CHAPTER 1
PROBLEM AND ITS SETTINGS
Background of the Study
Our main ingredient is a specific herb, coffee beans. People think
that coffee is only for helping you stay awake and the researchers want to
show other uses of coffee beans, a coffee bean’s function to help make ink,
and doing this can reduce the use of ink cartridges that are disposed 375
million in a year that causes landslides and it takes 100 years for cartridges
to decompose and could be a cause for cancer if not taken proper action
immediately. And ink has been a fundamental part of the evolution of mankind
since the 4th century and was called as “masi” at that time.
That gave us the researchers the idea to investigate and reproduce the said
material that would benefit the progress of mankind rather than taking more
raw materials from our planet that would cause the environment to be
destroyed and since herbs are natural raw materials and wouldn’t cause
destruction if taken out from the ground or the tree then we thought that it is
an experiment to test. If this succeeds, we might be able to at least contribute
a tiny bit on lessening the damage on our ecosystem.
Statement of the Problem
This experiment wants to compare the ink that was bought and the
ink that is going be made using as an alternative ingredient in feather ink.
Specifically, this experiment seeks to answer the following questions:
1. Is there a significance difference between ingredients using butyl urea,
cyclohexanone etc. and using herbs in the production of ink in terms of;
a) Consistency
b) Color
c) Drying rate
2. Are herbs effective and feasible as a raw material in the production of
ink?
Hypothesis
The produced ink will have no significant difference with the effectiveness and
quality of cheap store-bought ink and ink made of coffee beans
Significance of the Study
This study aims to be of assistance to students who wish to save a bit of
money for their school works and projects by producing ink using coffee beans
laying around and also workers more specifically, office workers, who eats up
ink rapidly in their tasks as an office worker and is interested in saving a bit
of money for their daily needs by using some coffee beans that seems
unusable for drinking and make ink. Needless to say, this study also helps the
government agencies touch the heart of people by humility by using a self-
made ink. This also helps reduce landslide by reducing the amount of ink
cartridges.
Scope and Delimitation
The researchers would experiment for at least 2 days. The Researchers will
use ground coffee bean in making ink to reduce the raw materials that are
being taken from the environment and will be done at the house of the
researchers. The researchers will utilize the tools and equipment that will be
available in their home. In doing the said experiment the researchers will need
½ cup ground coffee, 4 cups of water, 1 tsp of vinegar and 1 tsp of salt. In
doing so the researchers will put the coffee and water in a pot and simmer on
low for an hour. Remove from heat and allow to steep overnight. This step
isn’t necessary but the longer it steeps, the darker your ink will be.
Strain the ink through a fine-screened sieve and return to stove.
Simmer the ink on low until it reaches desired consistency and color. Add the
vinegar and salt to lock the color in. You should have about 1 cup of ink when
you’re done. Store in a small mason jar, such as baby food jar.
Definition of Terms
For better understanding of this Investigative Project, the researchers have
presented the definitions of each term specified in this project.
Simmer - a state or temperature just below boiling point.
Raw Materials - the basic material from which a product is made.
Coffee Bean - a seed of the coffee shrub.
Vinegar - a sour-tasting liquid containing acetic acid, obtained by fermenting
dilute alcoholic liquids, typically wine, cider, or beer, and used as a condiment
or for pickling.
Mason Jar - a glass jar with a lid that you screw on, which is used for
preserving food
