COURSE CONTENTS
THEORY
Agriculture, its definition and history. Importance of Agriculture, its branches and allied sciences to Agronomy. Salient features of
Pakistan’s agriculture. Definition of Agro-meteorology. Agricultural meteorology. Definition of climate and weather. Climate and
weather of Pakistan. Elements of weather. Classification of climate and factors affecting climate. Climate-crop relationship.
Classification of climate. Definition of soil, importance, sub-soil, composition of soil, geological and textural classification,
Classification based on water supply. Physical properties of soil, viz., Soil texture, Soil structure, Soil porosity, weight and
consistency. Color, depth, air, temperature, moisture, forms of soil water (Gravitational, capillary, hygroscopic). Control (run off,
percolation, seepage, interception, evaporation, transpiration). Definition of Irrigation, purpose and source. Methods of irrigation.
Measurement of water, cusec, acre inch, gallon. Definition of water requirements of crops, factors affecting water requirement of crop.
Duty of water, delta of water, to increase acreage and production under irrigation. Crop protection measures. Land resources and their
utilization in Pakistan. Farming systems, cropping systems, cropping pattern, cropping scheme, agro-ecological zone. Agro-ecological
zones of Pakistan. Agro-based and agriculture related industries of Pakistan. Demonstration of basic equipments used in
meteorological observatory.
PRACTICAL
Units of land measurement-conventional and metric systems. Identification and use of hand tools and implements. Field area visits.
Identification of crop plants, Identification of weeds. Identification of crop seeds. Demonstration of fertilizer application methods.
