Marine Biology: Cnidaria Overview

The document describes three species from the phylum Cnidaria: 1) Sarcophyton trocheliophorum, a soft coral commonly kept in reef aquariums. 2) Scleractinia s., hard corals that are the reef-builders of the coral world. 3) Aurelia aurita, the moon jellyfish, a widely studied species of jellyfish.

PHYLUM CNIDARIA
Cnidaria is a phylum under Kingdom Animalia containing over 11,000 species of animals
found exclusively in aquatic environments: they are predominantly marine. Their
distinguishing feature is cnidocytes, specialized cells that they use mainly for capturing prey.

 Soft Coral (Sarcophyton trocheliophorum)

Sarcophyton (coral) Sarcophyton is a genus of corals in the family Alcyoniidae that
are commonly kept in reef aquaria.

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Cnidaria
Class: Anthozoa
Order: Alcyonacea
Family: Alcyoniidae
Genus: Sarchophyton
Species: trocheliophorum

 Hard Coral (Scleractinia s.)

Stony corals, also called hard corals (as opposed to soft corals, like sea fans), are the
reef-builders of the coral world.

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Cnidaria
Class: Anthozoa
Order: Scleractinia
 Moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita)
Aurelia aurita (also called the common jellyfish, moon jellyfish, moon jelly or saucer
jelly) is a widely studied species of the genus Aurelia. All species in the genus are
closely related, and it is difficult to identify Aurelia medusae without genetic
sampling; most of what follows applies equally to all species of the genus

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Cnidaria
Class: Scyphozoa
Order: Semaeostomeae
Family: Ulmaridae
Genus: Aurelia
Species: A. aurita
