Transformational Grammar Basics

Transformational grammar (TGG) proposes that beneath the surface structure of sentences lies a deep structure. TGG uses phrase structure rules, transformational rules, and morphophonemic rules to relate deep structures to surface structures. Transformational rules convert one sentence structure into another without changing meaning, through processes like auxiliary inversion, passives, and generalized transformations. The key components of TGG are phrase structure rules, transformational rules, and morphophonemic rules.

"Beneath every sentence, in the mind of speakers is an invisible inaudible deep structure" (Mental

Lexicon) Noam Chomsky.

CONCEPT OF TGG

Unlike structuralists whose goal was to examine the sentences we actually speak and to describe their
systematic nature.

They wanted to unlock the secrets of language to build a model of our internal rules, a model that would
produce all of the grammatical and no un grammatical sentences.

TRANSFORMATION

transformation is a particular process of alteration by which one sentence structure is converted into
another sentence structure without any change in the meaning (Jacob and Rosebaum) (1968)

When a deep structure undergoes a rule or rules and the end result is a sequence that can be spoken ,
the rule has transformed the sequence causes no transformational rules can ever be allowed to change
meaning ( Elgin 1973).
