technology. In which the problem encountered by the residents in
Brgy. Kansanoc is affecting the community. Because of the financial problem, fertilizer
problem, water problem, seedlings problem, gardening tools problem, and flood problem.
In Brgy. kansanoc, Kawayan, Biliran, vegetable farming is the cost of income and
is also for consumption. Both male or female were involved in planting vegetables and
have a different strategy in planting vegetables. Most farmers grow vegetables like bitter
gourd, eggplant, okra, string beans, lemon grass, malunggay, squash and etc. The
harvest time is usually from 1 to 2 months for eggplant, Okra, bitter gourd, while other
plants were harvest from 3 to 5 months like squash, bitter gourd, string beans, and lemon
grass. In Barangay Kansanoc, every household residence has vegetable gardens. For
small lands and farms for large one. When the researchers interviewed the barangay
chairperson, it has been pointed out that vegetable farming is one problem felt by the
community. These challenges motivated the researchers to evaluate the problems
encountered by vegetable farmers in terms of production.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The main purpose of the study is to identify production problem met by vegetable
farmers in Brgy. Kansanoc, Kawayan, Biliran.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
This study is a descriptive study using qualitative method. Descriptive study as
describe by Ana Maria Do Regala (2013), is primarily concerned with finding out “What
is” and might be applied to investigate. And that, qualitative research is empirical research
where the data are not in the form of numbers (Punch, 1998, p. 4). This means that
qualitative researchers study things in natural settings, attempting to make sense of, or
interpret, phenomena in terms of the meanings people bring to them (Denzin and Lincoln
1994).
The qualitative tools that used is through a structured interview. Structured
interview was guided the researchers in interviewing 5 vegetable farmer owners and 5
vegetable farmer workers. The structured interview questionnaire has been set in order
to identify the production problem of vegetable in terms of supply, land, labor, capital,
entrepreneurship, and technology and to determine the main problems of the participants
if it has been solved or not.
Moreover, to identify the participants or key informants, purposive sampling was
used. purposive sampling is a prior knowledge about the purpose of the studies so that it
can properly choose and approach eligible participants (Ben Foley 2018). The inclusion
criteria used by the researchers were (1) vegetable farmer and (2) residents in Brgy.
Kansanoc, Kawayan, Biliran. The key informants for the structured interview were 8
females and 2 males with an age ranging from 27 to 60 years old. And the years in farming
vegetables is 1 to 20 years.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Basing from the structured interview, 6 themes were identified as production
problem of vegetable farmers. The problem is separately discussed below.
Fertilizer Problem
According to Philippine Star (2015), the problem of organic fertilizers is that it is
more expensive than inorganic fertilizers.
as the researcher interviewed locals in the community, it reveals that:
Lack of fertilizer and insectecides. (walay suppy sa abuno ug pangpalit
ug pang spary sa tanom)) (F1)
With this, the researchers were able to observed how crucial fertilizer is for
vegetable farmer. In which it is hard for the vegetable farmer to buy fertilizer because of
an expensive price.
Water Problem
As stipulated by Mary Ellen Ellis (2019), not enough water is one of the most
common reasons that plants are unhealthy, wilt, and dead. It’s not always easy, even for
expert gardeners, to get watering right. Thus,
Difficulty in watering plants. (Naglisod sa tubig pang bisbis sa tanom)
(farmer 3)
Lack of water supply. (kulang sa tubig) (farmer 4,5,5,7, and 8)
When interviewed the researchers found out that water is a problem for farmers in Brgy.
Kansanoc, Kawayan, Biliran.
Flood Problem
In an article, Nikki Tilley (2019) explained that, most flood damage in the garden
does occur results from standing water that’s lasted for several days or even weeks. As
long as water recedes within a few days, most shrubs and trees will normally bounce back
with little or no damage at all. However, for some plants, a week or more of flooding can
cause severe injury and death, particularly for vegetable crops and tender herbaceous
plants like carrots and potato. This make the vegetable farmer in Barangay Kansanoc
worry that they stated:
The land was not good, it is only a small land area, flooded especially if
it Rains.
(Dili mayo ang yuta na gitamnan, gamay lang ang gitamnan na yuta,
mabahaan tubigon ang yuta sa gitamnan pag muuwan.) (F2,5,7, and 8).
The researcher believed that most of the land area where vegetables are planted
becomes a flooded area that brought problem to the farmer. If rainy comes in the
Province, farmers may not be able to sustain financial needs of every family. These
problem is very disturbing for those farmers who have an area which leads to flooding,
because they can’t control it, and the damage that may occur can harm their living as a
residents in the Brgy.
Financial Problem
As explained by Miriam Caldwell People face a wide variety of financial problems.
The trouble might begin because you have a hard time or a distaste for budgeting, then
it blooms from there into additional issues that can have serious implications.
There is no maintenance for the plants.
(Walay ika maintenance sa mga tanom) (Farmer 3)
Not enough money to pay in farming. (walay ikasuhol sa
Pagtanom) (farmer 1, and 10).
The researcher observed that farmers on vegetable farming encountered financial
issue in which it is hard for their living in Brgy. Because most of the time they are lacking
of money for food consumption, that is why they try to plant vegetables in order to sustain
their daily needs.
Gardening Tools Problem
According to the “How to choose gardening equipment and tools”. when you are
choosing and buying gardening products, you are often faced with a huge range of
different models and brand names. By following a few simple hints and tips you can keep
things simple, and avoid expensive mistakes.
Only Bolo is used in planting (bolo lang ang gigamit sa tanom)
(F6).
Lack of materials in planting vegeatables (Kulang sa kagamitan
para sa pagtanom ug mga utanon) (F7).
It was hard because I am the only one, and the area is wide (Naglisod
kay usa lang man ko, tapos dako ang lugar) (F4&F5)
It is a problem because it is lack of materials to be used in harvesting
(Problema kay kulang sa materials para pag ani) (F9)
The researcher observed that farmers on vegetable farming encountered
gardening tools issue. In which in Brgy. Kansanoc, is worrying about their vegetable
farming because it hard for them to manage the vegetable farming due to the lack of
gardening tools like bolo’s so the researcher believes that using bolo is not essential for
the entire area especially those who have a big area on vegetable farming.
Seedlings Problem
As explained by, Sunday Gardener (2017), Many people choose to start seeds
indoors. There are many advantages to this method. However, there are also some
common problems you might encounter. It’s important for all beginner gardeners to know
about these potential disadvantages before they try to start seeds indoors.
The most common problems you may encounter include: Damping off, Mold, Poor
germination, Legginess.
No money to buy seeds of vegetables. (Dili makasya ang
kwarta para I palit ug binhi) (F9)
seedlings sa tanom, mahal ang seedlings) (F6,7,9).
The researcher observed that farmers on vegetable farming encountered seedlings
issue, in which in planting vegetables there is always a few kinds of vegetables that they
are planting. Most of the time the seeds are given by their neighbors or the officials in the
Brgy. Kansanoc, Kawayan, Biliran.
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
The researchers concluded that the production problem on vegetable in Brgy.
Kansanoc, Kawayan, Biliran were fertilizer problem, water problem, financial problem,
gardening tools problem, and seedling problem. The barangay must secure a way that
this problem may be solved immediately because this
interviewed the barangay chairperson, it has been pointed out that vegetable farming is
one problem felt by the community.
The results of the study are that the production problem on vegetable farming is
fertilizer problem, water problem, financial problem, Gardening tools problem, flooding
problem, and seedlings problem. In which the researcher discussed that in the production
problem in Brgy. Kansanoc affects the community.
Thus, the recommendations that may apply is the properly planning, preparing, and
maintaining the vegetable farming it reduces the chances for problems to develop. When
vegetable problem to occur, it is important to accurately identify them, so proper control
and management strategies can be implemented. We encourage every gardener and
farmer to try every organic and natural means possible before resorting to harsh
chemicals that are bad on plants and the environment.
