April 2017 Toolkit - Sexual Assault Awareness Month

The month of April has been designated Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) in the United
States. The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and to educate
communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence.

By working together during the month of April, we can highlight sexual violence as a major public
health, human rights and social justice issue and reinforce the need for prevention efforts.

This year's SAAM theme is Engaging New Voices, and the NSVRC's campaign focuses on
bringing crucial voices—those of coaches, parents, faith leaders, and members of Greek life—into
the movement to end sexual violence. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center writes,

"We’re strongest when we raise our voices together, and that’s why we’re
engaging new groups in the movement. These groups can help the next
generation foster attitudes that promote healthy relationships, equality, and
respect. These new voices will have a ripple effect on those that they
teach, guide, and influence."

HOW DO I USE THE TOOLKIT?

Add an announcement about SAAM to your newsletter.
Spread the word online using Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Hang up posters around town or hand out postcards.
Partner with a local church, school, or university to host an event.

This toolkit is meant to spark ideas and assist you in your preparation for SAAM. You are free to
copy and paste any sample posts you wish to use, and anything referencing an online resource
or material can be clicked on, taking you straight to the source. (Hover over images and
text; there's a lot of material!) There are sample social media posts, printable outreach
materials, and resources that are specific to the groups listed above. You can find more tools at
[Link]/saam.
Visit [Link] to find even more tools. Choose the ones that will best serve your
community, and remember our voices are strongest together!

Sample Announcement

The first step in engaging new voices is raising your voice. Get the word out that you
are honoring Sexual Assault Awareness Month by using this Sample Announcement in
a newsletter, listserv, or press release.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and [insert your organization name here]
wants you to know that you can play a role in preventing sexual violence.

Sexual assault, rape, and other forms of abuse are pervasive. In Wisconsin alone,
nearly two million individuals have been impacted by sexual violence. This public
health issue affects people from each county, city, and township and will continue to
exist unless we speak out.

You can make a difference. Here's how:

Be a positive role model. Promote respect, equality, and safety in your community.
Raise your voice. Have age-appropriate conversations with the kids in your life about
consent.
Show your support. Listen, believe, and support survivors in their healing.

If you or someone you know would like support, you can call [insert local helpline] at
[555-5555] or visit [insert local website].

Together, we can raise our voices and prevent sexual violence.
