The Quadricentennial Park was established at the site of the former Colayco Park. A few parking
spaces were also located here before. It is 10,000 square meters in area and has two sections
which are the Quadricentennial Fountain and an open area surrounding the Quattromondial.
The design was based on a New Colayco Park design contest won by Anton Mercado, a
second-year Architecture student at the time (Manalad, 2008). The final design was done by a
team from the College of Architecture, having architect Jonathan Manalad as the coordinator.
IMAGES
The sculpture, Quattromondial, portrays four figures that represent the university’s excellence
throughout the four centuries in its stakeholders: 2 students – a male to symbolize excellence
and a female to symbolize tradition, a teacher representing erudtion, and a Dominican friar
signifying spirituality. The globe in the sculpture conveys the positive and negative aspects of
globalization such as environmental degradation and cultural divisions (Orlina, 2011). The
Quadricentennial fountain and the said sculpture both serves as trademarks of the 400th
year of the university. However, people use this park for different purposes, such as for
relaxation and studying. Its meaning to people varies depending mostly on how they use it.
