Working in Computer Lab
In the previous chapter, we learnt about the parts of computer. Now, let us learn how to
start computer.
How to Start Computer

To start a computer, perform following steps:

CAPS LOCK KEY

BACKSPACE KEY

• Backspace key acts like an eraser.

MEMORY UNITS

• Memory is used to store the information.


• Memory capacity is measured in memory units.
• Commonly used memory units are Bit, Byte, Kilobyte, Megabyte, and Gigabyte.
• Information in computer memory is stored in binary digits 0 and 1 (called Bits).
• Bit is amount of memory that can store one binary digit i.e. either 0 or 1.
• Byte is amount of memory that can store one character.

Relationship between various memory units

1 Byte = 8 bits

1 Kilo Byte = 1024 bytes

1 Mega Byte = 1024 Kilo Bytes

1 Giga Byte = 1024 Mega Bytes

In short, we write Kilo Byte as KB, Mega Byte as MB and Giga Byte as GB.

4. To change line style, click outline in shape group. Select a line style.

7. To draw a straight line, press and hold down the Shift key while dragging mouse in

Drawing A Rectangle
To draw a rectangle, perform following steps:
1. Click on Home tab.

Erasing A Drawing
It is possible that while making a drawing, something wrong has been drawn and you want
to erase that. To erase any part of drawing, perform following steps:
1. From Tools group, select Eraser tool.
2. Select size of eraser by clicking on Size button.
3. Move the mouse pointer to drawing area.
4. Click and drag mouse pointer over the drawing area that you want to erase.

Saving Drawing

To make use of made drawing in future, the drawing must be saved. Moreover, it is always
good to save the drawing in between also so that made part is not lost in case of power
failure.
To save a drawing in between or after completion of drawing, perform following steps:
1. Make a drawing in Paint.
2. Click on Paint button fig. A drop down menu is displayed.
3. Click on Save option Fig. in the menu. Save As window is displayed.
4. Type the name of file in File name box.
5. Click on Save button.
