Reducing pollution in
the University of Mosul
INTRODUCTION
No part of our world can be safe from pollution thus it was daily problem in our life, so we must give our
help by putting thought or solve some parts of problems. because pollution may be having a live in
anywhere, when its growth without treatment. (R6)
This report discusses what are the main types of the pollutants in University of Mosul range, also
reducing their effect on population. As we shall go throw the efficient and applicable ways to deal with.
TYPSE OF POLLUTION
Broadly, can be classified to natural and man-made pollution. Since there are many kinds of man-made
pollution such as air, water, food, noise and solid waste pollution.
• Air pollution: it means all kind of harmful material for instance (sulfate dioxide, carbon dioxide,
carbon monoxide, dust, burning fossil fuel) mixed with essential air particles.
• Solid waste pollution: It is a term for man-made waste, basically consisting of plastic, building
debris, metal of old machines.
• Water pollution. Simply defined when the water has been affected by any kind of harmful
material that makes lacking of oxygen due to the process of self-refining while oxidizing it.
• Noise pollution: related to the any extreme sounds that have bad effect on the human health.
• Visual pollution: Is the absence of aesthetic touch and lack of cleanliness, order and
consistency’s values
SOURCES
According to existing pollutant:
• Air pollution it has many sources such as heavy traffic, dust storm, human activities from
areas inside and around the University.
• wastewater mixed with ground water.
• Construction sites particularly the restoration posts the damage of conflict, it has an impact on
the calmness by the sounds of tracks and Hydraulic Excavators. Another thing is the remains (debris),
huge amounts of concrete is existed. (R1)
• Disposable things which are single used. Significant cause of solid wastes in addition to the
previous source (Construction sites).
• Noise this type pollution very wide and no one can stop, it come at one time immediately and
disappear at once the cause gone, big machines stop or got away so it takes small time but it impacts at
health of human convenience.
SUGGESSION SOLUTIONS
• Redesigning of gardens and planting types of shrubs (dense, woody) and trees that give or work
as a fence. it stabilizes the soil and face dust storm. Increase ground and air humidity (R5).
• Using A mulch is a layer of material (it could be bark chips) applied to the surface of soil. For
keeping soil moisture and stabilization, also to improve the visual appeal of the area.
• Paving the sidewalk with sustainable material such as stone tile.
• Forbidding old cars to inter the campus. That has bad effect on air and noise pollution due to the
incomplete fuel burning.
• Using of isolating materials such (Ponza block).
• Introducing a wastewater treatment station to treat the wastewater and link it by the city’s
sewer network.
• More using of fountains to increase the magnitude of air moisture in area surrounded. (see fig 2)
• Using special skirts to avoid noise.
• Using splitting method to make it easier to separate kinds of solid waste.
• Using Foam bitumen (mixture of Hot bitumen and Cold water as shown in fig.1) in the main roads
a. Resist to flooding, support longer working time, Strong and flexible, minimize shrinkage cracking. (R3)
Reduce heating reflection and soak up the sounds of moving truck.
• Using sprays, sprinkles or fountains between buildings especially dry seasons.

BILL OF QUANTITY
• As a guiding value, approximately 200 liters per a year for a tree with trunk diameter of 10 cm,
or 1000 liters for a tree with trunk diameter more than 25 cm. (R2)
No. Type of treatment /name Unit/quantity notes
1 Tree belt (Cupressus Sp.) 1 Tree/1.5m Guidline FAO
2 shrubs (main road) (Callistemon 1 Tree/4m Guidline FAO

3 Climber plants to cover the wall of Every building College of agriculture
building (Jasminum grandiflorum)
4 Foamed asphalt m.l For main roads and parking
5 fountain lump As shown in Uni. Plan

Conclusion
In this report we presented the basic concept of reduction of pollution which is occurred in
University of Mosul. The university environment should be relevance for study and healthy
for the society. Since environmental rules should be imposed. And increasing environmental
aware due to its impaction on living creatures. As graduate demands we encourage every
student to plant one tree.
we depend on online article references and we sketch and sign the treated area from Google
maps.
