In The Absence of Credible Independent Long-Term Feeding Studies, The Safety of Gmos Is Unknown

My stand about Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) is against it because GMOs have not been tested thoroughly, can have unpredictable outcomes, and may be harmful to human, animal and crop health. GMOs also pose risks to the environment such as creating herbicide-resistant "super weeds" through cross-pollination. Additionally, little is known about the long-term health effects of GMOs on humans and research has shown potential health issues for animals that consume GM feed. There are also concerns that GMOs could transfer antibiotic resistance to humans or contribute to increased cancer risk.

What is your stand about Genetically Modified Organisms. Are you for it or against it?

My stand about Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) is against because they have not
been tested thoroughly, have less predictable outcomes and can be potentially harmful to
human, animal and crop health alike as a result. Genetically modified products contain novel
proteins that could trigger allergic reactions in people who are either allergic to one of the
components of the GMO or in people who are allergic only to the new substance. GMO’s are a
serious risk to the environment. Their seeds travel well beyond fields where they are grown.
Cross-pollination creates herbicide-resistant “super weeds” that threaten other crops and wild
plants. Natural food tastes better and is better for me. We want apples that taste like apples,
not artificially sweetened super apples. And we want the variety of products that come to us
from nature. We also want to feel good about our food. The research found consumers got
more pleasure from eating food they believed to be organic or ethically produced. Little is
understood yet about the health effects of GMOs, but recent studies have shown animals fed
with GM-containing feed can develop health problems. In many parts of the world including
the EU, studies on GM crops can be carried out by the same companies who product them,
casting doubt on the quality and bias of data. This are some of the following things that affect
if we use the GMO:

 Studies have shown that genetically modified corn and soy fed to rats led to a higher risk of
them developing liver and kidney problems. These health risks may not be transferable to
humans, but they illustrate the unpredictable nature of GMOs on living things.

 GMOs are not always tested thoroughly. The shortest GMO testing times are a mere 90
days, which many fear is simply not enough time to ascertain all of the risks.

 Transgenic modification produces organism types which would never occur naturally,
making them highly unpredictable.

 GMOs could affect those with allergies in unpredictable ways.

 Often GMO products are not clearly labelled, meaning people do not have the choice to
decide whether or not they wish to consume GMO products.

 GMO testing often involves performing experiments upon animals, which some people feel
is a breach of animal rights.

In the absence of credible independent long-term feeding studies, the safety of GMOs is
unknown. Because genetically engineering foods is a relatively new practice, little is known
about the long-term effects and safety.
Some researchers believe that eating GMO foods can contribute to the development of cancer.
They argue that because the disease is caused by mutations in DNA, it is dangerous to introduce
new genes into the body. There is concern that genetic modification, which can boost a crop's
resistance to disease or make it more tolerant to herbicides, could affect the ability of people to
defend against illness. There is a small chance that the genes in food can transfer to cells the body
or bacteria in the gut. Some GMO plants contain genes that make them resistant to certain
antibiotics. This resistance could pass on to humans. There is growing concern globally that people
are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics. There is a chance that GMO foods could be
contributing to this crisis. Because genetic modification can make plants resistant to disease and
tolerant of herbicides, the process can increase the amount of food that farmers are able to grow.
This can reduce prices and contribute to food security.Clearly, GM foods are unacceptably risky,
deceptively promoted and obstructing genuine progress. The world will be much better off without
them.
