Uncovering the Impact of Computer Literacty

Abstract

Firstly, the study is about knowing what is meant in computer literacy and why it is trained.

This study also determined the positive and negative impact of computer literacy training

among all people of all ages. To give a guide as this study goes further, there are three (3)

questions raised in order to distinguish its importance. Fortunately, what was discovered here

is that in this type of training, there are more number of positive impacts rather than the

negative impact of it to all concerned people. There are also ways in order to apply the

computer literacy training in an appropriate way.

In the contemporary world where we live in, many technological advancements are already

present. In example the mobile phones, smart televisions and most especially the computer,

which can lead to the process of world shrinkage, distance getting shorter and even things

are moving closer. Computer is a an electric device that has the ability to accept data, store

data, process data by following some set instructions to produce an excellent result.

Computer always change, they become lighter, smaller, faster and even more powerful

In connection to this, perhaps computer literacy training may enhance the knowledge and

skills of the students in order to have a better academic performance. It is also a big

contributor in order to use computer and technology efficiently. The concept of this computer
literacy training can educate many students into different aspects. But what threatens here

is that there could be a possibility to have an improper use of this most especially if improper

usage occurred. Meaning, when you have already the knowledge as you underwent into a

computer literacy training, there are instances that you can already use this as a coping

mechanism in this modern society but having a great advantage of this skill comes up with

disadvantages that have negative impacts on some of those basic needs just like in reading

and writing.

Furthermore, these days being computer literate is more important than it ever has been

in the last few years that computers have been around. Almost everything is becoming

computer reliant and there are several businesses that have embraced technology. Computer

literacy isn’t something that you can easily escape, and honestly you shouldn’t try to. Humans

are all about adapting and computers are just one more thing we all have to learn to adapt to

through this computer literacy training.

Objectives of the Research

1. To determine what is really meant by computer literacy that needs a further training.

2. To identify the positive impacts of training about Computer Literacy.

3. To distinguish the negative impact of training about Computer Literacy.

Research Methodology

The type of research used was a descriptive one. Therefore, the data was gathered through

the use of available reading materials. In example is books, social media and academic

websites. Moreover, some perceptions of students are also collected and heard.
II. Body

[Link] is really meant by computer literacy which also needs training?

In our modern world, computers can make the world undergo into a process of world

shrinkage and make things move closer. According to an online website of Harvard

University(2019), Computers provide the wide range of education and executive software.

Information technology has achieved a great success. Use of computers is widely spread. It is

used for storing, analyzing, and distributing information. It has created a great revolution. It

has proved a miraculous development in almost every field. These days, computers are used

almost everywhere. Computers are widely used in satellites, aircrafts, space crafts, banks,

airline offices, government offices, business establishments, making reservations in the large

organizations, schools, hospitals, railway stations, airports, searching the Internet for

information and many other corporations. With the introduction of computers, the

development in India seems to be gaining rapid momentum. It is becoming an inseparable

part of development.

It has also been said that computer literacy training is essential for anyone. For the reason

that computer offers the opportunity for lot of creativity and scope for innovations. The

computerization has given benefits by making our life more livable. With the advancement of

technology, the demand of computer literates is increasing day by day. Computer Literacy is

becoming an essential skill these days. Employers want their workers to have basic computer

skills as the companies are becoming more dependent on computers. A lot of companies try

to use computers to help run their companies faster and cheaper. So, it is becoming necessary

to gain knowledge and learn computers and need to be computer literate. Computer Literacy

can be defined as the knowledge and ability to use computers and technology efficiently.
Computer Literacy is a good option to be trained. A person must learn computer

fundamentals and computer basics to cope with the advancement in technology. There are

various computer training centers in various parts of our country which helps a person to

learn and understand the basics of the computer. These days, computers are also a part of

education. Computers are used in schools for many applications. Computer is also one of the

subjects taught in the schools to the students which is a good thing so that they remain in

touch with the latest computer hardware and software information. Many of the schools

provide separate computer labs to the students to help them through the practical as they

gain more knowledge and confidence to use it. It is also very much necessary keeping your

computer skills up to date so as to be in a lifelong process of computers since the technology

is constantly evolving. Computers are taking place of the typewriters because of their ability

to duplicate and retain information and ease of editing. Computers are also replacing pens

and papers too. Various computer literacy programs are also run in different areas of the

country. Computer training is becoming a kind of neccessity. In many of the places the

computer basics include the learning of Computer Microsoft word-processing, spreadsheets,

databases, networking and the internet. These days, online learning is also given. So,in today’s

modern age, computerization is gaining momentum and computer literacy is a good option

to grasp a good job in different organizations.

For Students:

Based on an open article of UK essays(2018), Computer Literacy Training empowers

students to engage in the learning process and give them an interest in their personal

education. By integrating ICT into the classroom, students have the ability to learn more
effectively, collaborate with each other, and explore the world around them. Anytime,

anywhere access to internet-based tools is necessary to encourage learning inside the

classroom and beyond. For example, students who are always online or having facebook, they

will always explore something and share with their friends. It unknowingly makes them more

collaborate with each other, However, ICT provided e-learning to the learners. It is a flexible

learning to those who are busy in their own things. For example, they have some people

working since they are young. They work because of the family financial. Indeed, they are the

people who want to work and study at the same time. E-learning is a way for them to study

at home. It is useful and benefit for them. Other than that, hints and tips are the best practice

for them to share their knowledge and opinion if they have their own ideas.

Today, ICT brings many benefits to the younger generation especially for students. For

example, some of the students who work part-time also can find some time to do their College

work. In addition, most of the time students like to use word processing from the computer

itself. It is also quick and easy to edit their work and improve their presentation by using ICT.

For example, we always use computer as the resources to get our work done in a time.

Similarly like now, I using Microsoft Word to do my individual assignment. Besides, the

Worldwide Web is the only way to have quick and easy access to information on any topic.

ICT gives easy access to a world of knowledge and ICT which including quick guide is to learn

‘the basic’ of how to use the functions or applications. For example, printer is the one machine

that will always show us the quick guide before we press start.

Referring to the information from the internet that I know with a range of ICT equipment,

it improved the behavior management through better tracking of students. It helps not only

to gain in understanding but also analytical skills which include improvements in reading
comprehension as well as increase knowledge. For example, we have to read and understand

the essay from the web-sites before we choose the article. It improves our understanding by

reading. Moreover, ICT unknowingly help students improve in their development of writing

skills such as spelling, punctuation, editing and grammar. Students can become more fluent

and original in their work. For instance, when we always read the article from the internet,

we will get influence by the way the writer writes on the article.

For More Matured Individuals:

As stated by Leonard (2019), there are many positive impacts of the training to become

computer literate in the 21st century. Here are just some of them:

1. More job opportunities

Entering the workforce and getting a job for many people once involved finding work in

fields like construction and manufacturing. While these industries haven’t disappeared

entirely, it isn’t nearly as easy to find work in them. For many people, it’s easier to find an

office job that involves the use of a computer. Naturally, being able to use a computer will

put you at a distinct advantage when you apply for these kinds of positions.

2. Better communication

A significant part of communication in the 21st century is done remotely over computer

networks. Email is more convenient than traditional mail in many ways, and people who might

otherwise never be able to speak to each other regularly exchange messages even though

they may be on opposite sides of the world. Whether you are keeping in touch with old friends
or emailing your resume to employers, communication via the Internet is vital in the modern

age.

3. New media

For many young people, computers are replacing television as the go-to source of

entertainment. Teenagers are arguably more likely to watch videos on YouTube than flip

through TV channels, and services such as Netflix allow people to watch TV shows and movies

any time they want as long as they have a reliable Internet connection. In many ways,

computers and the Internet represents the future of entertainment and those who don’t take

the time to become computer literate may be left behind.

4. Having an up-to-date news source.

Although there are still plenty of people who read those, newspapers are quickly becoming

relics of the past. People are now choosing to read the news online, and these sites can be

updated instantly as stories develop. Being computer literate enough to access these sites

means being able to better keep up with current events.

5. Being prepared for future

Computer technology is advancing faster than ever before, and it’s very easy to be left

behind if you don’t take the time to become at least semi-literate when it comes to

computers. The communication technology you use now will most likely be very different

from what you will be using in five years, but it will still provide you with a solid foundation of

computer literacy that will serve you for years to come.

[Link] Training Costs

As an employer, you need to consider the costs of onboarding an employee, such as those

associated with the time and resources to train employees on required computer programs,

processes and resources. If a prospect is already well-versed in the necessary programs for

the job, the costs to train new hires drops, as well.

Of course, there may be certain proprietary programs that are company-specific. Although

you might not be able to avoid training employees on these programs, the training becomes

much more effective if that employee has a solid background in computer programs, since

many programs have similarly functioning platforms. When a new hire is learning everything

from the most basic skills to proprietary software, it takes longer to learn and can become

frustrating for employees and employers alike.

[Link] Employees Start Strong

Usually, you hire someone to fill a need. Ideally, the sooner than gap is filled, the faster

your company or department can get back on track. When an employee comes in ready with

the required computer literacy skills, she can sit down and get to work. The time required to

ramp up and get started is dramatically reduced.

For example, assume you lost your internal bookkeeper, who uses Xero software for Mac.

Chances are that you are hiring an experienced bookkeeper, but if that person has only

worked solely on Quickbooks for Windows, she will require additional time to learn the new

program, which might be on an operating system that's new to her. If a candidate who has

the same level of bookkeeping experience walked through the door, and also has experience
on Xero, the bookkeeping functions in your office would be up and running faster with the

candidate who has Xero experience than with the candidate who has Quickbooks experience.

8. Productivity and Efficiency

Employees that are computer literate are generally more efficient workers, thus are more

productive. There are times a person might need to know a trick he learned years ago; he

might not need that trick every day but when he does it can save a lot of headaches and

frustration. For example, most executive assistants are well-versed in most office suite

programs such as Microsoft Office. This means that he knows more than the basics of Word,

Excel and PowerPoint.

Assume you have been invited to speak to a local chamber of commerce about your

company, and you ask your assistant to put together a PowerPoint presentation with text that

slides in, while you are speaking. Being well-versed in software, he can probably figure out

the process but being well-versed in the program itself might save him two to three hours of

trial-and-error fiddling around, searching online for help or relying on help from colleagues or

friends.

[Link] are the negative impacts of training Computer Literacy?

We may see the goodness when we are trained to be a computer literate but the too much

knowledge and exposure is also bad. Provided that someone is already a well-trained and

knowledgeable enough in computers but then this leads to their addiction as well. According

to Grabianowski (2019), computer addiction can have a variety of negative effects on a

person. The most immediate are social. The user withdraws from friends and family as he

spends more and more time on the computer. Relationships begin to wither as the user stops
attending social gatherings, skips meetings with friends and avoids family members to get

more computer time. Even when they do interact with their friends, users may become

irritable when away from the computer, causing further social harm.

Eventually, excessive computer use because of trainings can take an emotional toll. The

user gradually withdraws into an artificial world. Constant computer gaming can cause

someone to place more emotional value on events within the game than things happening in

their real lives. Excessive viewing of Internet pornography can warp a person's ideas

about sexuality. Someone whose primary friends are screen names in a chat room may have

difficulty with face-to-face interpersonal communication.

Over the long term, computer addiction can cause physical damage. Using

a mouse and keyboard for many hours every day can lead to repetitive stress injuries. Back

problems are common among people who spent a lot of time sitting at computer desks. Late-

night computer sessions cut into much-needed sleep time. Long-term sleep deprivation

causes drowsiness, difficulty concentrating, and depression of the immune system. Someone

who spends hours at a computer is obviously not getting any meaningful exercise, so

computer addiction can indirectly lead to poor overall physical condition and even obesity.

Eventually, the consequences of computer addiction will ripple through the user's life.

Late-night use or use at work will affect job performance, which could lead to job loss. As

the addiction takes its toll on family members, it can even lead to failed marriages.

Implementing on-going training will allow customers to become more knowledgeable on

relevant software and computer skills. Informed customers have a much better
understanding when they comprehend the general synopsis of an issue. When customers

develop a broad knowledge of what’s going on and begin to recognize how computers

function, their overall method to problem-solving will be a more informed approach.

Understanding basic computer terminology or computer talk has many advantages for all

parties involved.

As of today, we may be blinded by it’s impact. But then, the proper usage relies on us. We

are the drivers of our own actions. So being trained as computer literate, it is not just about

the knowledge that it endows but also with the life teachings in life that it is learned like

through moderation.
