Summary

• This report details an internship at New Mangalore

Port Trust at Panambur, Mangalore. I did my
training in the Mechanical Division. Basically, I
had my training for 15 days i.e. from August 1 to
15 (two weeks). In the first week, we were taken to
two fire water pump houses and in the second
week, another pump house, mobile crane and reach
stacker.

• It was really a good experience and a wonderful

training. As it included the Fire safety training in
the middle of my internship along with employees,
workers guided by senior fire safety officer who
cooperated with us actively clearing all our doubts

Internship activities
From August 1st to 15th 2019, I did my training at
NMPT’s Mechanical division as an intern along
with six other trainees. First day we were taken to
Fire water pump house, there are three fire water
pump houses. Actually there is a fire protection and
detection system for Jetty no.3 and 4.

Systems Provided:
• Hydrant and Monitors
• Water Curtain System
• Fire Alarm System
• Flame Detection System
• Gas Detection system
• Public Address System

To provide pressurised water for Fire Fighting, there is

a pump house with individual pump sets for each jetty
and common standby. The starting arrangements of
these pumps is automatic and manual. Also these
pumps can be operated manually from Control Room
located away from pump house. All the pumps are

5
vertical type used to provide sea water for firefighting
at high pressure.
Different types of firefighting equipments are provided
on the jetty at strategic locations-
2 Tower Monitors, both are located at 20 meter high
tower. The capacity of each monitor is 6000LPM.
Water- 62 meter high & 102 Meter long throw. Foam-
55 meter high & 90 meter long throw.
1 Ground Monitor at service platform located on 3
meter high tower. The capacity of monitor is 3000LPM.
Water-45 meter high & 72 meter long throw. Foam- 40
meter high & 65 meter long throw.
The monitors are remote operated from control room.
Water Curtain System is provided for service
platform. Each system is provided with the number of
water curtain nozzles in a row, each having capacity of
362 LPM at 7 bar and vertical throw of 20 meters. The
control of these valves are in the control room.

OPERATION:

The firefighting Network connected with the Tower

Monitors, Ground Monitors, Ground Double Hydrants
and Fire Escape Hydrants are always charged with
pressurised seawater by the pumping set provided in the
6
fire pump house and the network system pressure is
maintained by the jockey pump.

WATER CURTAIN SYSTEM:

To protect the equipment on the service platform and

Tower Monitor from the radiation heat due to fire on
the ship when it is berthed. It consists of following 18
nos- Water curtain system nozzle 362LPM at 7 bar with
maximum throw of 20 meters. 3 nos- motorised valve. 1
Lot- Connecting Pipe.

FLAME DETECTION SYSTEM:

They have provided with Flame Detection systems for

detection of level of radiation due to flame. These are
provided on the berth area which will cover the ship,
and on Service Platform to cover Pumps, loading arms
etc. These detectors are connected to the main flame
detection panel which is located in the Control building.

7
GAS DETECTION SYSTEM:

The Gas detection system has been provided to give

warning of the presence of flammable gases or vapour
in air well before they reach explosive concentration.
These are linked to the gas discharge panel located in
the control building detection.

PUBLIC ADDRESS SYSTEM:

A Public address system is provided with industrial

horn type speakers and these speakers are located at
tower monitors, outer breasting dolphins, service
platform, firefighting pump house and control building.
The suitable capacity of amplifier is also provided in
main control building for announcing the addresses.

Once in a week trial will be taken for each of the

pump house to ensure whether machines work perfectly
So that there will be no issues during the scenario of
fire fighting.

9
In the second week
we were taken to
Mobile Crane and
Reach Stacker.
Mobile Crane is a
machine with 12
cylinder engine and
automated coolant
which senses the heat
of the engine and
automatically cools
down the engine.
These cranes have a
maximum weight
carrying capacity of

About 64 tons. It consists of a remote control cabin and

a gear lever cabin. It is easier to carry maximum loads
from place to place using this machine without actually
moving.
REACH STACKER: Then comes the reach
stacker. It is a vehicle consisting of 8 operations like
lifting, dropping etc. which helps to carry the containers
from berth to container shed.
CONCLUSION: Overall this was a very good
experience .we gained lot of knowledge about the
10
machines, engines etc. Hope this would help us in the
future. Wishing to visit again.
