REGULATIONS
1. DURATION OF THE PROGRAME

1.1. Three years (six semesters)


1.2. Each academic year shall be divided into two
semesters. The odd semesters shall consist of the
period from June to November of each year and the
even semesters from December to April of each year.
1.3 There shall be not less than 90 working 'days for each
semester.
2. ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION

2.1.The details of Eligibility for Admission specified in


ANNEXURE I

3. CREDIT REQUIRMENTS AND ELIGIBILITY FOR AWARD OF


DEGREE

3.1. A Candidate shall be eligible for the award of the


Degree only if he/she has undergone the prescribed
course of study in a College affiliated to the
University for a period of not less than three
academic years and passed the examinations of all
the Six Semesters prescribed earning a minimum of
140 credits as per the distribution given in
Regulation 4 for PartI, II, III, IV& V and also fulfilled
such other conditions as have been prescribed
thereof.
4. COURSE OF STUDY, CREDITS AND SCHEME OF

4.2. DETAILS OF COURSE OF STUDY OF PARTS I – V

4.2.1. PART I: Tamil and Other Languages: Tamil or any


one of the following Modern (Indian or Foreign) or
Classical languages at the option of candidates and
according to the syllabus and text-books prescribed
from time to time:
a.Modern:
Indian: Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Urdu & Hindi
Foreign: Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese
& Russian
b.Classical: Sanskrit, Arabic & Persian

4.2.2. PART II: English: According to the syllabus and


text-books prescribed from time to time

4.2.3. PART III: Core, Allied and Project/Three Elective


Courses: As prescribed by the concerned Board of
Studies
4.2.4. PART IV:
i. Basic Tamil/ Advanced Tamil/ NME:
a. Students who have not studied Tamil up to XII
STD and have taken any Language other than
Tamil in Part I shall take Basic Tamil
comprising of Two Courses (level will be at 6th
Standard).
b. Students who have studied Tamil up to XII
STD and have taken any Language other than
Tamil in Part I shall take Advanced Tamil
comprising of Two Courses.
c. Students who have studied Tamil up to XII
STD and also have taken Tamil in Part I shall
take Non-Major Elective comprising of Two
Courses.
ii. Soft Skill Courses
iii. Environmental Studies
iv. Value Education

4.2.5. PART V: Extension Activities:
Students shall be awarded a maximum of 1 Credit
for Compulsory Extension Service. All the Students
shall have to enrol for NSS /NCC/ NSO (Sports &
Games) Rotract/ Youth Red Cross or any other
Service Organizations in the College and shall have
to put in compulsory minimum attendance of 40
hours which shall be duly certified by the Principal
of the College before 31st March in a year. If a
student lacks 40 hours attendance in the first year,
he or she shall have to compensate the same
during the subsequent years.
Those students who complete minimum
attendance of 40 hours in one year will get ‘half-a-
credit and those who complete the attendance of
80 or more hours in Two Years will get ‘one credit’.
Literacy and Population Education and Field Work
shall be compulsory components in the above
extension service activities.
4.2.6. Scheme of Examinations and Syllabus of each
programme as given separately in Annexure-II
4.3. Inclusion of the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)
available on SWAYAM, NPTEL and other such portals
approved by the University Authorities.

4.3.1. The Chairperson, Board of Studies (Both autonomous


and non-autonomous colleges) consider the available
MOOCs and choose the courses to be included under
Core, Elective and Soft Skill category and also the
number of credits for such courses based on the
content and duration of course. The credit for such
courses shall be included as part of the Core, Elective
and Soft Skill to award the Degree. The number of
credit will be decide at the University level for such
courses which are relevant to more than one
department such as soft skills and elective courses.

6.REQUIREMENTS FOR PROCEEDING TO SUBSEQUENT
SEMESTER
6.1. Eligibility: Students shall be eligible to go to subsequent
semester only if they earn sufficient attendance as
prescribed therefor by the Syndicate from time to
time.
6.2. Attendance: All Students must earn 75% and above of
attendance for appearing for the University
Examination. (Theory/Practical)
6.3. Condonation of shortage of attendance: If a Student
fails to earn the minimum attendance (Percentage
stipulated), the Principals shall condone the shortage
of attendance up to a maximum limit of 10% (i.e.
between 65% and above and less than 75%) after
collecting the prescribed fee of Rs.250/-each for
Theory/Practical examination separately,(Theory
Rs.250/- Per semester/Per Student: Practical Rs.250/-
Per semester/Per Student) towards the condonation of
shortage of attendance. Such fees collected and
should be remitted to the University.
6.4.Non-eligibility for condonation of shortage of
attendance: Students who have secured less than 65
% but more than 50 %of attendance are NOT ELIGIBLE
for condonation of shortage of attendance and such
Students will not be permitted to appear for the
regular examination, but will be allowed to proceed to
the next year/next semester of the program and they
may be permitted to take next University examination
by paying theprescribed condonation fee of Rs.250/-
each for Theory/Practical separately. Such fees shall
be remitted to the University. Name of such Students
should be forwarded to the University along with their
attendance details in the prescribed format
mentioning the category (3 copies) Year wise/Branch
wise/Semester wise together with the fees collected
from them, so as to enable them to get permission

from the University and to attend the Theory/Practical
examination subsequently without any difficulty.

6.5.Detained students for want of attendance: Students


who have earned less than 50% of attendance shall be
permitted to proceed to the next semester and to
complete the Program of study. Such Students shall
have to repeat the semester, which they have missed
by rejoining after completion of final semester of the
course, by paying the fee for the break of study as
prescribed by the University from time to time.

6.6. Condonation of shortage of attendance for married


women students: In respect of married women
students undergoing UG programs, the minimum
attendance for condonation (Theory/Practical) shall be
relaxed and prescribed as 55% instead of 65% if they
conceive during their academic career. Medical
certificate from the Doctor(D.G.O) attached to the
Government Hospital and the prescribed fee of
Rs.250/-therefor together with the attendance details
shall be forwarded to the university to consider the
condonation of attendance mentioning the category.

6.7.Zero Percent (0%) Attendance: The Students, who have


earned 0% of attendance, have to repeat the program
(by rejoining) without proceeding to succeeding
semester and they have to obtain prior permission
from the University immediately to rejoin the program.

6.8. Transfer of Studentsand Credits:The strength of the


credits system is that it permits inter Institutional
transfer of students. By providing mobility, it enables
individual students to develop their capabilities fully by
permitting them to move from one Institution to
another in accordance with their aptitude and abilities.

6.8.1.Transfer of Students is permitted from one
Institution to another Institution for the same
program with same nomenclature.
Provided, there is a vacancy in the respective
program of Study in the Institution where the
transfer is requested.
Provided the Student should have passed all the
courses in the Institution from where the transfer
is requested.

6.8.2.The marks obtained in the courses will be


converted and grades will be assigned as per the
University norms.
6.8.3.The transfer students are eligible for
classification.
6.8.4.The transfer students are not eligible for Ranking,
Prizes and Medals.
6.8.5. Students who want to go to foreign Universities
upto two semesters or Project Work with the
prior approval of the Departmental/College
Committee are allowed to get transfer of credits
and marks which will be converted into Grades as
per the University norms and are eligible to get
CGPA and Classification; they are not eligible for
Ranking, Prizes and Medals.

6.9. Students are exempted from attendance requirements


for online courses of the University and MOOCs.

7. EXAMINATION AND EVALUATION (Autonomous Colleges


can modify these regulations and get it approval in their
College Academic Council)

7.1.Register for all subjects: Students shall be permitted to


proceed from the First Semester up to Final Semester
irrespective of their failure in any of the Semester
Examination. For this purpose, Students shall register

for all the arrear subjects of earlier semesters along
with the current (subsequent) Semester Subjects.

7.4: (i) Awarding Marks for Attendance (out of 5)


Attendance below 60% = 0 marks, 60 % to 75% = 3 marks,
75 % to 90% = 4 marks and above 90%= 5 marks
(ii)Conducting Practical and Project Viva-voce
Examination: By Internal and External Examiners

7.4.1. Improvement of Internal Assessment Marks.


(a) Should have cleared end-semester University
examination with more than40% Marks in UG.
(b) Should have obtained less than 30% marks in the
Internal Assessment

(c) Should be permitted to improve internal assessment
within N+2 years where N is denoted for number of
years of the programme.
(d) Chances for reassessment will be open only for 25% of
all core courses in Colleges and only one chance per
course will be given.
(e) The Principal will decide based on the request for
reassessment and designate a faculty member of the
department to conduct the examination and
evaluation.
(f) The reassessment may be based on a written test /
assignment or any other for the entire internal
assessment marks.
(g) The candidate must register for examination in the on-
line system along with prescribed examination fee for
that course.
7.5. Question Paper Pattern for End Semester (University)

7.6. PASSING MINIMUM


7.6.1 There shall be no passing minimum for Internal.
7.6.2 For external examination, passing minimum shall
be 40% [Forty Percentage] of the maximum marks
prescribed for the paper for each
Paper/Practical/Project and Viva-Voce.

7.6.3 In the aggregate [External/Internal] the passing
minimum shall be of 40%.
7.6.4. He/She shall be declared to have passed the whole
examination, if he/she passes in all the papers and
practical wherever prescribed as per the scheme
of the examinations by earning 140 CREDITS in
PartI, II, III, IV & V. He/she shall also fulfil the
extension activities prescribed earning a minimum
of 1 credit to qualify for the Degree.
7.7. INSTANT EXAMINATION: Instant Examinations is
conducted for the students who appeared in the final
semester examinations. Eligible criteria for appearing in
the Instant Examinations are as follows:

7.7.1. Eligibility:A Student who is having arrear of only


one theory paper in the current final semester
examination of the UG Degree programme alone is
eligible to appear for the Instant Examinations.
7.7.2 Non-eligibility for one arrear paper: A Student who
is having more than one arrear paper at the time of
publication of results is not eligible to appear for
the Instant Examinations.
7.7.3. Non-eligibility for arrear in other semester:
Student having arrear in any other semester is not
eligible and a Student who is absent in the current
appearance is also not eligible for appearing for the
Instant Examinations and those Student who have
arrear in Practical/Project are not eligible for the
Instant Examinations.
7.7.4. Non-eligibility for those completed the program:
Students who have completed their Program
duration but having arrears are not eligible to
appear for Instant Examinations.

7.8. RETOTALLING, REVALUATION AND PHOTOCOPY OF THE
ANSWER SCRIPTS:

7.8.1. Re-totaling: All UG Students who appeared for


their Semester Examinations are eligible for
applying for re-totaling of their answer scripts.

7.8.2. Revaluation: All current batch Students who have


appeared for their Semester Examinations are
eligible for Revaluation of their answer scripts.
Passed out candidates are not eligible for
Revaluation.
7.8.3. Photocopy of the answer scripts: Students who
have applied for revaluation can download their
answer scripts from the University Website after
fifteen days from the date of publication of the
results.

7.9. The examination and evaluation for MOOCs will be as per


the requirements of the Courses and will be specified at
the beginning of the Semester in which such courses are
offered and will be notified by the University

8. CLASSIFICATION OF SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS

8.1. PART I TAMIL / OTHER LANGUAGES; PART II ENGLISH


AND PART III CORE SUBJECTS, ALLIED, ELECTIVES
COURSES AND PROJECT: Successful Students
passing the Examinations for the Part I, Part II and Part
III courses and securing the marks (a) 60 percent and
above and (b) 50 percent and above but below 60
percent in the aggregate shall be declared to have
passed the examination in the FIRST and SECOND class
respectively; all other successful candidates shall be
declared to have passed the examination in the THIRD
Class.

9. MARKS AND GRADES: The following table shows the
marks, grade points, letter grades and classification to
indicate the performance of the Student:

9.1.Computation of Grade Point Average (GPA) in a
Semester, Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) and
Classification
GPA for a Semester: = ∑iCiGi ÷ ∑iCi
That is, GPA is the sum of the multiplication of grade points
by the credits of the coursesdivided by the sum of the
credits of the courses in a semester.
CGPA for the entire programme: = ∑n∑iCniGni ÷∑n∑iCni
That is, CGPA is the sum of the multiplication of grade
points by the credits of the entire programme divided by
thesum of the credits of the courses of the entire
programme
Where,
Ci= Credits earned for course i in any semester,
Gi = Grade Points obtained for course i in any semester
n = Semester in which such courses were credited.

10. RANKING
Students who pass all the examinations prescribed for the
Program in the FIRST APPEARANCE ITSELF ALONE are
eligible for Ranking / Distinction, provided in the case of
Students who pass all the examinations prescribed for the
Program with a break in the First Appearance due to the
reasons as furnished in the Regulations 6 supra are only
eligible for Classification.

11.CONCESSIONS FOR DIFFERENTLY-ABLED STUDENTS


11.1.Dyslexia students: For students who are mentally
disabled, learning disability and mental retardation,
who are slow learners, who are mentally impaired
having learning disorder and seizure disorder and
students who are spastic and cerebral Palsy, the
following concessions shall be granted:
i) Part I Foundation course Tamil or any other
Language can be exempted.
ii) One-third of the time of paper may be given as
extra time in the examination.
iii) Leniency in overlooking spelling mistakes, and
iv) Amanuensis for all courses provided the request
is duly certified by the Medical Board of the
Government Hospital/ General Hospital/ District

headquarters Hospitals and they shall be declared
qualified for the degree if they pass the other
examinations prescribed for the degree.
11.2.Hearing, Speaking Impaired & Mentally retarded:
For students who are hearing and speaking
impaired and who are mentally challenged, the
following concessions shall be granted:
i) One Language paper either Part I Foundation
course Tamil or any other Language or Part II
English or its equivalent can be exempted
ii) Part IV Non-Major Elective (NME) or Basic Tamil
or Advanced Tamil can be exempted.
11.3. Visually Challenged students:
i) Exempted from paying examination fees.
ii) A scribe shall be arranged by the College and the
scribe be paid as per the College decision.
12.MAXIMUM PERIOD FOR COMPLETION OF THE
PROGRAMS TO QUALIFY FOR A DEGREE
12.1. A Student who for whatever reasons is not able to
complete the program within the normal period (N)
or the Minimum duration prescribed for the
programme, may be allowed two years period
beyond the normal period to clear the backlog to
be qualified for the degree. (Time Span = N + 2
years for the completion of programme.)
12.2. In exceptional cases like major accidents and child
birth an extension of one year be considered
beyond maximum span of time(Time Span = N + 2
+1 years for the completion of programme).
12.3. Students qualifying during the extended period shall
not be eligible for RANKING.
Note: Autonomous Colleges have their freedom to modify
any of the above regulations based on the UGC
guidelines for Autonomous Colleges or guidelines
of the Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher
Education with the approval of the University.

ANNEXURE-I

Eligibility for Admission


A pass in the Higher Secondary Examinations (Academic or
Vocational Stream) conducted by the Government of Tamil
Nadu or an Examination accepted as equivalent thereof by
the Syndicate of the University of Madras and the subjects
specified below:

B. COM (HONS)
1. OBJECTIVES

The main objectives of the program as follows:

i) To develop the conceptual and practical skills of the


students aimed at the intellectual pursuit of knowledge
of commercial sciences
ii) To help understand methods and processes of
commerce in every area of activity
iii) To expose them to the areas of application of
knowledge in business firms and industrial
organizations, and
iv) To enable them to acquire complete basic and
intermediary practical knowledge of various commerce
subjects with the sole purpose of making them self
dependant and easily employable

2. ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION

Candidates for admission to the first year of the degree


of B. Com (Hons) Program shall be required to have
passed Higher Secondary examination or its equivalent
with an aggregate of 75 % marks in ‘Commerce Group’
consisting of papers such as Commerce, Accountancy
and Business Mathematics.

3. ELIGIBILITY FOR THE AWARD OF DEGREE

A Candidate shall be eligible for the award of the


B.Com. (Hons.) Degree only if he/she has undergone
the prescribed course of study in a College affiliated to
the University for a period of not less than three
academic years, passed the examinations of all the six
Semesters prescribed, earning 167 credits and also
fulfilled such conditions as may have been prescribed
thereof.

4. DURATION
The duration of the program shall be three years. (a)
Each academic year shall be divided into two
semesters. The first academic year shall comprise the
first and second semesters, the second academic year
the third and fourth semesters, and the third academic
year as the fifth and sixth semesters (b) the odd
semesters shall consist of the period from June to
November of each year and the even semesters from
December to April of each year. There shall be not less
than 90 working days for each semester.

5.2. DETAILS OF COURSE OF STUDY OF PARTS I – V: Same

5.3 Learning Methodology: In order to make possible


effective learning, the following methodology is required
to be followed by colleges offering the program:

5.4 Internship
5.4.1In order to pave way for industry-integrated learning
and also to enable students to obtain better
practical knowledge and hands-on experience, every
student shall undergo Internship for a period of
fourteen weeks as specified below:

 Two weeks of Internship at the end of the first,


third and fifth Semesters
 Four weeks of Internship at the end of the
second and fourth Semesters respectively
5.4.2.The Internship shall be practice oriented. The
students shall have to go to the offices of the
companies with which the MOU is signed by the
college and shall receive On-job training on the
diverse fields of activities of those companies.

5.5 Class strength: In order to ensure successfulness of the


program, maximum class strength shall be 40 students.
5.6 Specialty: Subjects will be taught in all functional areas
and hence there shall be NO specialty.

5.7.Criteria for affiliation

5.7.1.Affiliation shall be granted only to such colleges:


 Which could enter into B. Com (Hons)-specific
MOUs with companies
 Which have a NAAC accreditation of at least ‘B’
grade
 Any other criteria which this University might
decide in future
5.7.2.There shall be ONLY ONE SECTION of B. Com (Hons)
Program for an institution at any given point of
time and under no circumstances, affiliation shall
be granted by this University for additional sections

5.8.MOU with companies: Colleges that seek affiliation for


the program shall have MOU with a minimum of 3
companies in the following sector for a sanctioned
strength of 40 students in a class. Of the three
companies, at least two companies must be listed
companies.

 Companies in the banking sector


 Companies in the insurance sector
 Companies in the manufacturing sector
 Companies in the IT sector
 Chartered Accountancy (CA) firms with an annual
turnover shall not be less Rs. 1 crore

5.9.Faculty composition: To ensure the success of the


program and to realize the objective of the program, the
composition of the faculty shall be as follows:

 75 %: In-house Faculty
 25 %: Faculty from MOU Companies

5.10.Review and corrective mechanism: The functioning of
the B. Com (Hons) Program shall be reviewed every year
by the Board of Studies, which shall consist of Chairmen
of UG and PG Board of Studies and other members who
shall be nominated by the Vice-Chancellor. The college
concerned will be disaffiliated from offering the B. Com
(Hons) Program in the event of non-adherence to the
regulations of the program.

6.REQUIREMENTS FOR PROCEEDING TO SUBSEQUENT

7. EXAMINATION AND EVALUATION (Autonomous Colleges


can modify these regulations and get it approval in their

irrespective of their failure in any of the Semester
Examination. For this purpose Students shall register
for all the arrear subjects of earlier semesters along

(f) The reassessment may be based on a written test /
assignment or any other for the entire internal
assessment marks.
(g) The candidate must register for examination in the on-
line system along with prescribed examination fee for

8. PASSING MINIMUM

8.1A candidate shall be declared to have passed: in each


theory paper/ practical paper wherever prescribed if he
or she secures a minimum of 50 % in languages, Non-
major Elective, Environmental Studies and in each of
the core papers as follows:
a. There shall be no Passing Minimum for Internal.
b. For External Examination, Passing Minimum shall be of
50% (Fifty Percentage) for languages, Non-major
Elective, Environmental Studies and also for core
subjects/Internship/Project and Viva-voce.
c. In the aggregate (External + Internal) the passing
minimum shall be of 50% (Fifty Percentage) for
languages, Non-major Elective, Environmental Studies
and also for core subjects/Internship /Project and
Viva-voce.
d. He/ She shall be declared to have passed the whole
examination, if he/she passes in all the papers and
practical wherever prescribed / as per the scheme of

examinations by earning 167 CREDITS in Parts-I, II, III,
IV & V. He/she shall also fulfill the extension activities
prescribed earning a minimum of 1 Credit to qualify
for the B.Com. (Hons.) Degree.

9. CLASSIFICATION OF SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES


9.1. PART I TAMIL/OTHER LANGUAGES ANDPART II
ENGLISHAND PART III CORE SUBJECTS, ALLIED
SUBJECTS, AND PROJECT/ELECTIVES: Successful
Students passing the examinations for Part-I, Part-II
and Part-III Courses together and securing the marks
(i) 60 percent and above (ii) 50 percent and above but
below 60 percent in the aggregate shall be declared
to have passed the examination in the FIRST and
SECOND class respectively. Others, who secure 75%
and above shall be declared to have passed in the
First class with Distinction.

10. GRADING SYSTEM

10.1 Passing Minimum is 50% of the ESE (End Semester


Examination) and also 50% of the maximum of that
paper/course.

12. CONCESSIONS FOR DIFFERENTLY-ABLED STUDENTS

13.MAXIMUM PERIOD FOR COMPLETION OF THE PROGRAMS


TO QUALIFY FOR A DEGREE

13.1.A Student who for whatever reasons is not able to


complete the programs within the normal period
(N) or the Minimum duration prescribed for the
programme, may be allowed two years period

beyond the normal period to clear the backlog to
be qualified for the degree. (Time Span = N + 2

13.2.In exceptional cases like major accidents and child


birth an extension of one year be considered

13.3.Students qualifying during the extended period, shall


not be eligible for RANKING

4.3. Inclusion of the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)


available on SWAYAM, NPTEL and other such portals
approved by the University Authorities.

4.3.1. The Chairperson, Board of Studies (Both autonomous


and non-autonomous colleges) consider the available
MOOCs and choose the courses to be included under
Core, Elective and Soft Skill category and also the
number of credits for such courses based on the
content and duration of course. The credit for such
courses shall be included as part of the Core, Elective
and Soft Skill to award the Degree. The number of
credit will be decide at the University level for such
courses which are relevant to more than one
department such as soft skills and elective courses.

Note: Autonomous Colleges Continue to follow the existing


credits distribution of the above Scheme and have to
flexibility of distribution of credits.

5.REQUIREMENTS FOR PROCEEDING TO SUBSEQUENT
SEMESTERS

5.1. Eligibility: Students shall be eligible to go to subsequent


semester only if they earn sufficient attendance as
prescribed therefor by the Syndicate from time to
time.

5.2. Attendance: All Students must earn 75% and above of


attendance for appearing for the University
Examination. (Theory/Practical)

5.3. Condonation of shortage of attendance: If a Student


fails to earn the minimum attendance (Percentage
stipulated), the Principals shall condone the shortage
of attendance upto a maximum limit of 10% (i.e.
between 65% and above and less than 75%) after
collecting the prescribed fee of Rs.250/-each for
Theory/Practical examination separately, (Theory
Rs.250/- Per semester/Per Student: Practical Rs.250/-
Per semester/Per Student) towards the condonation
of shortage of attendance. Such fees collected and
should be remitted to the University.

5.4.Non-eligibility for condonation of shortage of


attendance: Students who have secured less than 65
% but more than 50 %of attendance are NOT ELIGIBLE
for condonation of shortage of attendance and such
Students will not be permitted to appear for the
regular examination, but will be allowed to proceed to
the next year/next semester of the program and they
may be permitted to take next University examination
by paying the prescribed condonation fee of Rs.250/-
each for Theory/Practical separately. Such fees shall
be remitted to the University. Name of such Students
should be forwarded to the University along with their
attendance details in the prescribed format

mentioning the category (3 copies). Year wise/Branch
wise/Semester wise together with the fees collected
from them, so as to enable them to get permission
from the University and to attend the Theory/Practical
examination subsequently without any difficulty.

5.5.Detained students for want of attendance: Students


who have earned less than 50% of attendance shall be
permitted to proceed to the next semester and to
complete the Program of study. Such Students shall
have to repeat the semester, which they have missed
by re-joining after completion of final semester of the
course, by paying the fee for the break of study as
prescribed by the University from time to time.

5.6. Condonation of shortage of attendance for married


women students:In respect of married women
students undergoing PG programs, the minimum
attendance for condonation (Theory/Practical) shall be
relaxed and prescribed as 55% instead of 65% if they
conceive during their academic career. Medical
certificate from the Doctor (D.G.O) attached to the
Government Hospital and the prescribed fee of
Rs.250/-therefor together with the attendance details
shall be forwarded to the university to consider the
condonation of attendance mentioning the category.

5.7.Zero Percentage(0%) Attendance: The Students, who


have earned 0% of attendance, have to repeat the
program (by rejoining) without proceeding to
succeeding semester and they have to obtain prior
permission from the University immediately to rejoin
the program.

5.8.Transfer of Students and Credits:The strength of the


credits system is that it permits inter Institutional
transfer of students. By providing mobility, it enables

individual students to develop their capabilities fully by
permitting them to move from one Institution to
another in accordance with their aptitude and abilities.

5.8.1.Transfer of Students is permitted from one


Institution to another Institution for the same
program with same nomenclature.
Provided there is a vacancy in the respective
program of Study in the Institution where the
transfer is requested.
Provided the Student should have passed all the
courses in the Institution from where the transfer
is requested.
5.8.2.The marks obtained in the courses will be converted
and grades will be assigned as per the University
norms.
5.8.3. The transfer students are eligible for classification.
5.8.4. The transfer students are not eligible for Ranking,
Prizes and Medals.
5.8.5. Students who want to go to foreign Universities
upto two semesters or Project Work with the prior
approval of the Departmental/College Committee
are allowed to get transfer of credits and marks
which will be converted into Grades as per the
University norms and are eligible to get CGPA and
Classification; they are not eligible for Ranking,
Prizes and Medals.
5.9. Students are exempted from attendance requirements
for online courses of the University and MOOCs.

6.7. PASSING MINIMUM:


6.7.1.There shall be no Passing Minimum for Internal.

6.7.2. A Student who secures not less than 50 percent


marks in the External Written Examination and the
aggregate (i.e. Written Examination Marks and the
Internal Assessment Marks put together) respectively of
each paper shall be declared to have passed the
examination in that subject.

6.7.3. A Student shall be declared to have passed


Project Work and Viva-Voce respectively, if
he/she secures a minimum 50 percent marks in
the Project Work Evaluation and the Viva Voce
each.

6.7.4. A Student failing in any subject will be permitted to appear
for the examinations again on a subsequent occasion
without putting in any additional attendance.
6.7.5. A Student who fails in either Project Work or Viva-
Voce shall be permitted to redo the Project Work for
evaluation and reappear for the Viva-Voce on a
subsequent occasion, if so recommended by the
Examiners.
6.7.6. A Student who successfully completes the Programme
and passes the examinations of all the FOUR Semesters
prescribed as per Scheme of Examinations earning 91
CREDITS shall be declared to have qualified for the
Degree.
6.8.INSTANT EXAMINATION:
Instant Examinations is conducted for the students who
appeared in the final semester examinations of the PG
degree courses. Eligible criteria for appearing in the Instant
Examinations are as follows:

6.8.1. Eligibility: A Student who is having arrear only in one


theory paper in the final semester examination of
the PG Degree program is eligible to appear for the
Instant Examinations.

6.8.2. Non eligibility for one Arrear Paper: A Student who


is having more than one arrear paper in the current
appearance of Fourth Semester for PG Examinations
is not eligible for appearing for the Instant
Examinations.
6.8.3. Non eligibility for Arrear in other semester:Student
having arrear in any other semester is not eligible
and a candidate who is absent in the current
appearance is also not eligible for appearing in the
Instant Examinations and those Students who have
arrear in Practical/Project are not eligible for the
Instant Examinations.

6.8.4. Non eligibility for those completed the
programe:Students who have completed their
Program duration but having arrears are not eligible
to appear for Instant Examinations.

6.9. RETOTALLING, REVALUATION AND PHOTOCOPY OF THE


ANSWER SCRIPT
6.9.1 Retotalling: PG Students not eligible for applying
retotalling of their answer script.
6.9.2 Revaluation: All current batch students who have
appeared for their Semester Examinations are
alone eligible for Revaluation of their answer
scripts;Passed out students are not eligible for
Revaluation.
6.9.3 Photocopy of the answer scripts:Students who have
applied for revaluation can download their answer
scripts from the University Website after fifteen
days from the date of publication of the results.
6.10. The examination and evaluation for MOOCs will be as
per the requirements of the Courses and will be
specified at the beginning of the Semester in which such
courses are offered and will be notified by the University

7. CLASSIFICATION OF SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS


7.1 Students who secured not less than 60 % of aggregate
marks (Internal + External) in the whole examination
shall be declared to have passed the examination in the
First Class. All other successful Students shall be
declared to have passed in Second Class. Candidates
who obtain 75% of the marks in the aggregate (Internal
+ External) shall be deemed to have passed the
examination in First Class with Distinction, provided
they pass all the examinations (theory papers, practical,
project and viva-voce) prescribed for the course in the
First appearance.

under5 are only eligible for Classification.

10. CONCESSIONS FOR DIFFERENTLY-ABLED STUDENTS

10.1.Dyslexia students: For students who are mentally


disabled, having disability and mental retardation,
who are slow learners, who are mentally impaired
having learning disorder and seizure disorder and
students who are spastic and cerebral Palsy, the
following concessions shall be granted, Provided the
request is duly certified by the Medical Board of the
Government Hospital/ General Hospital/ District
headquarters Hospitals.:
a. One-third of the time of paper as extra time in the
examination
b. Leniency in overlooking spelling
c.Amanuensis for all PG programme provided the
request is duly certified by the Medical Board of
the Government Hospital/ General Hospital/
District headquarters Hospitals and they shall be
declared qualified for the degree if they pass the
other examinations prescribed for the degree.

10.2. Visually Challenged Students

a. Exempted from paying examination fees.

b. A scribe shall be arranged by the college and the


scribe be paid as per the college decision.

11.MAXIMUM PERIOD FOR COMPLETION OF THE


PROGRAMS TO QUALIFY FOR A DEGREE

11.1.A Student who for whatever reasons is not able to


complete the programme within the normal period
(N) or the Minimum duration prescribed for the
programme, may be allowed two years period

beyond the normal period to clear the backlog to
be qualified for the degree. (Time Span = N + 2
years for the completion of programme.)

11.2. In exceptional cases like major accidents and child


birth, an extension of one year be considered
beyond maximum span of time (Time Span = N + 2
+1 years for the completion of programme).

11.3.Students qualifying during the extended period, shall


not be eligible for RANKING.

Note:Autonomous Colleges have their freedom to modify


any of the above regulations based on the UGC
guidelines for Autonomous Colleges or guidelines

REGULATIONS

1. ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION

1.1.Candidate who has passed the under-mentioned degree


examinations of this University or an examination of
other institution recognized by this University as
equivalent thereto provided they have undergone the
course under 10+2+3 or 11+1+3 or 11+2+2 pattern or
under the Open University System, shall be eligible for
admission to the M.C.A. Degree Course.
(a) B.C.A/B.E.S/B.Sc. in Computer
Science/Mathematics/Physics/ Statistics / Applied
Sciences OR (b) B.Com / Bachelor of Bank
Management/B.B.A/B.L.M/B.A Corporate Secretary-
ship / B.A. Economics/ any other Bachelor’s Degree in
any discipline with Business Mathematics and Statistics
or Mathematics/Statistics in Main/Allied level OR (c)
B.Sc. Chemistry with Mathematics and Physics as allied

2. DURATION OF THE PROGRAM

2.1. The Course duration shall be three years consisting of six


semesters. In order to be eligible for the award of the
degree the candidate shall successfully complete the
course in a maximum period of five years reckoned from
the date of enrolment for the first semester of the
course.

3.STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAM AND EVALUATION
PATTERN(Autonomous Colleges can modify these
regulations and get it approval in their College Academic
Council)
3.1 The duration of University examination for theory and
practical subjects shall be 3 hours. The maximum mark
for each theory is 100 with 25 for Internal Assessment
(IA) and 75 for University Examination. The distribution
of internal marks for theory papers shall be: Two tests
out of three - 15 marks, Attendance – 5 marks, and
Assignment/Seminar - 5 marks. The maximum mark for
each practical is 100 with 40 for Internal Assessment
and 60 for University Examination.
3.2. Inclusion of the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)
available on SWAYAM, NPTEL and other such portals
approved by the University Authorities.
3.2.1. The Chairperson, Board of Studies (Both autonomous
and non-autonomous colleges) consider the available
MOOCs and choose the courses to be included under
Core, Elective and Soft Skill category and also the
number of credits for such courses based on the
content and duration of course. The credit for such
courses shall be included as part of the Core, Elective
and Soft Skill to award the Degree. The number of
credit will be decide at the University level for such
courses which are relevant to more than one
department such as soft skills and elective courses.

3.3 The distribution of internal marks for practical papers


shall be: Practical tests Two out of three - 30 marks,
Attendance – 5 marks, and Record - 5 marks. Total 40
marks.
3.4For project work the marks assigned shall be as follows:
Internal Two out of three presentations 20 marks
Project report 60 marks
Viva-voce 20 marks
Total 100 marks

3.6 For the conduct of University Examinations in Practical


subjects, the University will appoint one external
examiner one internal examiner who shall normally be
the concerned practical in-charge. The University will
set the questions and distribute to the colleges. The
examiners will conduct the examinations and award the
marks on the same day and forward to the University.
The College Principal/Head of the department will
coordinate and provide the laboratory and other
facilities for conducting the examination.

3.7 Project work shall be carried out individually in an R&D
section of any Industry or University or in the Institute in
which the candidate is studying. The Project
Work/Dissertation report shall be submitted through the
guides/supervisors to the Head of the Department and
then to the University not later than 31st May/31st
December. If he/she fails to submit the Project
Work/Dissertation within the stipulated date for a
particular semester, he/she may be permitted with the
approval of the Head of the Department to submit the
Project Work/Dissertation report during the succeeding
semesters, within the maximum period of FIVE years
from the date of admission to the first semester.
Project/Dissertation evaluation and Viva-Voce shall be
conducted by one external examiner and one internal
examiner who shall normally be the project guide.

3.8. The examination and evaluation for MOOCs will be as per


the requirements of the Courses and will be specified at
the beginning of the Semester in which such courses are
offered and will be notified by the University.

4. PASSING REQUIREMENTS

4.1 For all subjects the passing requirement is as follows: i)


candidate secures not less than 50% of marks in
University examination (U.E.) and not less than 50% in
aggregate of the total maximum marks prescribed in
each theory & practical, and in Project work minimum
50% each in dissertation and Viva-Voce examination and
not less than 50% in aggregate of the total maximum
marks prescribed, shall be declared to have passed in
the respective subject.

4.2. A Student who passes in all subjects and in the project
work earning 135 credits(including soft Skills and
Internship) within the maximum period of five years
reckoned from the date of admission to the course shall
be declared to have qualified for the degree.

4.3. The relative overall performance of the Student shall be


determined by the overall percentage of Marks
obtained in all subjects evaluated as follows:

5. CLASSIFICATION OF SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS


5.1 A Student who qualifies for the Degree and secures
WAM of not less than 75% shall be declared to have
passed the examination in FIRST CLASS WITH
DISTINCTION provided he/she has passed the
examination in every subject he/she has registered as
well as in the project work in the first appearance.

5.2 A student who qualifies for the degree as per the


regulations for passing requirements and secures a
weighted average of not less than 60% shall be
declared to have passed the examination in FIRST
CLASS.

5.3 All other successful Students shall be declared to have


passed in SECOND CLASS.

5.4 Only those Students who have passed all the papers
including practical and project work in the first
appearance shall be considered for the purpose of
RANKING.

5.5 The candidates admitted in the lateral entry system


shall not be considered for Ranking. However, those
candidates shall be considered for classification.

6. PROCEDURE IN THE EVENT OF FAILURE

6.1 If a candidate fails in a particular subject (other than


Project work) he/she may reappear for the University
examination in the subject in subsequent semesters and
obtain passing marks.

6.2 In the event of failure in Project Work, the candidate


shall reregister for Project Work and redo the Project
Work in a subsequent semester and resubmit the
dissertation afresh for evaluation. The internal
assessment marks shall be freshly allotted in this case.

7. ATTENDANCE
A Student who has attendance of less than 75% overall in a
semester shall not be permitted to take the University
examination. However, it shall be open to the Academic
Dean/Principal to grant exemption to a Student if he/she
possess 65% or more attendance but less than 75% after
paying the required condonation fee to the University for
valid reasons and such exemptions should not under any
circumstances be granted for attendance below 65%.
Candidates who have less than 65% and those who have
less than 75% but have not got the exemption as above, has
to repeat the semester from the next academic year.

7.1. Students are exempted from attendance requirements


for online courses of the University and MOOCs.

8. CONCESSIONS FOR DIFFERENTLY-ABLED STUDENTS

8.1.Dyslexia students: For students who are mentally


disabled, learning disability and mental retardation,
who are slow learners, who are mentally impaired
having learning disorder and seizure disorder and
students who are spastic and cerebral Palsy, the
following concessions shall be granted, Provided the
request is duly certified by the Medical Board of the
Government Hospital/ General Hospital/ District
headquarters Hospitals.:
a. One-third of the time of paper as extra time in the
examination
b. Leniency in overlooking spelling
c. Amanuensis for all PG programme provided the
request is duly certified by the Medical Board of
the Government Hospital/ General Hospital/
District headquarters Hospitals and they shall be
declared qualified for the degree if they pass the
other examinations prescribed for the degree.

8.2. Visually Challenged Students


a. Exempted from paying examination fees.
b. A scribe shall be arranged by the college and the
scribe be paid as per college decision.

9. MARKS AND GRADING SYSTEM


9.1. Passing Minimum is 50% of the ESE and also 50% of the
maximum of that Paper/course.

9.2. Minimum Credits to be earned: Best 135 Credits:(Part A


(120 Credits): Core, Electives and Extra Disciplinary and
part B (15 Credits): Soft skills and Internship).

GPA (Grade Point Average) for a Semester: = ∑iCiGi ÷ ∑iCi


That is, GPA is the sum of the multiplication of grade points
by the credits of the coursesdivided by thesum of the credits
of the courses in a semester.

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) for the entire


programme:=∑n∑iCniGni ÷∑n∑iCni
That is, CGPA is the sum of the multiplication of grade points by
the credits of the entire programme divided by thesum of the
credits of the courses of the entire programme

n = Semester in which such courses were credited.

*Students who have passed in the first appearance and within


the prescribed semester of the PG Programme (Core,

10. PROVISION FOR LATERAL ADMISSION
10.1. Students with PGDCS of this University or any other
University as equivalent thereto, provided he/she
satisfies the eligibility condition as above, shall be
admitted to the Second year of the M.C.A. Degree
Program.
10.2. Students who have completed Bachelor’s Degree of
Minimum 3 years duration in B.C.A./B.Sc. (Computer
Science) with mathematics as a course at 10+2 level
or at graduate level shall alone be eligible for
admission to Second year M.C.A. Program (Lateral
Entry) up to a maximum of 20% of sanctioned intake
which will be supernumerary of the approved
intake. The sanction of supernumerary seats shall be
considered based on the additional facility available
in the respective college.

11. PATTERN OF QUESTION PAPER
11.1 For theory

Time 3 hours Max Marks 75

Part - A: (50 words) 10 simple questions 10 x 1 = 10 Marks


At least two questions from each unit.
Part – B: (200 words) 5 Out of 7 questions 5 x 5 = 25 Marks
At least one question from each unit.
Part –C: (500 words) 4 Out of 6 questions 4 x 10 = 40 Marks
At least one question from each unit.
11.2 For practical
Time: 3 Hours Max: 60 Marks.
One compulsory problem (may contain subdivisions) to be
solved within 3 hours

12. INSTANT EXAMINATION

No instant examination for M.C.A. Program

13. RETOTALLING, REVALUATION AND PHOTOCOPY OF THE


ANSWER SCRIPT

13.1 Re-totalling: M.C.A.Students not eligible for applying


retotalling of their answer script.

13.2 Revaluation: All current batch Students who have


appeared for their Semester Examinations are
alone eligible for Revaluation of their answer
scripts. Passed out candidates are not eligible for
Revaluation.

13.3 Photocopy of the answer scripts:Students who have


applied for revaluation can download their answer
scripts from the University Website after fifteen
days from the date of publication of the results.

14.MAXIMUM PERIOD FOR COMPLETION OF THE
PROGRAMS TO QUALIFY FOR A DEGREE

14.1.A Student who for whatever reasons is not able to


complete the programme within the normal period
(N) or the Minimum duration prescribed for the
programme, may be allowed two years period
beyond the normal period to clear the backlog to
be qualified for the degree. (Time Span = N + 2
years for the completion of programme.)

14.2. In exceptional cases like major accidents and child


birth an extension of one year be considered
beyond maximum span of time(Time Span=N + 2 +1
years for the completion of programme).

14.3. Students qualifying during the extended period,


shall not be eligible for RANKING.

Note: Autonomous Colleges have their freedom to


modify any of the above regulations based on the
UGC guidelines for Autonomous Colleges or
guidelines of the Tamil Nadu State Council for
Higher Education with the approval of the
University.
