CHAPTER 7
CONCLUSION AND SCOPE FOR FUTURE WORK
7.1 CONCLUSION
This chapter concludes the thesis and also discusses the future work
that can be carried out.
The research work has summarized about adaptive fuzzy logic
control for maximum power point tracking of photovoltaic system. Maximum
PV power achieved in AFLC is higher compared to the conventional FLC
method. The FPGA implementation of the control algorithm is applied to a
boost converter. The results reveal that the adaptive FLC can quickly track
change of MPP under varying light intensity. Therefore, the AFLC MPPT
controller is a effective one of maximum power tracking for PV system.
Moreover, a SiC MOSFET based boost converter for PV
application has been developed. The characteristics of SiC MOSFET are
analyzed and its performance is compared with the classical Si MOSFET. It is
observed that the proposed SiC converter gives a reduced output voltage and
input current ripple. Moreover, with SiC, the losses are reduced and
efficiency is improved compared to Si boost converter. Therefore, the SiC
boost converter is a better choice for photovoltaic system. The effective
equivalent circuit for lead-acid batteries was implemented. The battery
charging and discharging characteristics is validated experimentally. With

solar charging, the depth of discharge level of the battery is maintained and
the operating temperature is also constant.
The performance analysis of active neutral point clamped
multilevel inverter has been investigated. Switching loss , switching stress
across the device and thermal performance have been analyzed for the
ANPCMLI. The control scheme for the fault tolerant ability of ANCMLI is
suggested to keep neutral-point voltage balanced and generate a stable and
continuous output under single device fault for both open circuit and short-
circuit cases. By employing ANPCMLI ,the spectral quality of the output
voltage are reduced compared to the conventional voltage source inverter. The
simulation results are verified experimentally. A prototype of ANPCMLI fed
BLDC drive alongwith FPGA control is built and simulation results are
verified experimentally. It is observed from the results, that the ANPCMLI
fed BLDC motor has resulted in significant reduction of torque ripple, total
harmonic distortion and switching stress. The MLI with BLDC drive system
is developed for electric vehicle and the dynamic performance of BLDC drive
are also investigated.
The dynamic parameters of electric vehicle such as acceleration
and deceleration, starting and running torque and vehicle speed is
investigated for the BLDC drive. The vehicle has achieved a maximum speed
of 40Kmph in forward and reverse direction. The use of BLDC drive results
in the reduction of torque ripple, weight of the differential gear and stator
current fluctuation compared to the conventional DC drive. Hence, the
developed solar powered electric vehicle is highly fuel efficient and it is a
appropriate solution for transportation.

7.2 SCOPE FOR FUTURE WORK
The research work focused on the development of solar car with
BLDC motor employing sensored control technique. The performance of
vehicle can be further improved by implementing a sensorless technique for
BLDC drive. In this method, the zero crossing points of back EMF are
detected and a phase lag of 30 degree is provided to get six discrete rotor
position signals in each electrical cycle. The performance and reliability of
BLDC drive will be improved. Further the same methodology can be applied
to design and build a solar race car. The body and chassis of the car can be
manufactured from fiber glass and aerospace aluminum material. Semi-
flexible solar panels can be installed. Particularly, with X-Series solar panels,
efficiency of 44% can be obtained. The lead acid battery can be replaced by
Li-Ion which reduces the dimension of chassis of the vehicle. With increasing
the Ampere hour of battery backup time can be increased. The vehicle speed
(80kmph) can be increased for a higher rating of BLDC motor (5kW).Further,
lead acid battery can be replaced by Li-ion and the mileage of the vehicle can
be further improved.
