SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN HEALTH 9
I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard: The learners are expected to demonstrate understanding of the dangers of
substance use and abuse of the individual, family and community.
B. Performance Standard: The learners are expected to share responsibility with community members
through participation in community efforts to prevent and control substance use and abuse.
C. Learning Competencies: At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to:
1. Describe the drug scenario in the Philippines (H9S-IIa-14)
2. Explain the concept of drug dependence, drug use, drug misuse and drug abuse. (H9S-IIA-15)
3. Discusses strategies in the prevention and control of substance use and abuse. (H9S-IIe-f-23)
4. Applies decision-making and resistance skills to prevent substance use and abuse. (H9S-IIg-h-24)

III. PROCEDURES:
1. Preparation
A. Reviewing Previous Lesson/Presenting the New Lesson
Presenting the new lesson by a game name ADD (Agree, Disagree, Don’t Know)- In this
game learners will stay behind the line with their classmates. The line can be a chalk line or an adhesive tape.
There will be three card boards with the following labels: Agree, Disagree, Don’t Know. The teacher will read
statements to the class and the learners will decide whether they agree, disagree, or don’t know the answer.
They will move only when they hear the command “GO!”. Learners are instructed to go to the location which
suits their values, beliefs and feelings. They are also instructed to avoid pushing and pulling their classmates.
The teacher may ask them about their decisions and tell them that they can change their decisions. The
teacher will proceed to the next statement until all statements have been read. Generalization about the
game proceeds afterwards.
B. Establishing a Purpose for the lesson
K-W-L CHART
In this activity, learners are instructed to list ideas they heard about drugs and drug scenario in the Philippines.
They will write these in the K (What I Know) column. Tell them afterwards to list things they want to know in
the W (Want to Know) column and leave the L (What I learned) column unanswered yet. This activity will
assess their prior knowledge about drugs of abuse and the present drug scenario in our country. This is to
prepare them for the lesson proper.
C. Presenting Examples/Instances of the Lesson
A video clip about drug scenario in the Philippines will be shown to the learners to give clearer view
about the lesson. Here are the guide questions to be discussed with the learners after watching the video:
1. What can you say about the video you have watched?
2. Do you believe that the incidence of drug use in the Philippines is really decreasing? Why or why not?
3. What is the current drug scenario in your school? In your community?
Unlocking of Difficulties
Let us look more concepts. Before proceeding to the lesson proper, let us add some words to our students’
vocabulary. These are the following words that needs to be presented to the students and after which they need to use
it in a sentence.
Direction: Match the words in Column A that corresponds to the definitions stated in Column B.

A. DRUGS Any substance or chemicals which when taken into
the body either through nasal, oral, transdermal or
intravenous way have psychological, emotional and
behavioral effects on a person.
B. DRUG DEPENDENCE A cluster of physiological, behavioral and cognitive
phenomena of variable intensity in which the use of
drug takes on a high priority thereby creating a
strong desire to take the substance.
C. DRUG MISUSE It refers to the use of substance incoherent or
inconsistent with the prescribed dosage or frequency
of use.

The teacher will ask the learners to fill out the necessary concepts about each term related to drugs.

These are the following questions that learners need to answer to assess if they we’re able to
understand the lessons presented.
1. Define Drugs? Give examples of drugs that you know. What are the terms related to drugs?
2. What is Drug Dependence? What are the terms related to it?
3. What is Drug Misuse? What are the terms related to it?
4. Describe the drug scenario in the Philippines. What can you say about this matter?
F. Finding Practical Applications of Concepts and Skills in Daily Living
What is your Choice?
Learners will be divided into 2 groups. Each group will form a big circle. The teacher will read out each
statement and learners will show their feelings towards each statement through body gestures appropriate with
their answers. They will do the double thumbs up and placed on the cheeks for AGREE, cover the eyes for
DISAGREE, and look up for UNDECIDED.
Statements:
1. Smoking should be banned in public places.
2. It is okay for students to use cigarettes and alcohol
3. Our law is causing teenagers to try alcoholic drinks
4. Severe penalties for drug use will stop people from using drugs.
5. Parents should be held responsible for their children who are into drug use.
G. Making Generalizations and Abstractions about the Lesson
Ask students to answer these questions:
1. What have you learned from our lesson today?
2. As a student and as a resident of your community, what are the suggestions that you can give to
lessen the cases of drug use, misuse and abuse especially among teenagers?
H. Evaluating Learning
Now that the learners know the present drug scenario in the Philippines have the common
terms used in the study of the substance use and abuse, they need to show what they have learned in a creative
way. Learners will be divided into 4 groups to show their learnings in a creative way. Learners may sing, dance,
role-play or recite a poem about drug awareness. Each group is given 3 minutes to showcase their performance.
The rubric below will be the basis for grading the learners in their group performance.
