University of
Southampton
guide to research
This guide has been designed with the help of
Academic Liaison Librarians at the University of
Southampton. It is not intended to be a comprehensive
resource for researchers; rather it is meant to serve as a
place to start on a wide range of research topics.
The resources highlighted within this guide are reliable academic sources, but represent only
a fraction of the rich variety of information available. We recommend you make full use of the
resources highlighted here, but also encourage researchers to seek out alternative sources of
evidence to substantiate their thesis.

1. User guide
The resources provided here can be divided into two clear categories – those which are freely available online, and
those which require the researcher to be an on-campus guest of the University of Southampton Hartley Library.

1.1 Freely available online resources

In this section you are asked to reflect upon your attitude towards communicating orally in formal academic
settings. Which of the following statements are true for you?

1.2 Visiting the University of Southampton’s libraries

As a truly comprehensive university, delivering over 60 different degree programmes, the University of
Southampton has a number of campuses with their own libraries. The main library of the University of Southampton
is the Hartley Library, located on the Highfield campus. This keeps copies of texts for almost all subjects covered by
the University. Details of all of the libraries, including opening hours and directions can be found here:
www.soton.ac.uk/library/about/sites.html
There are two ways you can visit the libraries – independently or as part of a pre-arranged trip via the Learn with US
programme (see www.learnwithus.southampton.ac.uk for details on this).

1.3 Independent visits

Any member of the public is welcome to visit the University of Southampton’s libraries for reference purposes. It is
advisable for you to email or phone in advance to ensure your visit does not clash with busy examination periods,
visit days, etc.
On the day of your visit you will need to bring photo ID (e.g. passport, driving licence) and to sign in at the reception
desk. Check the library website for opening hours before you visit: www.southampton.ac.uk/library/index.shtml
As an independent guest you will be able to:
• Use the WebCat catalogue system to find books, printed journals and other resources
• Create a guest account which will give you access to the photocopying facilities*
As an independent guest you will not be able to:
• Access the University’s subscribed online resources or journals highlighted in this Guide, as you will not have a
login code for the computer network
• Use the computer printers
• Borrow books or other resources
Follow this link for guidance on how to create a guest account, or simply ask a member of staff on the library
reception desk for a handout copy: www.southampton.ac.uk/isolutions/essentials/public/
newprinting/guests.html

1.4 Visits as part of the Learn with US programme

If students are visiting the Hartley Library as part of a prearranged visit through the Learn with US programme, and
will be working alongside staff from the programme, they should still bring photo ID with them for the purpose of
signing in. Learn with US groups will also be provided with login codes for the University’s online network, which
will give them access to a wide range of additional resources from academic journals to databases.
Students visiting as part of the Learn with US programme will be able to:
• Use the WebCat catalogue system to find books and printed journals
• Login to the University of Southampton network to access the subscribed online resources highlighted in this
Guide (e.g. Journals, Databases and eBooks)
• Use the computer printers*

University of Southampton | Learn, discover, develop & create. University of Southampton guide to research 4
• Use the photocopiers*
Students visiting as part of the Learn with US programme will not be able to:
• Borrow books or other resources

1.5 IMPORTANT – COPYRIGHT LAW

It is visitors’ responsibility to ensure that they stay within copyright law when printing or photocopying resources.
If students are visiting with teaching staff as part of the Learn with US programme, it is the responsibility of the
students themselves and their teacher(s) to ensure they stick within the copyright laws. Failure to do so could
endanger the University’s subscriptions, and could lead to the reneging of the offer of research visits for schools and
colleges.

Copyright Law
For each student:
• Journals – you can only copy or download one article from any one issue
• Published work – you are only entitled to photocopy one full chapter, or extracts totalling no more than 5%
of the book
• You may only make single copies of any resource
• Any digital copies must not be placed on a network
Please note breaching copyright law is a legal offence.

1.6 University of Southampton on-campus resources

WebCat and Classmarks
As guests of the Hartley Library, visitors will be able to use the WebCat system to find academic books on their
specific subjects. The classmarks provided in this guide give a snapshot of some of the topics available within the
different subject areas, as well as indicating their physical location within the library. It should be noted that there
are many more topics available, and the classmarks provided are just to give general guidance.

Journals
Journals are a good source of more recent information, as well as serving as archives of past research. They are
often published monthly, and serve as a forum for researchers to publish their latest findings. Most journals are
subscription only, but visiting the Hartley Library as part of the Learn with US programme will enable you to gain
access to electronic copies of them. TDNet is the University of Southampton’s journal catalogue and will enable
you to search through all of the journals to which the University subscribes. JSTOR is another important catalogue
of journals from all subject disciplines, which can be accessed once logged onto the University network. See the
academic skills guide Making the case for advice on effective search strategies.

Databases
Databases are huge online repositories of information. Some of these are freely available, but most will require you to
be logged in as a guest of the University. Links to these are highlighted in this guide. Again, reading the information
provided in the academic skills guide Making the case will help you search effectively through the enormous amount
of information stored within these databases.

* In order to use the computer printers and photocopiers, visitors need to pay to credit their account. This can be done using coins, bank
notes, debit or credit cards in the money loaders spread throughout the library. Either ask library staff for help with this, or follow this
link for guidance on the procedure: www.southampton.ac.uk/library/index.shtml

University of Southampton | Learn, discover, develop & create. University of Southampton guide to research 5
E-Books
These are either digitised copies of books used for teaching, or books produced specifically for use online. The
Hartley Library has a huge collection of digitised books which you can search for and read online rather than having
to find them on the shelves.

1.7 Using this guide for multidisciplinary research

As a final word of guidance, we would like to stress the multidisciplinary nature of research, and how this guide
fits in with that approach. For ease of use, we have arranged the references by A-level subject title. However, as a
researcher you should not feel limited to looking at the resources highlighted under the subject you are researching.
Evidence from other subjects and disciplines can be used to great effect to broaden your argument, offer strong
evidence, and provide your research with an original angle.
For example, while you may be researching a topic in a specific discipline, for instance History, it does not mean that
you cannot use evidence from other disciplines to support your case.
If you were examining a topic on the history of terrorism, you could use the Ipsos MORI website highlighted on
the Government and Politics page to research how public opinion towards the threat of terrorism has changed
over time.
Alternatively, you may decide to come at your argument from a legal angle, exploring how the law has adapted to
reflect changed perceptions to the threat of terrorism over time. In this case, you could make use of resources
highlighted by the disciplines of Law and Criminology, such as the National Institute of Justice website, which
provides a wide variety of papers on the legal response to terrorist threats.
A more unusual but equally valid angle may be to look at some of the journals highlighted on the Engineering pages
to examine how civil engineering has evolved to meet the threats of attacks upon buildings, and what is being done to
bomb-proof modern structures.
Ultimately, there are no set rules on what sources you use to conduct your research, as long as they are academically
sound, reliable and you present a balanced case. Keep an open mind, and think laterally about where you can find
your evidence.

2. What is research?
Research is about seeking explanations and answers for the way things work in the world. It underlies the
development of society whether that is through new technology, medicine, communication or understanding the
relationship between nations and cultures.
Research allows you to pursue your interests, to learn something new and in depth, to sharpen your problem-solving
skills and to challenge yourself in new ways. It presents an opportunity to express your own opinion and views on
a topic that interests you, but also to investigate how your subject relates to and impacts upon a variety of arenas. It
may lead you to think differently or discover new insights, or change your views or those of other people.
Research is also very personal and highly creative. You will have your own style which you can develop, and you
are in charge of the topic, the material you discuss and the view you want to present on it. Researchers often feel a
huge sense of achievement at putting together the results of their work, finding unexpected information or results,
uncovering a new angle on a topic or making a new discovery.
Undertaking a research project will also provide you with a number of important transferable skills, such as
analytical and writing skills and time management, which will enable you to be successful both at university and in
the workplace.

University of Southampton | Learn, discover, develop & create. University of Southampton guide to research 6
There are some key points to bear in mind when beginning a research project:
• Planning is an essential part of the process as this will allow you to search out your material, and structure it in a
coherent and logical way.
• It is important that you decide on your argument or position before you begin to write-up, as the argument or
hypothesis is the basis of the outcome of your research and should provide the link between all the materials
you discuss.
• You must back up your argument or position with sound and relevant supporting evidence from a variety of
sources, just as a lawyer in a trial must make their case.
• In order to make a convincing case, it is essential that you indicate clearly where you find your material through
proper referencing.
You may like to look at the Learn with US academic skills guides, which will offer you advice on researching,
planning and writing about your chosen topic, and gives you tips on how to make your research and writing an
effective process.
The University of Southampton Guide to Research provides a gateway to resources, listed by academic subject. It will
provide you with links to sound academic sources for you to use as the basis of your research. This will enable you to
start your first major research project with confidence in the material you are examining.
Research can be immensely rewarding and satisfying and by undertaking your own project, you will open yourself to
a host of new opportunities to learn, discover, develop and create.

3. Extended project resources by subject

The following pages give a selection of resources, both freely available and those which require a visit to the
University of Southampton Hartley Library to access. For ease of reference, we have arranged these subjects based
around A-level disciplines. These do not necessarily reflect the names of the related degree programmes at the
University of Southampton.

Finding Materials in the University of Southampton Libraries

The main collection of DVDs and videos for Film Studies is in the Avenue Library, where there are facilities to watch
the movies in the library. (You can read all about the Avenue Library at http://www.soton.ac.uk/library/about/
al/index.html.) There is also a large collection of videos and DVDs at Winchester School of Art library – though 10
miles away, this is part of the same library system.
Though it contains most of the film, Avenue library is an undergraduate Reserve Collection which contains
comparatively few books. It is the Hartley Library which houses the main collection of Film literature at the
University of Southampton.
To find books, DVDs, or videos look in WebCat: this lists all items in Southampton University Libraries and tells you
where they can be found. Using Advanced Searches on WebCat you can restrict your search to ‘DVD disk’ or ‘video’
under Medium.
To find books on the shelves, you need to know the library and the classmark. If WebCat says the books are in the
Hartley Library, you can use the touch screen on Level 3 to find where the books are.
Browse the shelves or use the ‘nearby items on shelf’ link in WebCat to find other titles on the same subject.

Some useful classmarks

The main classmark for Film Studies at Hartley Library and the Avenue Library is PN 3290 onwards. At
Winchester School of Art library it is a number 791 onwards.

3.20 Law

Freely available internet resources

The following is a selection of web sources which are both freely available and of a quality appropriate for your
research. There are many more, as you will discover if you surf the net using Google. You must be aware that not all
websites are reliable and many, such as Wikipedia, should not be used in your studies.
For advice on how to search the internet effectively, and discover which websites are worth using, have a look at
Internet for Law. www.vts.intute.ac.uk/he/tutorial/lawyers

Legal Primary Sources

Any study of law will involve looking at legislation and law reports, e.g. Acts of Parliament and reports of cases
heard before the higher courts, including the appeal courts. Primary sources for EU law could additionally include
directives and treaties. Much of this material is now freely available online (see below for best links) but the free
online services will not always be up to date. If you do go on to study law at university you will be encouraged to use
subscription services which will provide updated law.

Cardiff Index to Legal Abbreviations

This is the quickest and easiest way to find the full titles for abbreviations used in the legal literature around the
world.
www.legalabbrevs.cardiff.ac.uk/

BAILII: British and Irish Legal Information Institute

This provides access to the most comprehensive set of British and Irish primary legal materials that are available for
free and in one place on the internet. Content includes both primary and secondary legislation, case law including
tribunal cases, and law reform documents. Cases from both the European Court of Justice and the European Court
of Human Rights are also included.
www.bailii.org

University of Southampton | Learn, discover, develop & create. University of Southampton guide to research 58
Parliament
The United Kingdom Parliament website has information about parliamentary business and the full text of bills
passing through parliament, Select Committee reports, Parliamentary Debates etc. There are useful ‘factsheets’
explaining parliamentary procedure, and research publications on topics of interest.
www.parliament.uk/
There is similar content on other web pages for the Scottish Parliament, and the Northern Ireland and Welsh
Assemblies.

Home Office
The Home Office is the lead government department for immigration and passports, drugs policy, counter-terrorism
and police. Their website highlights current issues and is organised by themes, e.g. anti-social behaviour.
www.homeoffice.gov.uk/
There is also an excellent Research and Statistics section.
www.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/

Ministry of Justice
The Ministry of Justice was formed in 2007, taking over some of the work previously under the Home Office. Its work
spans criminal, civil and family justice, democracy, rights and the constitution, i.e. it is responsible for the justice
system – the courts, prison and probation services.
www.justice.gov.uk/
As with the Home Office, some of the more detailed publications can be found under ‘research’ and ‘statistics’.
www.justice.gov.uk/publications/research.htm
www.justice.gov.uk/publications/statistics.htm

Law Commission
The Law Commission is the statutory independent body created to keep the law under review and to recommend
reform where needed. The Law Commission’s own web pages house their reports from 1996 onwards. Most good law
libraries, including ours, will stock their earlier reports in paper. BAILII (see above) is currently digitising the older
reports, so check there first if you need an older one.
www.lawcom.gov.uk/

European Union
There are two main sites to use if you are looking for anything from the EU. Europa is the ‘Gateway to the European
Union’ and as such is quite immense. If you are looking for a particular theme or subject, the easiest approach is to
browse via the ‘Activities’ tab. Alternatively, either use Europa’s own search engine, or you may prefer to use Google
Advanced Search and limit your search by the domain europa.eu.
http://europa.eu/
If you want the law of the EU, its legislation and its case law, its treaties, directives, regulations and/or the full text
of the ‘OJ’ – the Official Journal of the European Union – begin your search with EUR-Lex, which is the official way to
access to European law online.

International and Comparative Law
Most countries have some legal and/or governmental material on the web, but Worldlii: the World Legal
Information Institute provides an excellent starting point.
www.worldlii.org/
There are themes, e.g. Treaties, Law Reform, but most useful is the list of countries, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe.
Most will include links to legislation and courts, and guides to the legal systems of those countries.
www.worldlii.org/countries.html
Not sure where to start with your international or comparative law research?
Both LLRX and GlobaLex have useful guides on counties and on themes, e.g. A basic guide to international
environmental legal research, or Researching Australian law.

Subject gateways
To find other freely available internet resources try Subject gateways. These provide links, and reviews of sites which
are suitable for academic research. For example:

Intute: Law
This acts as a gateway to quality-assessed sites of interest. Each site listed has been selected and reviewed by a Law
specialist. For each resource chosen there is a brief description along with any other useful information, e.g. any
restrictions on use, if you need to register etc. You don’t need to login to Intute: Law, but if you register you will
receive e-mail updates of new additions.
