Grade 10 Science Lesson on Menstrual Cycle

The document provides a daily lesson plan for a Grade 10 science class on the menstrual cycle. The lesson plan includes the learning competency, which is to describe the feedback mechanism involved in regulating processes in the female reproductive system like the menstrual cycle. The lesson will use an inquiry-based learning model and integrate literacy skills. Activities include eliciting students' prior knowledge about puberty changes, engaging students by having them complete a word chart about secondary sex characteristics, and explaining the menstrual cycle using a video and questions.

- The following are the pictures to be used.

B. ENGAGE
- Teacher will ask student to complete the word chart.
- Students will place the words which are related to secondary
characteristic of male and female.
- The chart below will be utilized during the lesson

2
- The following are the words to be use to complete the word - Students will post the correct
chart; word to the appropriate column in
the word chart. But before doing

to the word chart.

Say: Before posting it to the chart, please describe or tell something

about the word.

- After doing the word chart, teacher will ask question. Student Response:
1. Ejaculation of sperm
Ask: 1. Which among the following words compose of complex Menstruation. (Explanation varies)
process which consist of series of events? Explain your answer
-
Say: Very good, both of menstruation and sperm ejaculation are
compose of process before such characteristic is being observed.
For boys, before sperms are ejaculated out the penis it has to undergo
sperm production and maturation wherein there are glands in the male
reproductive system which would make the sperm equip for its
journey to the female organ or vaginal wall.
For girls, there are complex processes with series of events in the
female reproductive organ before menstruation occurs. Just like the
male, in female, production and maturation of egg cell takes place.

C. EXPLORE
-Teacher will group students base from their hobby or their interest.
Student will be asked to look around and choose from the posted
hobby on the wall.
Say: Class, now you have chosen, your group, kindly go to your
group, silently.

-Teacher will give instruction for their group activity. Teacher will
ask the student to go construct a timeline of important events in the
menstrual cycle.

3
- Teacher will distribute the materials need during the activity. A task
envelope will be given per group.
- Teacher will inform student that after doing the activity, student will
be ask to present their result wherein each group have different styles
in presenting the activity.

Say: Class, kindly open your task envelope, as a group you are to
arrange the picture and description s of series of events of menstrual
cycle in chronological order. Please be reminded to place a timeline
as to what day such event occur.

- Through question, teacher will ask and remind the standard in

group activity.

Ask:

Say: Base from the procedure of activity, analyze the picture. After
analyzing, write down the name of the endocrine gland and explain
its effect, according to its function. Then answer the following are
the guide questions;

Q15. Which gland of the endocrine and nervous system controls the
other glands in the body?
Q16. How will you differentiate thyroid and parathyroid glands in
terms of location and function?
Q17. If a person’s blood sugar level becomes unstable, what glands
might be involved in the problem?
Q18. How important is the thymus gland in keeping your body free
from diseases?
Q19. What might happen to a person born without a thymus gland?
Q20. How will you explain the sudden boost of energy, increased
strength and extraordinary ability to lift very heavy objects especially
during emergency situations?
Q21. Why is injecting insulin an essential part of the daily regime for
most people with diabetes?
Q22. Why does the menstrual cycle stop during menopause?
Q23. How do oral contraceptives, specifically birth control pills,
prevent pregnancy?
Q24. Breastfeeding releases oxytocin and prolactin, hormones that
relax the mother and make her feel more nurturing toward her baby.
On the other hand, how does the baby benefit from the production of
these hormones in the mother’s body?

D. EXPLAIN
-Teacher will ask to present their output. Let student explain and
discuss their observation and their answers to guide question thru
reporting.

- In case, the time will not be enough for all groups to present the
remaining group will present their presentation thru video

E. ELABORATE
- Teacher will post a table on the board and ask student to fill in the
table with the correct information. Answers are also posted on the
board. (see attachment for clearer view of the table) Answer to the table:
(see attachment for clearer view of the table)

- Students will ask to fill in the table by identifying the endocrine

glands/organ, its description thru its location, structure, and
hormone release and its function.
- The following are the choices;
A. Name of gland/organ
Choices: Hypothalamus, pituitary gland, thymus, adrenal gland,
pancreas
B. Structure
Choices: small cone shape structure connected to the pituitary
gland, small, pea size, a two lobed structure, small triangular
gland, shape like a flat pear
C. Location

6
Choices: at the base of the brain connected to pituitary gland, at
the base of the brain, in front of the heart, top of the kidneys,
between the kidneys
D. Hormone
Choices: Oxytocin, Growth Hormone, Adrenocorticotropic
Hormone (ACTH), Prolactin, Luteinizing Hormone, Follicle
Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Releasing Factors, Thymosin,
Adrenalin, Insulin, Glucagon
E. Functions
Choices: stimulates growth, and controls the functions of
other glands, enables the body to produce certain antibodies, prepares
the body for action, controls the heart rate and breathing in times of
emergency, regulates blood sugar levels, regulates activities of the
body such as temperature, blood pressure and use of water.

F. EXTEND
- Teacher will ask mind pick question which links to other
discipline or in real life situations.
Students Response
Ask: Why do you think the human endocrine system called the - Answer varies
system of checks and balance?
Say: The endocrine system is also known as the “system of checks
and balances” that works to keep the body system healthy. One of the
instances when the endocrine system is working properly is by
sending signals to another gland, which responds by controlling the
chemicals of the first gland.

Ask: Why are the hormones necessary to our well-being?

Say: Because hormones control various body processes. This control - Answer varies
system usually brings about slow changes in the body because
chemical messengers move more slowly than nerve impulses.
