University of Engineering and Technology Peshawar: Electrical Machines

This document summarizes several experiments conducted in an electrical machines lab. It describes how a magnetic field is produced by current flowing in a conductor, and how the strength of the field increases with more turns of wire. It also explains that a magnetic field is stronger when a magnetic core is inserted into a coil compared to a coil without a core. Additionally, it discusses the phenomenon of remanence where a magnetic material retains some magnetism even after being removed from a magnetic field.

Magnetic circuit
Magnetic field is defined as “a close path followed by group of magnetic flux lines”.

Detection of magnetic field around current carrying conductor

When current flows in current carrying wire, it produces magnetic field around it. The direction of
magnetic field can be determined by right hand rule. Set the thumb of the right hand in the direction of
current, the curl of the fingers shows the direction of magnetic field.

Effect of number of turns of conductor on magnetic field

Magnetic field around conductor is directly proportional to the number of turns. It can be observed from
the deflection of the compass needle that when the number of turns of current carrying conductor
increases, magnetic field also increases.

Magnetic field around current carrying coil with core and without core
Magnetic field also depend upon the core in coil. When a core is inserted in current carrying coil it
become a strong electromagnet. It can also be observed from magnetic compass needle, when there is
no core in the coil the compass needle shows little deflection but when a magnetic core is inserted in
the coil it produces a large deflection in compass.

Remanence effect or residual magnetization

When a magnetic material is place in magnetic field it magnetizes. When the magnetic field is removed
the demagnetization take some time. The time taken by magnetization and demagnetization defend
upon the magnetic properties of the material.

It can also be observed from the compass needle that when a magnetic material is taken out from the
current carrying coil and bring it near compass it deflects compass needle. This is due to remanence
effect or residual magnetization.
