ABSTRACT
WATER RESOURCES
Water resource is the most potentially useful resource among all and therefore its usage is also most among
all resources. It is necessary for every living organism to grow and reproduce. And talking about living things
humans cant be left aside and just like every other organism we too require water to grow. India is a country
of huge population and as a result, the usage of water in India is also very high. We can say that it is because of
a large population in India depending on agriculture and the requirement of water is very much because of the
different processes in it. But the usage of water is also much more in densely populated areas mainly in cities
as a large number of people in India live in cities or megacities for many opportunities. The result is that the
water is that much used in megacities that it has started affecting the groundwater level so much that the
conditions are getting worse than ever. There is a high dependency of Indian cities on Groundwater but the
extent and nature of this dependence are in poor condition. Reports say that cities such as Chennai,
Bengaluru, Delhi will run out of groundwater by 2020. This issue can't be ignored as this is the worst water
crisis in the history of India.
With nearly 600 million Indians facing high-to-extreme water stress – where more than 40 percent of the
annually available surface water is used every year – and about 200,000 people dying every year due to
inadequate access to safe water, the situation is likely to worsen as the demand for water will exceed the
supply by 2050, said the ‘Composite Water Management Index’ (CWMI) report .
There is now no more time to think about this big problem because we are very late to even do that but what
we need is solutions. States need to start managing their groundwater and their agriculture water so that it
does not keep getting worse. Attention should be paid to the states’ performance in implementing existing
laws properly against groundwater exploitation. It is always said that’s it is never too late to start so we, being
a responsible citizen, should stop exploiting water. Performance around groundwater augmentation can
significantly improve with the strengthening of groundwater regulations and strict implementation on the
ground. Major steps like the improvement of monitoring network and continuous monitoring of groundwater
level and groundwater quality, strict implementation of rainwater harvesting and continuous operation and
maintenance of the same will also help in manage the groundwater better.
