Intro: Intro:
This podcast is brought to you by students like yourself
who continue to ask the age-old question, When will I
ever use math in real life? Or Why do I even need this?
Monologue: Who you are:
My name is Audrey Parcell, but you can call me Ms.
Parcell, your math teacher!
Content: Content within podcast:
So, you have been assigned to listen to this podcast
because you asked the question that should never be
asked in class, or you repeated the joke that “Math is
the only place where people buy 60 watermelons, and
no one wonders why.”
For starters, having math skills allows us to be a
problem solver in many different work fields and in life.
Let’s look at some examples of where math applies to
your real life!
1. Do you like to cook? Did you know that reading
recipes, and purchasing the food used in them all
require that you discuss money “which involves
math” and FRACTIONS! “which are all math!” To
double or triple the size of a recipe you have to
know how to add or multiply fractions properly,
otherwise your food won’t turn out good at all!
Conversions are also an important part of
following recipes when they use Celsius or the
metric system, and students can find doing the
math a fun part of the cooking experience.
2. Do you enjoy shopping and saving money? Well to
get the best discounts you need to understand the
math of percent. For example, if an item is on sale
for 30% off and you have a coupon for 25% off,
does that mean that you get 55% off your total
purchase or do you get 25% off of the 30% off
sale price? It gets tricky if you don’t know math!
3. What if you want to buy new furniture? You have
to measure the room to make sure it will fit! Well
guess what you are still applying math!
Measurement, conversions, addition, subtraction,
they are all involved in building and placing
furniture and other items.
4. We all go grocery shopping, and that involves a
lot of math. Each time you calculate the price per
unit, weigh produce, figure percentage discounts,
and estimate the final price, you're using math in
your shopping experience.
5. What is your parents’ favorite things to pay for?
BILLS! You will have to pay them someday too,
and they involve lots of math, trying to find the
best utility rate, phone company, etc. It’s all about
comparisons.
6. What about Algebra you ask? well when you go to
buy a car you just might look into the gas mileage
and if you go about comparing the gas mileage on
a vehicle your do an age-old algebra problem!
7. What about Geometry? Well, have you ever
packed a car for vacation or played a game of
pool, well you can become a pro at both of those
through basic geometry skills!

Closing: Closing statement:

This list could go on and on, but now it’s your turn! I
need you to find one use of math in the real world that
you do or see every day. Thank you so much for
listening to this assigned podcast, have a great rest of
your day!
