4-Chord Song Assignment

Use the common 4-chord progression or the Pachelbel progression to create a 4-chord song
that could join the ranks of so many other classics. It should be at least 32 measures long and
have rhythmic interest in both the melody and the chords. You are NOT allowed to use C
major!!!

4-Chord Progression is as follows:

||: I V vi IV :|| (I)


Pachelbel Progression is as follows:

||: I V vi I6 IV I IV V :|| (I)

1) Create a rhythmic pattern for the chords


a. Each chord must last for at least 2 beats (various rhythm combinations, examples
below)

b. Think about trying broken chords (see below)


2) Compose a melody that works
a. Main beats should be a chord note
b. Off beats should have stepwise movement to connect chord notes
c. Consider using broken chords for the melody
d. Should be rhythmically different than the chord accompaniment

e. Consider a Verse & Refrain style of melody


f. Write lyrics (if desired).
