1. a) Similes are when two objects are compared against each other using ‘like’ or ‘as’. An
example of a simile is on line 4-5. These lines are an example of a simile because it uses word
‘as’ to differentiate and compare to atmosphere and a vacuum.
b) Metaphors are when a word or phrase is applied to an action that couldn’t happen. An
example of a metaphor in a story is on line 150. This is a metaphor because I have two objects that
cause a rhetorical effect that shows similarities between the two.
2. Theme is the moral of the story that the author tries to teach, There are two possible themes for
“Dark they were, and golden eyed”. One is ‘where you are can change you are’. Evidence for this
can be found on line 196-198. When they were on Mars they changed into martians. Another
theme for the story is “people can change without even noticing” that is shown in lines 464-467.
The main character changed into martians without knowing.

4) I am in the oblivion...Everything is just flat land, and scorching hot. I am desperately looking for
water, of course, because my life depends on it. Without water I won't able to resist walking
through the deserted island..There are no trees at all, the ones who are still alive are partially
burned from the cruel heat of the gigantic sun. I am feeling powerless and incapable of
walking..Wait - what's that? It's a - a lake! I ran so fast to get as quick as possible to the lake and
there was I..With no energy left in my body, I drank the water and wanted for more despite how
unclean the water is. I took some bottles with me and filled it with water. Now, I was ready to go
and search for somebody . Oh no...I've just heard something - it's - it's coming from a tiger! I need
to run..and quick! The tiger is just behind me, fixing me with his huge eyes preparing to jump and
get me..but I will keep running till I get somewhere safe! A house! I should knock at the door
immediately! Oh no - nobody is home or maybe even worse is abandoned! What do I do now?
Climb in a tree! I should use my living in the wild skills to do it...never look down from somewhere
high..never look down...I should stop repeating this to myself and just climb the tree! I did...finally
and the view from here is phenomenal! What am I seeing...a boat! My life is now saved! Now I
need to climb down and hopefully the tiger is gone, I will get to the boat and get back home! Now,
let's do it without to much hesitation! After 15 minutes, I found the boat and I asked the people on it
politely to get home. Of course, I told my location specifically but safely and I've got home..
