Extracting Pure Caffeine from Coffee

The document describes a procedure to extract pure caffeine from coffee using solvent extraction. Key steps include: (1) mixing ground coffee with water and calcium carbonate, then boiling and filtering the solution; (2) adding chloroform to the filtrate which separates it into two layers, with caffeine dissolving in the bottom layer; (3) evaporating the solvents to leave behind crude caffeine. The procedure uses various lab equipment and chemicals to isolate caffeine through selective dissolution and separation based on differences in solubility.

CAFFEINE EXTRACTION

How To Extract Pure Caffeine From Coffee ?

BACKGROUND

Extraction is a technique in which a solvent is used to remove/isolate a compound of interest

from a liquid substance. For example, coffee is a liquid which contains dissolved caffeine.
The extraction will be carried out by simply adding a portion of solvent to the coffee.

TOOLS

1. Analytical Balance : Used for measuring mass.

2. Watch glass : Used to hold solids while they are being weighed or to cover a beaker.
3. Beaker Glass : Used to hold, mix, and heat liquids
4. Stirring rod : Used for stirring and mixing liquid
5. Separating funnel : a funnel to separate solutions into some layers because its density
6. Heater : to heat the solution
7. Funnel : Used to transfer liquids or fine-grained materials into containers with small
openings. Also used for filtration.
8. Measuring cylinder : Used to measure a precise volume of a liquid.
9. Pipet Bulb : Used to draw liquids into a pipe.
10. Volumetric Pipet : Used to measure small amounts of liquid very accurately.
11. Spray bottle : for aquadest
12. Filter Paper : to filter the solutions and hold its sediment
13. Weighing Paper : Used to hold solids while they are being weighed
14. Evaporating Dish : Used to heat liquids for evaporation.

MATERIALS
 Coffee powder
 CaCO3
 Chloroform
 Aquadest
PROCEDURE

1. First, Weigh 3 ,75 grams of coffee in analytical Balance

2. Put coffee in a beaker glass, then Add 37.5 ml of distilled water (aquadest)

3. Add 2.5 grams of CaCO 3 , then boil it on heater

4. After the solution boiled, Filter the solution with filter paper, Separate the

filtrate from its sediment.

5. After that, Heat the filtrate until 1/3 its volume, and wait until the filtrate’s

temperature as same as room temperature.

6. Next, put the solution into a separating funnel and add 7.5 ml of chloroform,

then whisk.

7. In separating funnel, the solution separates into two layerd, top and bottom. Put

the bottom solution into beaker glass

8. And then, add 1 ml of chloroform to the top solution in the separating funnel

and homogenize it.

9. Next, put the bottom and top layers into the same beaker and evaporate until

dry.

10. Finally, weigh the caffeine’s crude.
