lV Read Conwy, the jewel of North Wales and then circle True or False

Conwy is famous for its castle, built in 1283, and its well-preserved old houses. One of
these houses is the biggest tourist attraction in the town – and it’s the smallest house in
Britain.
The house is only 1.8 meters wide, 3 meters high, and 3 meters from front to back –
most adults can’t stand up inside! Over the years, thousands of people from all over the
world have visited the house, and many visitors can’t believe that someone really lived
here. The interior is very, very small, and is a perfect example of how to live with a
minimum of space.
The house has two floors. Downstairs there is only one room – this room is the living
room, the dining room, and the kitchen combined. There are none of the comforts you
would expect to find in a modern house – no cooker or fridge, no washing machine or
dishwasher, no television, and no pictures on the walls. But there is a tiny fireplace
where food can be cooked. There’s also a small, round table, a sofa big enough for two
people, a low stool, and a water tap. There’s one window, which is quite small, and the
room is dark. Up the narrow staircase is one bedroom, with a long single bed and a
chair, but no wardrobe. The toilet isn’t inside; it’s in a separate building outside the back
of the house.
Nobody has lived here since 1900 – the last occupant was a fisherman who was 1.92 m
tall!

We are sorry that our computer ordering system went out on the blink last week. Don´t
worry, the system is now up and running again, but we think goods will arrive 2 or 3
days late. I´d guess the goods you´ve just ordered should arrive round about Thursday.
Thanks a lot for telling us about the problem with the ZP300. You would be pleased to
know the problem´s been put right now. The exhibition you´re organizing, it seems you
want to return any goods you don´t sell. We´re certainly interested, yes, but could I ask
for more details before I let you know?. Finally, just to tell you, as of 1st May your
warehouse is now open 24 hours a day!.

correct definitions.
Telesales have become the bane of my life. Recently I have been so inundated with
them that I now refuse to answer the phone between 6 and 9 in the evenings, Friends
and relatives understand and don´t bother calling at these times. Las week I was almost
talked into accepting a year´s subscription to a video company, before the red mist
descended just in time, and I slammed the phone down. If it´s not advisors premising to
sort out your finances for you, or persuading you to run into life insurance, it will usually
be home improvement companies.
My advice is, don´t be taken in by that friendly chit chat at the beginning of the
conversation. You can see trough all their charming chit chat with ease – all they really
want is your custom and your money. So stand up to them and preferably politely say
“no”.

Customer Service in Banks
The banking profession doesn’t have a very good reputation for customer service at the
moment, and it’s not just due to loss of savings. High street branches are shutting down
and where banks are available, their opening hours are inconvenient. Staff at the desks
is surly, increasingly under-qualified and often unable to answer questions. (154)
__________ Astonishingly, however, 86% of the customers at one bank are either
‘extremely satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with the service they receive. And what is even
more surprising is that the bank in question has no High Street outlets at all.
First National bank is run entirely through the telephone and the internet. And its
success shows that customer service is just about face-to-face contact with clients. The
primary concern of the bank is recruiting the right people. (155) __________ So they
only recruit people who already exhibit good communication skills.
And unlike other services that operate primarily over the telephone, the staff at First
National does not use scripts. (156) __________ What this bank asks for is that staff be
themselves and establish a rapport with their customers. Part of this is recognizing
people’s needs. (157) __________ Some want the process to be swift and efficient.
The member of staff has to pick up on the caller’s mood and react accordingly.
(158) __________ The idea that customer service can be improved on a medium where
there is no actual contact with a member of staff may seem strange at first. However,
the website designers at First National spend a great deal of time understanding their
customers and offering services which meet their needs. (159) __________ First
National is already taking steps to fill this demand. (160) __________when their account
falls below a certain level. In the future, online systems may pre-empt customers’ needs
in even more sophisticated ways.

A Although people do not expect much from the internet these days, this will change in
the future.
B The managers recognize that customers find them impersonal and unnatural.
C First National is also preparing to adopt this personal approach to its internet banking.
D They have the attitude that some skills, such as keyboard skills and so on, can be
taught, but a member of staff can’t be taught to be a nice person.
E Telephones are very personal because staff is speaking to people on their own
territory.
F And if customers try to contact the bank by telephone, they are put through to a call
center in another country where they have to speak slowly in order to be understood.
G Not everyone wants a chatty, friendly service.
H They already offer a service in which customers receive a text when funds are
