The current change in diet has occurred a lot due to the popular culture influence. Its focus is
changing from fast food to a healthy lifestyle including whole foods, weight loss pills, herbal
dietary supplements, and spa and sports clubs. This change is linked to popular culture people
constantly trying to lose weight and become as good-looking as the men and women idealized
by the pop culture.
Trends in food consumption are proportional to the trends of popular culture. It mainly
influences eating as a process and food as it supplies the eating pattern and type of food. Being
an active, successful, and physically fit person is the most popular trend going on these days.
As people spend a little amount of time in their houses, it decreases their opportunities to get
proper nutrition and therefore they face the necessity to substitute their food with the dietary
supplement. It forces the population to consume low-fat products and to keep the track of
calories consumed. The problem is that these dietary supplements do not substitute the vitamins
required by the human organism. Nowadays, people avoid solving the problem of excessive
activity and lack of fresh food with the help of fast-food restaurants. As per current trends of
food, the fact is that people have started avoiding fast-food consumption and are oriented
towards natural foods.
To be healthy and fit “consume natural foods” is what popular culture gives as a solution. These
natural foods have all the necessary elements in it and save the people from ingredients such
as fat, salt or sugar. Like fat, salt and sugar are the main causes of obesity and excessive weight,
the whole foods prevent the body from unhealthy changes. Nowadays the market is filled with
healthy foods and now popular culture is solving the problem of fast-food consumption which
it has created earlier.
Mass media mainly focuses on two factors:
1. Losing weight and diet
Many people struggle to lose some weight and look at what popular culture offers i.e. slim
healthy attractive people. This results in a strong guilt complex because of being corpulent and
stress in the realization of the necessity to lose it. Why people try to lose their weight? It
primarily happens because the pop culture sets the pattern of taking overweight people as an
“unpopular” phenomenon. It is common knowledge that popular culture controls its audience.
Years ago it provoked the fast-food boom. Presently, the pop culture tries to control it through
the addition of a great variety of diets. Correspondingly, the Mass Media is focused on the diet
and all the necessary equipment for exercising. In many advertisements and movies, pop divas
introduce their diet plans which introduces hope in the people to follow them and become as
fit and good-looking as they are. As Mass Media is the reflection of the values of popular
culture it provides people with a solution for losing weight.
2. Taking supplements to be healthy and full of energy
Like in most of the advertisements, we find a celebrity doing a lot of hard work, spending a lot
of time in the gym, along with a strict daily routine but in the end, what they focus on is the
necessity of taking supplements. For example M.S. Dhoni in the advertisement of ‘Boost’, say
“Boost is the secret of my energy”.
