Sieve Analysis
(ASTM C 136)
Scope:
Sieve analysis is used to find different particle sizes and their percentage in a soils. It
helps to classify the soil.
Apparatus
1. A set of sieves
2. Mechanical soil pulverized
3. Balance, sensitive to 0.1 gm
4. Mechanical sieve shaker
Procedure:
Obtain 500 gram of soil sample which has already
been pulverized or washed by placing it on sieve no.
200 and then oven dried.
Arrange a nest of sieves including Sieves No. 4, 10,
30, 40, 50, 100, 200 and at bottom place pan.
Place the stack of sieves in the mechanical sieves
shaker and sieve for 5 to 10 minutes. Note that if the
entire stack of sieves doesn’t fit into the shaker ,
perform a hand shaking operation until the top few
sieves can be removed from the stack and then place
the remainder of the stack in the mechanical shaker.
Remove the nest of sieves from the shaker and
obtain the weight of material retained on each sieve.
Sum these weights and compare with actual weight
taken loss of more than two percent by weight of the residual weight is considered
unsatisfactory and the test should be repeated.
Compute the percentage retained on each sieve by dividing the weight retained
on each sieve by original sample weight and multiply by 100.
Compute % cumulative weight of % retain.
Compute the percent passing (percentage finer), by subtracting % cumulative
from 100%.
Plot grain size distribution curve by taking % passing on y-axis and size of grain
on x-axis on a semi-logarithmic graph.
