EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Laundry process is one of the basic duties that we should have done almost every day. However,
due to time constraint, lots of people are unable to do their laundry causing the clothes to pile up
in the basket. Sometimes, the laundry process could not be completed due to heavy rain that
preventing us from drying the clothes under the sunlight. Therefore, the opening of laundry bar
and dobby business do helps us to smoothen our daily duties. People are capable to complete the
laundry process from washing the clothes until drying it in a short of time. A lot of laundry
machines and facilities had been provided in the laundry bar and dobby in order to satisfy human
needs and wants such as by providing multiple size of machines, Wifi, toilet, vending machine and
more.

In this case study, we had done some research and discover for more information and knowledge
regarding to laundry business in the area of Bandar Baru Seri Alam. We had chosen a laundry bar
called Spins Suds-coin Operated Laundry which is located not far from Universiti Teknologi Mara
Pasir Gudang. The reasons on why we chose the business store are due to business strategy,
marketing strategy, operational strategy, and their financial achievements. Besides, an interview
session has been held with the manager of the laundry bar. He shared a lot of important strategies
that been done on order to stabilize the operation of the laundry bar

An analysis had been made towards Spins Suds-coin Operated Laundry regarding its strength,
weakness, opportunity and threat. Through the observation and analysis, there are a few
recommendations and improvements need to be done in order to keep the laundry bar thriving
upwards on top of the chart especially among the competitors.
INTRODUCTION

Nowadays, various productions and services have been impressively thrived along with the
modernization. In every sectors and industries, countless developments have been done in order to
improve the youth and economy growth. These developments causing a huge impact and
transformation not only on modern technology but also on producing many successful
businessman and entrepreneur. It has been proved that both businessmen and entrepreneurs are the
major contributor that successfully played their parts not only in keeping up with the world’s
economy growth, but also in improving human’s life. Even though both businessmen and
entrepreneurs are classified in economy major, we should know and understand that businessmen
and entrepreneurs are slightly different. This is because entrepreneurs are known for their purpose
that focusing on creating and producing something that could help people in improving their life
while businessmen are focusing on selling things to gain profit.

In order to learn and understand more about business and entrepreneurship, a case study has been
conducted. Tons of information regarding to business and entrepreneurship has been collected
from many sources. Most of the information was received through an interview session that had
been arranged with an entrepreneur. Throughout the interview session, we have learnt a lot of
things regarding to business and entrepreneurship. The interview session does really help in
exposing us to the real journey for a businessman and entrepreneur.

From the interview session, we have learnt that there are a lot of things that need to be focused on
including business strategy, marketing strategy, financial, operational strategy and its problems.
Everything should be planned and managed meticulously so that the business will be operating
smoothly especially when there are threats from the competitor.
1.0 COMPANY INFORMATION

1.1 Business Background

1.1.1 Business Details

Spins Suds-coin Operated Laundry was founded by Encik Shafie Bin Jamaluddin and has
been operated for three years since 2016. The Spins Suds handled by two persons who are
siblings. The shop has three organization layers where the first layer consists of the General
Manager, who is Encik Shafie himself while the second layer is the Supervisor, Encik
Jamaluddin and the last layer is the three workers who handled maintenance, cleaning and
services. However, the business is handled closely by Encik Hanafi bin Jamaluddin and his
wife as the Encik Shafie handled the business from afar.

Before they opened the laundry bar, they took a course related to dobby business. As they
finished the course, they work together and build up the business. Spins Suds-coin
Operated Laundry is their very first branch and business. Spins Suds opened at Jalan
Lembah as there were no other laundry bar operated in the area. Therefore, Encik Shafie
has been decided to open the laundry bar so that, they can help to provide laundry service
for the community. This made the Spins Suds as the first laundry bar opened around the
area of Bandar Baru Seri Alam. Moreover, they are able to achieved their objectives for
opening the laundry bar as they helps the community ease their daily and weekly basis.
1.1.2 Nature of Business

Spins Suds-coin Operated Laundry offers a service that provides laundry process. The
business will be able to help the community ease their daily and weekly basis. This is
because home-laundry is quite troublesome as we need to spend more time on drying the
clothes. Despite of doing the laundry at home, it will be easier for the customers to wash
and dry their clothes in a short of time as the washing machine and dryer are provided.
Besides, the machines provided offer to wash and dry the clothes by using multiple
machines with different weight specification such as 11 kg washing machine, 14kg
washing and dryer. Customers will able to choose those type of machines depending on
their clothes’ weight which helps the machine from having breakdown and downtime due
to excessive weight of clothes being wash.

1.1.3 Industry Profile

There are many reasons of starting the business. One of the objectives for starting the
business is to improve and ease communities’ daily and weekly basis as they do not have
to spend a lot of time to wash and dry the clothes especially during heavy rain. This is
because heavy rain will prevent us from drying the clothes as there are no sunlight present.
Next, the business offers laundry services especially for those who does not have any
washing machines or dryer in their house. Some of us may live in a rented house especially
for universities’ students who live nearby. And most of their rented house, does not provide
washing machine to wash their clothes. Therefore, by opening the laundry bar, they able to
settle their laundry process.

1.3 List of Products or Services

Spins Suds is a business store that offers self-laundry services which helps the community to
improve and ease their daily or weekly basis. Spins Suds provides various types of machines
for laundry process. These machines are shown below:

2.0 BUSINESS STRATEGY

2.1 Strategic Location

Spins Suds is operated and located in the area that highly consumed attraction around the
neighborhood. This is because Spins Suds’s location surrounded by many residents and
apartments. The shop itself is facing the main road which allow an easy access for the
community who pass by. Besides, the area is highly guaranteed to thrive for the next few
years as there are a lot of developments and constructions of new housing area and
education centre. Thus, the communities and customers will surely choose the Spins Suds’s
services due to its strategic location.

2.2 Good Facilities

Spins Suds provides many good facilities for the customers to attract customer. Spins Suds
provides basket so that, the customers will able to transfer their clothes from washer to
dryer. Besides, Spins Suds also provide seats and Wifi which allow them to rest and relax
while waiting for their clothes to be done. There are also other interesting facilities and
such as vending machine, television and magazine that will kill their times and prevent
them from boredom.

3.0 MARKETING STRATEGY

Spins Sud-coin Operated Laundry is a laundry company that has been in operation since 2016. It
is located at Bandar Seri Alam, Masai, Johor. In this era, every people want and think of anything
simpler which can make their life easier either on completing their daily basis or weekly basis.
Encik Hanafi bin Jamaluddin, who is the supervisor of the laundry bar said almost everyone
nowadays use media social in their daily life. Therefore, he is going to use all the media platform
to promote or advertise his Spins Suds laundry.

In this modern era, people like to go online shopping rather than buying things from the store. So,
online shopping is more preferable rather than spending so much time inside the store. This
situation gave an idea for Encik Shafie and Encik Jamaluddin to promote their Spins Suds Laundry
services online on Instagram, Facebook and any other social media platform.

3.1 Place

Spins Suds-coin Operated Laundry has a very strategic place and location. The location is very
strategic because there are many buildings around it for example apartments, universities and
housing areas. To attract more customers, Encik Hanafi will make sure his laundry is bright in
color as it not only can change the perspective of the customer about the laundry, it also can
attract people who pass by. When the laundry is bright, people will not be afraid to go there
even it is already midnight. In addition, there are also six CCTV located inside and outside the
Spins Suds Laundry to ensure the safety of the customers.

3.2 Services

For Spins Suds-coin Operated Laundry, there are two main services provided for people.
Firstly, people can wash their clothes. There are six washings provided. The best part of
washing clothes is Spin Suds also provided customers with detergent and softener for free
without cost them any additional coins needed. Next, Spins Suds also provides dryer. People
can directly dry their clothes using the dryer provided as soon as the clothes being washed.
There are advantages for using dryer at Spins Suds as the minimum amount of coins is RM1.
Customers also can choose the temperature for the dryer according to their desire. They can
set to minimum, medium or maximum temperature. People really need this type of dryer as
some fabric cannot sustain high temperature or else it will be damaged.
3.3 Price

The price offers to the customers are reasonable as it can be afforded by every customer. For
the washing machine, the price charge is fixed at RM4.00 and for the dryer, the minimum
amount is RM1.00. It has been proved that the prices are undeniably cheap and affordable.

3.4 Promotion

3.4.1 Promote on social media

The first marketing strategy is by doing advertisement on Facebook. Nowadays, Facebook

has variety templates that can help any company to promote their business. Therefore,
Encik Hanafi takes this opportunity to promote Spins Suds Laundry. He also creates a
business account on Facebook so people can easily visit the account and receive updates
regarding everything that related to Spins Suds. In addition, he also does an investment on
Facebook where he paid Facebook to do an advertisement where it will be appeared on
other’s Facebook account.

3.4.2 Give Discount During Opening

When Spins Suds first opened, Encik Hanafi decided to give discount to the customers. As
we all know, everyone will be excited when they heard about promotion or discount. For
example, when H&M doing the mega sale, there are so many people shopping online
through the website and people also come to the store to shop. So, Encik Hanafi decided
to give discount about 90% from the original price on the first day of its opening day till
the end of the month.
4.0 OPERATIONAL STRATEGY

4.1 Manpower Planning

Spins Suds-coin Operated Laundry does not require many workers due to their self-service
system. Therefore, less human energy is needed to do works at the laundry. The staffs or
workers at the Spins Suds only consist of a cleaner, a technician, a worker, a supervisor and
the General Manager. Encik Shafie thought that he does not need many workers for a small
business as his brother, Encik Hanafi can handle most of the responsibilities by himself with
the help from the other three workers.

4.2 Payment Methods

Spins Suds-coin Operated Laundry allows people and customers to use any acceptable coins
in order to pay for the charges. Compare to other laundry bar, some of them are quite
troublesome as they only accept tokens in order to pay for the charges. Besides, the Spins Suds
provides two coins changer machines for those who wanted to change their money into coins.
It will be a lot easier as it helps the customers to change their money without trouble. They do
not need to find other people or store in order to change their money into coins.

4.3 Operation Hours

The Spins Suds-coin Operated Laundry opens and operates 24 hours a day which means it is
open all the time. This will help the customers who is in a hurry especially in drying their
clothes to do the laundry process anytime of the day. They do not have to wait for the shop to
open and can straight away do their laundry.
5.0 FINANCIAL ACHIEVEMENT

5.1 Profits

Based on the interview, Encik Hanafi said his business run very well. Customers also give
good feedback and they repeatedly use Spins Suds Laundry. Encik Hanafi once said that the
important things on running a business is to maintain the good services, so that customers will
repeat and even promote to their family and friends. Encik Hanafi told us that average amount
that he received per day is around RM500 which mean he will get around RM15000 per month.
So annually, he will get around RM180000 profit. Those amounts are before being deducted
for workers salary, electricity bills and any other additional bills. These informations were the
data and knowledge that we obtained throughout the interview session.

5.2 Future Planning

In the future, Encik Hanafi plans to expand his business by adding more branches around Johor
Bahru and Pasir Gudang. He is now focusing on savings in order to open new branch at Tebrau
area. For the new branch, he planned to improve the services by providing additional services
such as delivery and drop-off system to ease customers works and basis.
6.0 LIST OF STRENGTH, WEAKNESS OPPORTUNITY AND THREAT (S.W.O.T)

6.1 Strength

6.1.1 Can use any type of coin

Spin Suds’s machines are having an advantage than other local laundry service since it
does not need a specific usage of coin to function. Usually in other local laundry service
shop, it requires you to have a specific type of coin for the machine to start working. For
example, 50 cents coin. Besides, there are also machines that require tokens to do so. So,
these types of machines that use any type of Malaysian coins are very helpful.

6.1.2 Provides good facilities

Spin Suds provides good facilities such as television, magazines, a large number of chair
and tables, and even vending machine. So, these things will help customers to kill their
time waiting for the clothes and provide comfortableness for them.

6.1.3 Does not need many worker

At Spin Suds, there are only five persons in charge. There is a technician that will solve
the maintenance issues and so far, there are not having any problem for having only one
technician to do the job. The cleaner does have her own shift and schedule. So, she does
not have to stay there entirely and only come to clean stuffs during her shift. While, the
other worker will come and check if the detergents and softeners are sufficient and enough
inside each washer.
 6.1.4 Good type of machine used

Spin Suds’s type of washing machine used are Danube. These washer offers a high speed
up to 75 rpm based on their comparison with other type of washing machine. Thus, the
clothes do not have to rely too much on the drying service since the spinning part in the
washing machine is doing a great job to eliminate wetness.

6.1.5 Can monitor CCTV from mobile phones

Spin Suds’s workers can easily watch the live CCTV monitoring at anywhere and anytime.
This will allow them to monitor the security and safety of the customers and machines. It
would be easier as they do not have to be there at the Spins Suds all the time especially
during midnight. Besides, the CCTV will provide recorded videos if anything including
robbery happened inside and outside their shop.

6.2 Weakness

6.2.1 Many Competitors

Spin Suds has a lot of competitors to compete with. Due to strategic location, many other
competitors started to open a self-service laundry near the location of Spin Suds’s Laundry.
At first, Spin Suds needs to compete with three other competitors to attract customers. One
of the competitors has shut their business down probably due to tense competition. Spin
Suds has become one of the survivors of this competition due to its strong marketing
strategy.

6.2.2 Machine Always Breakdown

Every machine has its own expiry date, same goes to the washing and drying machine at
Spin Suds. The washing machines are always in a good condition unlike the drying
machines. The drying machines were always having a breakdown due to several reasons.
One of the famous reasons is customer does not follow the precaution provided in order to
use the machine properly. The broken part in the machine is very expensive. Hence, it
needs some time to order from overseas.
 6.2.3 Limited Exchange Coin

Most of self-service laundry provided exchanging coin machine, same goes to Spin Suds.
At the Spin Suds, there are two exchanging coin machines located beside the washing
machine. The problem that is frequently occurred is, there are limitation for the exchanging
coins prepared. If the coins provided has nothing left, customers can’t exchange any other
bank notes to coins. Thus, making the customer left to find other laundry bar.

6.3 Opportunity

6.3.1 Strategic Location

Spin Suds is located at a very strategic location. The location which is at Jalan Lembah 19
which is near to apartments, two universities and housing areas. Many customers from the
stated location came to Spin Suds for doing their laundry.

6.3.2 Got A Lot of Customer

Since Spin Suds provides a good customer service and location, it gains a lot of customer.
There are a lot of regular customers that come to Spin Suds to do their laundry.

6.3.3 Consistency in Profit

During the interview session, we are informed that Spin Suds never gets lower than RM500
profits per month. Spin Suds Enterprise has been operated since 2016 until now and still
has consistence profits.

6.4 Threat

6.4.1 Demanding Customer

There are various types of customers behavior that come to Spin Suds. One of the most
challenging customers for Spin Suds itself is demanding customer. Some customer always
complaint to the workers even if there is a minor incident occurred. The customer also
demands the management of Spin Suds to rush to the location if there is an incident occur,
otherwise they will start to viral it to the social media.
6.4.2 Technical Faulty

Technical faulty is one of the threats that Spin Suds need to face. Problems such as blackout
sometimes happens at the Spin Suds. This kind of problem will affect the customer. Hence,
it will also affect the business of Spin Suds.

6.4.3 Robbery Attempt

The biggest threats that Spin Suds has ever faced is robbery attempts. Despite having a
numerous closed-circuit television (CCTV), the robbery attempts still occur. Encik Hanafi
said, there are some robbery attempts occurred at the shop mostly in the middle of the night.
Thanks to the numerous CCTV and tight security provided, the management of Spin Suds
has handled the situation safe and sound with the aid of the policemen too.
7.0 COMPANY ANALYSIS (S.W.O.T)

Spin Suds Enterprise provides good facilities for the convenience of its customer. The examples
of the facilities are such exchanger coin machine, magazines section, television and free Wifi
provided. Since to its good facilities, Spin Suds Enterprise got more customer from time to time.
Customers felt that the facilities help to ease and make them comfortable thus making them to feel
very convenience to do their laundry at Spin Suds Enterprise.

Since Spin Suds Enterprise must maintain its good business, they always use a very good and
branded type of machine. Thus, makes Spin Suds Enterprise use a type of machine which offers a
high speed up to 75 rpm. This ensure that the machines used is good in performance. Due to this
advantage, Spin Suds Enterprise has experience consistency in profit. Their profit never gets lower
than their target which is RM500.

Due to modern era, many entrepreneurs have started to open self-laundry service. This same goes
to Spin Suds Enterprise who started its business since 2016 and until now, there are three different
self-laundry service that opens near to Spin Suds Enterprise. To overcome this kind of competition,
Spin Suds Enterprise has set their location to start their business at a very strategic location. The
location chosen is near to apartment, universities and housing areas. This makes Spin Suds
Enterprise can compete with its competitor.

As Spin Suds Enterprise use machines for their business, machines breakdown is usually happened
at certain times. The drying machines are the one which always experienced the breakdown. This
will make the customers having a difficulty to do their laundry at Spin Suds Enterprise. Hence,
this will trigger the customer thus some of the demanding customer will get mad at the business
itself. The customer will start to threat the company which is not good for both sides.

Robbery attempt is one of the unpleasant incidents that Spin Suds Enterprise has ever dealt with.
The robber seems wanted to break the exchanging coin machine to steal the coins inside. The
robbery attempt was failed due to a tight security of Spin Suds Enterprise has provided. Spin Suds
Enterprise’s worker has a closed-circuit television (CCTV) which can be access through phone.
This will help they always know what is happening at Spin Suds Enterprise
8.0 BUSINESS PROBLEMS

8.1 Competition Between Other Laundry Service Shop Nearby

There are three laundry service shop that operated near Spin Suds including themselves. Since
the place are very strategic to run a laundry shop service, so they might encounter some
competition between themselves. So, in order to ensure they business are running well and
won over customers’ choice, they need to come up with some extra fresh strategies and make
sure their machines are functioning well.

8.2 Stray Cats And Dogs

Since Spin Suds’s gate are manually operated, so sometimes customers might forget to close
the fence’s gate. When this happens, stray cats and dogs might go inside the shop and stay
there for a while. It does not matter that much if it is stray cats, but problem came from the
dogs.

8.3 Customers’ Complaint

Having a large number of customers is a good thing, but also can lead to more chances getting
complaint by customers if there are something wrong with the machines. For example, there
are times where the machine malfunction while the customers are using it that might lead to
wasting customers time. So, Spin Suds’s workers need to be very alert about the emergency
phone calls that they may receive anytime based on customers problem and complaint and they
need to solve it to ensure their business’s integrity.
9.0 RECOMMENDATIONS AND IMPROVEMENTS

9.1 Improve Payment Method

In this modern world, people tend to not have cash in their purse or wallet and relying more on
the usage of credit card. We can see that even vending machine that sell drinks does have pay
wave as their payment method these days. So, by offering this to their machines, it might solve
the problem in the process of exchanging money in the coin exchanger as sometimes people
does find trouble to do so. People also does not need to worry about not have cash and can just
bring their credit card to pay for washing and drying charges. One single swipe and it settles
everything.

9.2 Increase the Number of Machines

Since Spin Suds are place in a very strategic place, there are usually a large number of people
come to do laundry especially during rainy days. So, these results in customer queuing for a
very long time. Hence, Spin Suds can solve this by increasing their quantity of machines for
both drying machine and washing machine. By doing this, they also might need to add one
more technician for the maintenance part and make sure everything will run smoothly.

9.3 Open Tender for Campus

Most of the customers that came to Spin Suds are usually students nearby such as UiTM and
UniKL. So, if Spin Suds decides to open their laundry service shop at those campus, it will
make students life easier where they can do laundry anytime without having to go out from the
campus.

9.4 Provides New Branch

From 2016 until now, Spin Suds only have 1 branch in total. Since they knew that their business
is running well since opening, expanding their business to another level by opening new branch
are not considered a problem at all. Moreover, they are many places around Johor Bahru that
can offer the same environment as they are having now.
