Quick Guide to Writing an

Argumentative Essay

Paragraph 1: Introduction

 A hook to grab your reader’s attention. (1-2 sentences)


 General background information on your topic or why it is important. (2-3 sentences)
 State your claim on your topic. (1 sentence)
Paragraph 2: Reason #1

 State your first reason for your claim.


 Provide text evidence to support your reason.
 Explain how your evidence supports your reason.
 Relate your reason/information back to your claim.
Paragraph 3: Reason #2

 State your second reason for your claim.


 Provide text evidence to support your reason.
 Explain how your evidence supports your reason.
 Relate your reason/information back to your claim.
Paragraph 4: Counterclaim and Rebuttal

 State a counterclaim- an argument for the other side. *Remember to use a sentence
starter.
 State a rebuttal- explain why the counterclaim is wrong. *Remember to use a sentence
starter.
 Provide text evidence.
 Explain how your text evidence supports your rebuttal.
 Relate back to your claim.
Paragraph 5: Conclusion

 Summarize main points


 Add any new conclusions you can about the topic.
o Give the reader something to think about…
o Show how this is significant in your life or the reader’s life.
 Restate your claim.
Directions: Place a check mark on the line once you have written the information in your essay.
