Safe Bearing Capacity on Cohesionless Soil

The document provides calculations for determining the safe bearing capacity and settlement of a foundation on cohesionless soil. It outlines assumptions about the foundation geometry and soil properties. It then calculates the ultimate bearing capacity according to a shear failure criteria, determining a safe bearing capacity of 23.21 T/m2. It also calculates the settlement of a 5m x 5m foundation under a stress of 15 T/m2, determining a total settlement of 11.688mm which is less than the allowable value.

Calculations For Safe Bearing Capacity on Cohesionless Soil

Calculations are based on following assumptions:

 Foundation width = 1m for Bearing capacity calculations
 Foundation width = 5m for settlement calculations
 Foundation depth = 1m below the ground surface existing at the time of
Investigation
 Assumed ground water table at foundation level
 Unit weight of subsoil above foundation depth =1.8 T /m3
Following subsoil profile is considered for design calculations

Depth (m) Type of subsoil o E (T/m2)

0.0 to 3.0 Silty sand 32 1500

A) Shear Failure Criteria (IS 6403)

Ultimate bearing capacity = qu = C N C S C + q (Nq – 1) Sqdq+ 0.5  B N S d

Where, C = 0 T / m2 and  = 320,
Nq = 24.36, N = 32.652, Sq = 1.2, S = 0.8
q = Overburden stress at the bottom of the foundation
= 1 X 1.7 = 1.7 T/ m2
Dq = 1+0.1sqrt (Nf) Df/B = 1+0.1x sqrt (tan2 (45+32/2)) x 1= 1.18
 = Unit weight of subsoil above water table (moist) = 1.7 T/m3
B = Width of foundation = 1m
qu = C N C S C + q (Nq – 1) Sqdq + 0.5  B N S d
= 1.7 x (24.36-1) x 1.2 x 1.18 + 0.5 x 1.7 x 1 x 32.652 x 0.8 x 0.5x 1.18
= 56.23 + 13.09 = 69.32 T / m2
Factor safety = 3, qsafe = 69.32 / 3.0 = 23.21T/m 2
B) Settlement of Strip or spread foundation on Cohesionless soils
Settlement = 2.303 Ht / C log10 {(Po + P) / Po}
Where C = 1.50 Ckd / Po
Ckd= Cone Resistance kg/cm2
Ht = Thickness of compressible layer
Po = In situ overburden stress
P = Incremental stress due to foundation = 4 x p x Iz
p = Stress intensity
Iz = Influence zone depends on L/z or B/z
L = Length of loaded area
B = Width of loaded area

A typical foundation of size 5.0 x 5.0m is placed at 1m depth with stress intensity of 15T /
m2 is considered for settlement calculation.

Settlement = 2.303 Ht / C log10 {(Po + P) / Po}
