Continuing Professional Development

1. Explain the methods of professional development below

Professional Description
Development
Method
Induction training Induction training is to merge new employees
into the company and make them understand
the systems and procedures followed by the
organisation. Induction training is mostly
beneficial for the new employees as it allows
them to settle down quickly in the new work
environment also giving them a sense of
belonging.
Performance A performance appraisal is a regular review of
appraisal an employee's job performance and overall
contribution to the company. This review
tends to happen every 6-12 month interval.
This could also be an opportunity to build a
relationship with your employer but also talk
about the problems you are not able to solve
alone.
On the job/ off the On-the-job training is learning new things
job training while working within the workplace or
environment. However, off-the-job training is
studying outside the course, this tends to
happen because it allows them to fully
understand the work they partake in but also
giving them an opportunity to learn new
things.
Coaching and Coaching and mentoring are opportunities to
mentoring progress based on the use of one-to-one
conversations to enhance an individual's skills,
knowledge but most importantly the
individual’s work performance. Mentoring is
essentially a more advanced version of
coaching.
Graduate training This is in regards to people who are out of
programme university, they are then placed into an
intense training programme. Graduate training
programmes are offered by many large
employers. They typically last a year or
longer, some possibly extended to 18 months,
while others last for two or three years. A
single employer can run more than one type
of training programme within their
organisation.
Management Management training is used to help an
training employee focus on improving an individual's
skills as a leader and manager. There may be
an emphasis on soft skills, such as
communication and empathy, which enable
better teamwork and more progressive
relationships with the people they manage.
Secondments A secondment is essentially being placed into
another department, taking care of someone
else’s job. This tends to happen when an
employee is out on paternity leave and instead
of bringing in a contractor which could be
quite expensive, there are more cost efficient
methods such as allowing another employee
work in their line of work. This can be useful
for the employee working as it allows them to
try new things.
Shadowing In job shadowing, a business typically partners
with an educational establishment to provide
an experience for a student of what it is like to
perform a certain type of work by having them
accompany an experienced worker as they
perform the targeted job.
E-Learning E-learning is learning new things via the
internet. It can be useful for people who don’t
like interacting with the people surrounding
them due a lowered confidence.
Vocational & Vocational courses provide training and
professional qualifications related to a specific job, such as
courses being a manager or even a hairdresser.
Job rotation Job Rotation is a management approach where
employees are shifted between two or more
assignments or jobs at regular intervals of
time in order to expose them to all verticals of
an organisation.
Lifelong learning Lifelong learning can be conducted in a variety
of different ways, whether it’s through formal
training, or something far less structured. It
can include being taken through instruction or
coaching, but the term also includes any form
of self-taught learning.
Retraining Retraining is a practice employers may require
their workers to make them learn new skills.
Although most employees will receive training
at the very beginning of their employment,
further training may be necessary down the
line in order to avoid having a stagnant
workforce. Retraining is also highly useful for
the workers because they are learning new
skills that could make them more viable
candidates should they have looked for new
work elsewhere.

2. Explain which of these methods you may need to

achieve your career aim and why

The main method I could possibly need to achieve the role of

what I have chosen is Job Rotation. I chose this because it would
help me to learn skills which I wouldn’t have learnt before but
most importantly give me skills I need to enable me to become a
Marketing Manager. The most important skill I would most likely
learn is confidence as I would be moving quite often and meeting
new people.

A performance appraisal could help me as if I were to be doing

bad, my manager at the time would find ways to motivate me to
work harder similar if I was also doing good.
