Graduate Student Council

The Graduate Student Council represents graduate students and facilitates communication between them and the Graduate School and Graduate Council. GRADUATE STUDENT COUNCIL

Statement of Purpose

The purpose of the Graduate Student Council shall be to assure formal avenues of
communication between representatives of the graduate student body and both the Dean of the
Graduate School and the Graduate Council. It shall serve as an advisory council and to facilitate
an interchange of ideas and information between these groups on all matters of mutual interest.

Officers and Procedures

The Graduate Student Council will elect a chair, vice-chair, secretary, and treasurer and establish
a set of operational procedures. Two representatives, presumably the Graduate Student Chair
and Vice-Chair, attend Graduate Council meetings. The Graduate Dean serves as the advisor to
the Graduate Student Council.

Representation

1. Representation on the Graduate Student Council is by division, college, and school (on a
rotating basis with the following representation):

Sciences and Technology 1
The College of Business Administration 1
The School of Community Service 1
The College of Education
Preparation for Academic Teaching 1

2. Representation is on a rotating basis beginning with the initial membership, half of whom
are elected for two years and the other half for a one-year period. The membership
proceeds through the division or school on a rotating basis through the alphabetical
listing of the departments or disciplines within the school or division.

3. Nomination-Election

a. The nomination-election committee is established by the Graduate Student


Council at the first meeting of the spring semester.

b. The nomination-election committee will accept nominations between February 1


and March 1, with administrators, faculty, and graduate students all eligible to
submit nominations. Graduate students may nominate themselves.

c. Between March 1 and March 15, the committee shall interview all nominations
with the purpose of informing them of the activities and goals of the Graduate
Student Council.

d. Between March 16 and March 31, the committee shall conduct the elections for
each of the regular seats, except for the at-large positions, in a manner that will
best promote the well-being of the graduate students.

e. The newly elected regular members shall join the Graduate Student Council on
April 1. The terms of the retiring regular members shall expire on April 30.
