NILETESOL/RELO FELT CERTIFICATE SCHOLARSHIP
PROGRAM
NileTESOL members who are interested in the Fundamentals of English Language
Teaching (FELT) training certificate offered by the Career Development Department
(CDD), School of Continuing Education, the American University in Cairo can apply
for a scholarship granted by the Regional English Language Office (RELO) at the
American Embassy in Cairo, to attend the course.
There are four remaining scholarships out of a total of twenty to be offered to
current active NileTESOL members who have not applied for or received any other
scholarship under the NileTESOL Teacher Training Grant. These scholarships are
designed to support the professional development of Egyptian teachers who are
strongly committed to the ELT profession and who are committed to disseminating
the knowledge and skills they will gain from FELT to other teachers around Egypt
who have not yet had an opportunity to benefit from such a training program.
Course Description:
Fundamentals of English Language Teaching (FELT) Program
Fundamentals of English Language Teaching (FELT) is a 60-hour teacher training
program that exposes and prepares pre-service and in-service teachers to the most
essential EFL classroom skills, strategies and techniques to take their first practical
steps in the profession of teaching. The outcomes of this course have been
designed in line with the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education
(NCATE) 2009 standards. The course covers five main areas of pedagogy,
namely:
Language Learning Practice and Theory
Teaching Methods and Classroom Management
Teaching Integrated Skills
Classroom Assessment and
Teacher Autonomy
Each course lasts 24 working days with a total of 60 contact hours over six weeks.
Trainees meet four times a week for about three hours per working day. During the
course, candidates:
1. Attend input sessions (each session is 1 hour 30 minutes);
2. Engage in supervised peer teaching;
3. Discuss learning theory readings and classroom practices;
4. Receive feedback on and make comments about individual teaching
performance at the end of each practicum session.
Course Assessment:
a. Formative
1. Class Discussions (Trainers will use a rubric to guide their evaluation of
teacher-students’ performance and contributions during discussions.)
2. Class Activities (self-assessment and peer assessment rubrics will be
used by teacher students)
3. Written reflections on preparation for micro-teaching assignments.

An Achievement Certificate will be awarded to trainees on successful completion of
the training program.
The training program does not automatically lead to employment in the Languages
Department, SCE, AUC. Candidates who wish to join the Languages Department
are required to follow SCE hiring procedures.
PROGRAM LOGISTICS
Criteria for Selection:
Candidates should:
- Be Egyptian citizens.
- Be university graduates (preferably from the Faculty of Arts, Education
or Alsun).
- Be 22 – 45 years old.
- Preferably be teaching or planning to teach in the very near future.
- Have excellent command of English – oral and written.
- Have basic computer skills (Windows and Office applications).
- Have no formal teacher training certificates such as PCTEFLA, CELTA,
ITTP, PCELT, FELT-YL, PCT, PED etc.
- Be able and willing to apply new teaching methods and theories.
- Provide two references and two signed and sealed letters of
recommendation.

Education, the American University in Cairo, 24 Falaki Street, Bab El Louk, Cairo
Course Schedule:
Duration: September 14 – October 27, 2017
Days: Either Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays or Fridays and
Saturdays (The exact hours will be specified at the beginning of the course.)
Course Prerequisite: A minimum score equivalent to B2 on the Common
European Framework of Reference (CEFR), Level B2A on SEPT (SCE, AUC’s
English placement test)

Same day service: LE 350
The SEPT fee is to be paid by the applicants and is non-refundable/non-
reimbursable.
Application Process and Deadlines
Interested applicants should submit the attached FELT application form, duly filled,
along with the following documents by August 20, 2017:
A scanned copy of the SEPT score
A scanned copy of the national identity card
An updated curriculum vitae (CV)
A scanned copy of the university degree
A scanned copy of any relevant training certificates
An experience certificate from the current employer
The attached Citizenship Declaration Form, duly filled and signed
Two letters of reference on the referees’ letterhead signed in ink to be sent
directly by the referees in sealed envelopes to the following address:
