Reaction Paper

An article “ Half of U.S. Children with Mental Health Disorders Are Not

Treated” written by Beata Mostafavi talks about the importance of

determining symptoms of behavioral problems in early age and numbers of

untreated mental health issue in children. It is says that almost 7.7 million

children and teenagers have mental health disorders such as ADHD,

Depression, and anxiety. Half of these young people did not receive any

treatment, according to the University of Michigan study published in JAMA

Pediatrics. “Untreated mental health disorders can have a debilitating impact

on children’s healthful growth and throughout their transition to adulthood,”

says lead author Daniel Whitney, Ph.D., a post-doctoral fellow with Michigan

Medicine’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. It state that

treatment varied widely by state. Some country had the lowest prevalence of

children left untreated while others have it higher. They suggest that this

problem must be addressed by changing policy in places where many

children are left untreated.

This article is relevant to problems that we encounter in today’s world.

If we look at the status quo, we can see that many of young people who

experience difficulty focusing, remembering, self- care and students who are

at risk have something to do with their past experiences. Children with

mental health issue may develop this characteristic in their adulthood life. It

can also disrupt the child’s functioning at school that may affect their

academic life. As a result, the child may be prone to failure if not treated

immediately. Most of students who have behavioral problems also

experience problem in their home, where their personality was also

developed. Since the government can’t help every child in a country,

caregivers must also be aware of these certain issues that a child might have

in order for them to find ways in preventing it to develop.

Children mostly develop their personality just by observing the elder’s

behavior. It is the parent’s responsibility to provide a safe environment for

their child’s learning. Parent’s must be ready and alert in symptoms of a

child behavioral problems. me experience a behavioral problem at the age of

12, the stage where teenagers and parent argument usually happens. It was

a hard experience, but I was treated by a psychiatrist. If it wasn’t because of

my parents and the help of medications, I would still be unstable today. This

is why parent’s awareness about their child’s condition is very important as

they are the ones who guide the child for their future.
